There are no plants in saltwater. Besides some macro algae. If he knew what he was doing, he would have built a structure out of live rock or something like ceramic rock infused with live bacteria. This would be for cover as well as filtration, together with the bacteria living in the sand. You generally don't use filters in saltwater because you get all the filtration from rock and sand. Also, he obviously hasn't researched the tiniest bit about any animals he keeps in this tank. You do not keep crabs like this in a community tank. Even if it can't straight out kill the snails, it's gonna partially dismember them and they're going to die and rot inside their shells. All in all, this is a completely uneducated, cruel and stupid experiment at the expense of the animals. He probably should be charged, honestly.
@@FunerealObsession I mean, if they're living in brackish water normally it depends on whether they can adjust to pure saltwater. Otherwise this crab would be dead rather quickly. They are kept in pure saltwater here, and such a tank is built differently than what was shown in the video. If the guy didn't even know that they need brackish water, it's even more sad. Some fish and invertebrates can live in both environments. Many only for a limited time, others permanently. After seeing this, though, I don't think he researched this and made the educated decision that saltwater is okay. Anyway, as I have said, this is a saltwater tank and there are no plants despite some macro algae. Him having set up the wrong water conditions doesn't change that.
A cool fact: when blue crabs dig in the sand not only is the crab trying to hide but in the wild blue crabs will dig in the sand then wait for the tide to go out which is when non aquatic crabs like fiddlers and sand bubbler crabs come out then they wait until one gets too close then they will grab the smaller crab then eat it leaving the legs and claws behind
Love your crab tank man. Here's some info for you - it's not a blue crab that you'd find in the grocery store. This is a lesser blue crab, a different species (Callinectes similis as opposed to the main food blue crab Callinectes sapidus). It actually isn't as "baby" as you think it is. It doesn't get much bigger, maybe will molt 2 more times and get up to about 3.5 inches carapace width.

Honestly I really love that you get grocery store animals and make them into pets. I did that with my rats. They were originally feeder rats and I bought them and gave them a good life and loving home. They’ve passed away since and I have Guinea pigs now that I rescued from horrible situations on Craigslist.
Crabs are hyper intelligent as well as most crustaceans. You can actually teach a crab in the wild to remember you and follow you around and stuff it's pretty impressive and I've done it a few times.
@Josh Smith You have to challenge the crab and not let it escape from you while continuing to flip it then help it back up until it gives up and it puts its claws downward and stops defending itself. Once in that state you can gently pick it up and it should remain submissive and you can place back into the water or the mud/sand and it should no longer be hostile towards you. Sometimes they will just start following you around.
I would reccomend adding more plants or rocks to hide under, it would make him feel alot safer edit: PS: horseshoe crabs grow incredibly huge. just hope you know tat
This man takes his time, explains things, talks calmly, puts some relaxing music on, and engages with us. That’s why he is one of the few good UA-camrs left that does this “genre” of video and also doesn’t beg for likes or advertise a bunch of cash grab companies and doesn’t turn it into a “tiktok style” fast talking/fast paced video. I’m thankful for it.
I always get nervous with several species living together. I felt bad for the fish, horseshoe crab, and hermit crab. Glad you got them out. The horseshoe crab looks pretty cool. Almost makes me want to get that and water based hermit crabs. I’ve only owned land hermit crabs in my life.

It’s so wonderful that you are caring for this sentient creature and showing others how intelligent they are, quite a different perspective than just being looked at as a meal. The only downside to this is that there is a never ending supply that will only stop when the demand does, till then more will suffer unless more people like you rescue them. I have not eaten ANY seafood over 25 years, I have no regrets. I also was not crazy about it and never had some types but even when I ate crabs I was VERY picky.

On the east coast we also call them Blue-Claw Crabs. This might be not in good taste, but most crab products on the east coast are made from adult blue-claws. I might love crabbing, but I am glad that you were able to rescue this one. Blueberry is very cute. I hope we get to see him grow up over the next few months. Great video.

Molting looks like an incredible process. You exit out of your old skin and come out brand new again 😄. Blueberry was seemingly looking at his previous life which had frozen in time after he molted.
Yeah, the hermit crab and snails are ok for now. But you should move them before BB gets bigger because he will for sure eat them. The scallop is currently in danger much like the fish. Connecting two tanks with a water tunnel that is too small for BB to fit through would be a good idea so you could use the scallop and maybe a oyster or two to be a natural filter for the water. Just feed BB a fairly steady diet of shrimp and fish bits with shells/scales on and bones in for the calcium and he'll grow big and likely super aggressive in no time.
