  • Heres a short video doing a little explaing on teardown of rear differential and process to prepare it for 6 to 1 high speed gears .Unfortunantly I have a early 98 with the larger style bearing and ordered wrong gears .Some came with the small bearing like found on 98 and later so its best to take apart first before ordering gears for that year.When I get new gears ill do another short video explaining reassembly. . I didnt mention that I have already cleaned original gasket off and I will clean inside with solevent to make sure I get any debris that might have got in case from cleaning sealing surface .You can take fill plugs and drain plug out to direct solevent and the debris out of case through fill or drain hole or carefully tip the case. I was careful and used a rag and draping over gears and inside case when cleaning the gasket with a small air sander with roloc discs but still managed to get a little debris in case .Just be careful. ..And also to split cases Ive got an old trick ive used on motorcycle engine cases and transmisions for years . Its a real sharp old stainless steel butcher knife that I lay sharp edge down long ways across the groove of seam and gently tap the top edge of blade with a small hammer and just work and walk it real slow tapping around different places of the seam all the way around case slowly breaking it lose Dont get in a hurry with a screwdriver and marr the sealing surface. It will never seal good and it will leak and you could crack the case . . On axles I leave them in tubes and just pull the tube with axle and brakes intact no need to pull axles out of tubes unless you are replacing the outer bearing on tube NEXT PAY ATTENTION THIS IS CRITICAL on the passenger side case half the shifter shaft hole that it slides into on case has a spring and ball bearing that is retained by a bolt in side of case that points down just below govenor shaft remove the bolt spring and ball bearing before you split cases or ball bearing will fall out into the drivers side case with gears .So make sure and take that out .Also when you go to reassemble the cases if you forget to remove the bolt spring and ball bearing the spring will still be in there and protruding into where shaft sits it wont go all the way back together cause the spring will be blocking the shifter shaft from seating in hole and the ball bearing will be playing pinball on the gears Remove before splitting case. . .This is CRITICAL and you could damage your transaxle beyond repair.
