These comments man... fuck. Speaking as someone who does love Kenneth Clark's original series. I understand why this is being done, it was an exceptionally detailed look at western civilization and i would still reccomend to anyone as an introduction to art history. But the point is that we have that detailed perspective already, i dont see what we'd gain by going over the same ground again. I think they're doing something admirable by comparing and exploring different perspectives on art across cultures. Whether or not you agree with the exploration of colonialism in this show is beside the point. It is a part of our history and every view on it, even ones you don't agree with, deserve looking in to. We can't really pretend that the original didn't have any ideology driving it, as the obvious western bias shows. But its themes transcend ideology, and if those same themes are present here. All the better for it.
Curious thing about history, it ages very quickly. We know massively more now than we did fifty years ago. Clark's series is good and memorable, but it has aged. I am cautiously optimistic, but the proof will be in the telling. There are several other Grand Documentaries of the period I would like to see a 2.0 version of, cautiously hopeful for those as well.
@@pathocrat Although he was a lifelong Labour voter, he hated Marxism in the art world and thought that the COE was too liberal. Yesterday's liberals are today's conservatives.
yes , it is way better than the new version. The depth of knowledge on Kenneth Clark far surpass any of today's. Well worth watching , here is the link in you tube: ua-cam.com/video/TDm4Sl6CdYU/v-deo.html
A bit of reading!! Will have a look and see what I think . At present I think that if the BBC has faults they are nothing compared to other media outlets.
I just don't understand what people who say Pollock's and Maruyama Okyo's painting are garbage doing here. Looking for fun facts to seem smart when talking to girls?
Calling the programme 'Civilisations' (plural) rather than 'Civilization' shows precisely why this series will be forgettable. Clarke was dealing with the weighty philosophical topic of what is civilisation and is it better than barbarism. These low-flying academic birds doing this latest series seem to be telling us ' Oh, we all know what civilisation is. Let's go take a tour of the world's art museum!'
I was looking at the Civilization book and at one point, Clarke explains that something isn't civilization or doesn't rise to his definition of civilization. I think he was contrasting civilizations with barbarians who explore, and travel and raid, but who don't build. We all have culture, but civilization?
First episode was pretty good. Engaging with lots of information, and well-paced. Too many documentaries just rehash what I learned at school and drag it out to an hour with stock footage.
So they mention Nigeria once, after praising European art, and then after saying Nigeria they go back to saying "the beautiful European landscape" and all y'all thought was: "Anti-Whiteness, how *dare* they talk about other cultures in *my* predominantly white country?" Get over yourselves. Other people exist. And the one statement of: "Only a woman could do this painting because it's a personal self portrait." Gets y'all into a frenzy and complaining about how we need a hierarchy. Stop jumping the gun and worrying if white male dominance will go out of style. It's petty and whiny. Y'all aren't. Your fine. How many times do we need to learn about Greece and Rome?
I hope it s not going to be one of those versions of history that is a curious mix of political correctness AND eurocentric hindsight so beloved of the literatis/liberatis...
Afraid of the harsh realities of free speech are we? The beeb has been hijacked by reds eons ago. Fortunately, that shall never be the case for the interwebs.
I have no idea who will read this. Lol! I saw this on Netflix. Season 1 episode 1 at 27 minutes...those set of golden rings are official stamps for seals. Take a better thorough look. Its not just art. I get it. But they have purpose. Lol
AWResistance are you calling Mary beard leftist on the basis of anything else then correctly pointing out that there could very Well have been black roman legionaries?
Goose Hamsterson, Beard is a feminist; feminism is predicated on the assumption that 'equality' is an ideal state of being. If feminism is equality, And equality is a left-wing ideal Then Mary Beard (who is a feminist) is a Leftist.
Schama is a Zionist. An ethno-nationalist for Israel, apparently, but an advocate of open borders for Britain. You're not really a conservative if you aren't interested in preserving the British character of Britain.
After watching this video, I think this series is more like a look at civilizations from the western point of view. Isn’t it better to choose hosts from different cultures backgrounds? Don’t know what these hosts will make up for the arts and histories of Asian and African countries. Nevertheless, still looking forward to this series.
Oh God. Mary Beard? The British taxpayer is forced to pay for this neomarxist crackpottery? Ill stick with Clark and ensure my students watch it again and again.
Yeah, don't know what that was 05:18, but it something so abstract no-one can even describe what it is or represent. As you probably can see from that comment, I hate modern art. Art to me, is something visceral and emotional that hit me deep, and not some lines a 10 year old could have drawn. Art is the sacrifice of the artist.
Those lines can be visceral and emotional too to some people and maybe the work hits them deep. Therefore, it can be considered as art. I can’t imagine that all paintings of great renaissance or baroque painters hit you on an emotional level, still you only question modern art. @bill
All art is subjective and of its time - that's what makes it art. Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. But I see your point when compared with the broad range of art depicted. Looking forward to seeing this.
By 'left-wing' i mean being in favour of egalitarianism, i.e: viewing equality as preferable to heirarchy. The problem is that the show will view peoples and cultures who were most successful as either less advanced than ourselves or evil simply because they contradict the religion of equality. Basically, the ideal civilisation will be one based upon egalitarianism and anything that doesn't fit this mould will be judged as either backwards or evil, despite the evidence proving otherwise.
AWResistance please explain to me how a male dominated hierarchy is the ideal civilisation. Maybe your ideal civilisation. Yeah fuck those communists at the BBC for wanting to y'know, not discriminate against people. Go back to watching blackpigeonspeaks
Why are the titles up to 1,10 mins so slow pompous and pretentious ? Why is this series so inferior to the series by Kenneth Clark and Michael Wood ? Has the BBC forgotten now to make quality films ? At least it is not called Simon Schamss Civilisation,,,or has Mary Beard copyrighted every abstract noun in the English language? And could someone tie Schamas hands behind his back and tell him he is not French
If you're referring to my comment of the "painting", I assure you that any person can do that. If that's how easy it is to paint, I would devote my life as an artist and become rich. You don't need to be a professional critic to know it's crap.
Rachel Easton yea, the one with the lines on it. Like, I know the art world can be up its own ass but from an aesthetic point of view, why does it matter how complex something is or how seemingly difficult it is to paint? Its possible for simple things to be enjoyable, no?
Phat Strats as in some supposedly smart, left leaning "intellectuals" be telling us all that a mud hut village in the ass end of nowhere did the same or more for "civilization" than the western or asian cultures ever did because its the current year and we are all equality loving commies and history is nothing but a construct created by the white man to keep a brother down.
You haven't even seen the show yet. It's not even out but your right-wing nutters call it "communism" and "destroying white Culture". You lot are actually so paranoid and it makes you dense as hell. Keep watching Fox news...
Phat Strats I'm british, we dont get fox news over here... and it doesnt need to be out yet for me to look at this trailer and judge it how i wish because i have independent thought and reasoning skills, something the Neo Marxists sheep such as yourself do not posses.
These comments man... fuck.

James Lancaster True enough... but these presenters are 3 leftists with agendas. Not a balanced spectrum at all.
And you assume because Clark didn't have a nose ring or something that he was a conservative? You might want to verify that.
The Alienated TV
Never at any point did i call him a conservative.

Looking forward to this. The original series is one of my favourites. I expect this to be quite different but it looks majestic!
A lot of negative comment and they haven't seem it yet. Looking forward to a treat from the wonderful BBC.
What is the agenda? Especially in the programme civilisations?
spurn point here's a bit of reading for you en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_the_BBC
A bit of reading!! Will have a look and see what I think . At present I think that if the BBC has faults they are nothing compared to other media outlets.

Will It be possible to watch the episodes online?

When this will be telecast
Seems to be great. Kind of Series we love here at my home.
Very much looking forward to this in the U.S.!
How about Borobudur in Central Java, Indonesia. Wolrd's largest Buddhist monument...
Imagine adding Paglia to the hosts panel!
I'd rather not.
I'd rather not think of that pseudo intellectual at all, thanks.
I watch it for the beautiful tactile powerful sensual passionate presentation of Simon Schama. What a story teller..!!!
Bar Harris Story,.fibs,.lies, all.quite similar actually.
I could not agree more. Simon Schama's brilliant enthusiasm is infectious.
I am not british and I want to see the series, but the BBC iplay doesn't let me. Does anyone know how to see it in an other country?
Frederico Ramos look for the torrent
Dan Connor, what do you mean exactly?
Something to look forward to.

Weird how despite the general idea, most of it looks to be about Europe...yet again.
Hiring three left-wingers to do a series on Civilsation is exactly why i no longer pay the license fee.

it did its job evoking a response from you, as is the job of art.
Expect a Left-wing bias.
Why?
Because it's the BBC.
can you explain what you mean by left-wing 'bias'
By 'left-wing' i mean being in favour of egalitarianism, i.e: viewing equality as preferable to heirarchy. Tsuku Yaroman this is a BBC programme, it is spelt in British English
The "painting" at 5:14 is pure garbage, I can make something that and call it art. Anyways, I might watch it just to see how biased it is.
Rachel Easton then why don't you?
