- Comedian Jerrod Carmichael recently came out as gay in his Netflix special, "Rothaniel," and shared his gratitude to Ellen for coming out on her sitcom 25 years ago. He explained that his mom welcomed Ellen in their home, a feat he never thought was possible for his more conservative parents, and even joked that Ellen is a "gay, white Desmond Tutu" for spreading so much love. Jerrod also talked about how he was terrified to publicly say he's gay, and how his family feels now after his truth coming out.

It’s sad to hear his response to Ellen’s question about how did his parents take it, be that he had to create distance, and looked up saying it’s okay. I remember him coming out a few years ago saying he was bisexual in an interview. So I guess his family didn’t see that.
