    I found the comparative meter readings helpful that were reported to you such as 2 S-units lower with more hiss. Those were good practical bits of info. Plus, we could all hear the white noise increasing with the shorter antennas.

    Interesting comparison - going out so we don’t have to! 😆
    I do believe they tend to fold over in strong wind conditions though, so do have limitations on open ground, weather dependant.

    Another excellent video. I'm really glad you've covered these antennas. I have a Abbree branded BNC 13 inch, and it seems to perform well. The 42.5 inch ones are largely pointless, and it seems they don't perform any better than a Nagoya NA-771. The main issue with the longer ones is the risk of snapping the antenna connector, or breaking a BNC adapter off in the connector.

    Hi Lewis great video mate about your 3 different antennas and also the 3 different power levels as well I've got the ABBREE antenna it's about 1 meter in length and I've used indoors and I have had some really good results with it on my Baofeng UV-9RPLUS radio and people gave me 5-9 reports and 5-7 for the long distance stations my radio does 8 Watts high power medium power is 4 Watts and low power is 1 watt but it works extremely well I haven't tested it outdoors mobile just yet but I'll get round to doing it soon mate. I can add some useful info from my experience. UV-5R HT in normal conditions and mixed path (relatively flat surface, 65% open field, 30% forest, 5% buildings, no additional elevation) with Nagoya 771 antenna can shoot up to 9-10 km. The short kit antenna works up to 6-7 km. Surprisingly, VHF is worse than UHF.

    I got a cheepy Bingfu (one of many Baofeng offshoots I suspect) 42 inch tactical for a UV81c (Baofend on 476/7 -Australasian UHF CB) SWR was over 7.8 - I didn't even bother range testing it as didn't want to cook the handset, but out of curiosity tried taking the top section off leaving the wound 4 inch stubby that connects to the radio & got a SWR of 1.... truly bizarre but still seemed a better call to get my money back while I could hence its been returned. #ham hesitant in the antipodes.

    I have a hard time understanding your graph, mate. I see distance, antenna length and the power of your radio, but the {5/X} I assume must mean the power-received signal. I'm fairly new to ham radio, but if I interpret your graph correctly, it would seem to indicate that power output in watts does make a significant difference in field distance. The longer tactical antenna is a bit too long for practical purposes, but have you compared the 18.5-inch tactical antenna with a 15-inch Nagoya NA-771 or NA-24J antenna?

  • @357Muzzleblast
    @357Muzzleblast Рік тому

    BTW, if you were going to buy a new UV-82, would you get an 8W model or a 5W model. I have both and the 5W model is a bit more powerful than 5Ws on UHF, which is the opposite of what I get on many of my other radios. Most of my other radios do better on VHF than UHF. One of my 10W radios measures close to 14W on 146.355 and 13W on my other VHF frequencies, and 11W on all of my UHF frequencies. My 8W UV-82 isn't significantly more powerful than the 5W model. But I don't consider a watt or two much of a change.

In theory, it might receive enough signal to open the squelch and be readable, but if it can't clearly detect the entire squelch code it might fail to unmute. Maybe a controlled test would be interesting! Thanks.

    Lol, all this ‘length’ measuring is anecdotal and meaningless. A more realistic and scientific approach would be to set up a 0 dB gain dipole antenna in an open field attached to a calibrated receiver with rssi, spectrum analyzer or field strength meter. Keep both receive antenna and test antenna(s) in the same polarization, vertical in this case, about a meter or two off the ground and transmit from multiple wavelengths away. A few hundred feet or more should do. Reduce power till you get a reading mid scale then swap out antennas as you please, noting gains or losses as you go (which are always measured and stated in microvolts per meter or dB’s.) keep your body out of the way or at the very least hold still in a repeatable fashion, don’t twist and turn and wave your arms about. This is the definitive way of measuring and comparing antenna gains/losses. Anything else is anecdotal, subjective and speculative. Keep the science alive in amateur radio, you don’t want to become a know-nothing appliance operator like those cb radio hacks.
