It is hard to beat the safety and convenience of the Olfa ergonomic design cutter...it closes automatically and you do not need to push buttons to open, close or lock. I would not want a cutter that can be left open by mistake.

No, I don't think you have to. You just push the blade cover against your table/mat, and it will close.
