This brings back lots of wartime memories, I went to Church Drive school, Port Sunlight, right through the war, spent lots of time in the air raid shelter, (the "caves" under the school), but never took a gas mask to school every day. I had a gas mask, somewhere, certainly never used it.I vividly recall going to collect a school friend, on the way to school, and the house wasn't there any more! Mac- Fisheries got bombed, and they took over the gym, next to the swimming pool.

The Germans did less damage to England than we did post-war. New building from the 1940s swallowed swathes of farmland in Wirral for housing, much jerry built. But at least some of the high rises are being demolished now.
So many old buildings were destroyed when they could have been restored, reused. The English ethos from the 40s on has been on destruction - pull it down if you can get away with it. Even now in Gayton they demolished the Vic to build ugly townhouses for yuppies. A tragedy.
