    This video was awesome! You explained everything in such a simple way, even the confusing stuff makes sense now. The comparisons were super helpful too! Can't wait to see what you review next!

    That’s a very interesting topic. I personally find LOG mode and HDR mode on my GoPro 12 are not useable. I just prefer to color grade the desaturated image. But I’m very interested in HDR on GoPro 13

      I feel the exact same way. I’m working on a new video testing out HLG HDR on the 13, so we’ll see if it’s more useable than previous generations

    You did understand something wrong, the Hero 12 does have HDR but its fake HDR because the color space is just rec.709. The Hero 13 has HLG HDR which is real HDR with rec.2100 color space. The good thing about it is that HLG is more or less the standard for HDR the newer iPhones and iPads can play these footage in 10bit HDR without post process. If HDR is not available you will only get the SDR Video on the screen, thats the benefit of HLG, it simply HDR on HDR devices but on non HDR devices its SDR. But the Fake Hero12 HDR is even on HDR screens not real HDR its just SDR. There is a way to get nearly the same result with GP-Log on the Hero 12 but not without a lot of post processing, its possible since the color gamut in GP-Log got an update to get over rec.709 (but still not rec.2100). Just the Hero 13 does have proper rec.2100/BT.2100 color space which is necessary for HLG (real) HDR.

      GPLog is Rec 709 with a 10bit color space just like the standard 10bit output for the GP11 and GP12. In order to see the 10bit color you have the change the color space to one that supports 10bit color output like Rec 2020 or the newer Rec 2100.
      GPLog is just a much less processed flatter color profile, so you have more data available to do your own color matching/grading.

      @@Teampegleg Thats actually not true, since an update i dont know which one the GP-Log profile got an update to get a wider color gamut then it was on the release, the hero 11 can also do that but not without gopro labs and the setting WIDE=1 (enables wider color gamut than rec.709) and LOGB=400 (flattens the gama curve).

      @@AirKhanFPV On release of the GP12 the GP Log was broken, it had something like -4 EV so everything came out underexposed and it didn't have the WIDE flag. They fixed it like a month later. But the video files are still Rec 709 but with 10bit color. Which is how the GP11 and GP12 outputted all 10bit color videos be it LOG or not.
      Rec 709 is still an 8bit output, so you need to switch your color space to actually see the 10bit colors. Though you can still use the 10bit color in Rec 709, as you have more room for color correction before you get blown out highlights or muddy shadows.
      The GP13, reportedly as I'm waiting for sample videos before I purchase, is the first GoPro to output in anything but Rec 709.

      @@Teampegleg quote gopro labs:
      WIDE=1 This offers a color gamut like setting white balance to Native (wider gamut), while enabling auto whitebalance, or user controlled whitebalance. With WIDE off (0 - the default), the camera saturates color to the Rec709 gamut (basically sRGB), so some extreme real-world color saturations are clipped by the gamut. With WIDE=1, the gamut is sensor native, not Rec709, not Rec2020, just what the sensor sees.

      @@AirKhanFPV It is still a Rec709 file, with an 8bit output.

    You should really have used the term SDR as well and explained colour space and transform, in respect to the differences between SDR and HDR and how HLG fits between them. You could have done with doing some research into the people who developed HLG and why, it's actually been around for a long time.

    • @X-Tech24
      @X-Tech24  2 місяці тому

      I did do research about who developed it and why. It didn’t seem particularly relevant in this case, people aren’t broadcasting live with a GoPro. Tried to keep this as simple as possible considering most GoPro users just want to know how this applies to GoPro use

    • @TheGameThing
      @TheGameThing 2 місяці тому

      @@X-Tech24 The history of HLG is totally relevant to GoPro use just as it is with any camera by that standard's main proponent, Sony, or any camera manufacturer that uses it. As there's no difference between transmission and local playback, the standard was created for TV screens, not how it was delivered. Your lack of discussion about the differences between the colour space and gamma responses between SDR and HDR and your lack of the use of SDR to describe something "that doesn't support HDR". Obviously shows that you don't really understand what HLG truly is. Your title is very misleading as you've not really explained anything about HLG and your understanding about HDR is also lacking. Maybe there's a good why you've not seen many UA-camrs talk about it or you've not had much response in forums with questions about it. As for trying to keep it simple. There's no dumbing down or shortcuts to explaining anything that is inherently not simple.

      @@X-Tech24 I've done many videos about GoPro's bogus feature claims and I've also made enough videos about HDR, including editing it. So tyring to defelect the way you just did, was just a bad excuse for you to not answer or expalin anything properly. You are a good example of many of the other UA-cam channels out there who simply do not understand enough about what they are talking about and using clickbait titles. Seriously, there's nothing SECRET about anything to do with any GoPro setting and as I alreday said, you never explained HLG or HDR properly. You only talked about your understabding of both, which is limited at best.

    How do you get the HDR HLG videos to show as HDR on youtube? Ive done like 12 exports of a test video in premiere and am pretty sure the files are proper HDR files but youtube does not show HDR.

    • @X-Tech24
      @X-Tech24  2 місяці тому +1

      I haven’t tested it myself, but from what I’ve read, UA-cam automatically supports HLG HDR. As long as the video is being played on an HDR screen, it should work automatically

    • @Teampegleg
      @Teampegleg 2 місяці тому

      You need a software that can export in in Rec2020 HDR format. If you do that, it takes additional processing time (a couple of hours per minute of 4K60 footage) and it will show up as HDR in resolution menu.
      The latest few videos on my channel are GP11 footage exported as HDR with 10bit color. But it will work the same way with the GP13.

      @@Teampegleg it turned out the next morning that several of my export samples were suddenly showing hdr.. must hust take a while for youtube to process. My rtx 3080 renders 4k30fps at 2 minutes per 1 minute of video in both premiere and resolve studio .. hopefully I can get out fishing soon to do a real test and see if it is usable.
