I faced my biggest fear in Geiranger, Norway! 10 Days SOLO on the NCL Prima

- Welcome to the most beautiful port I've EVER seen!! Geiranger, Norway absolutely blew me away. From the moment I woke up and looked outside my balcony door to see the landscape we were sailing by, I knew this place was something special. Today is day 5 on this 10-day Norwegian Prima Iceland & Norway cruise, and I had a feeling Geiranger was going to be a highlight of the cruise from pictures I had seen online beforehand - and I wasn't wrong!
I signed up for a shore excursion (through NCL) to visit Dalsnibba Mountain with what I knew would be incredible views... I just didn't realize how scary it would be getting up there! This really challenged my fear of heights, but I loved every second of taking in the INCREDIBLE mountainous views and scenery from the top of the lookout. We also enjoyed local coffee and pastries from a B&B on our way up the mountain, and a second breathtaking overlook with a perfect picturesque view of the ship.
Today was truly one of my favorite port days on a ship, EVER! I just love Norway and hope you enjoy getting a glimpse of the scenery as I take you along with me on this amazing day in Geiranger.

Dear Meredith, I found your channel just this morning and immediately subscribed. 😍 I started cruising solo in 2021, and in two weeks I‘m going on my 10th cruise. It‘s time for Norway again, this time all the way up to Svalbard. I have also watched your Iceland-Videos during this day, and watching your videos shortens the time until my next cruise so much. 😊
I‘ve been to Geiranger last year and I totally agree that it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. ❤ Thank you for this wonderful video, it was like being there myself.
Can‘t wait to continue travelling with you.

Just. Wow.
What a great vlog!
I'm happy that you had such a glory filled day.
I think your utterance of "stunning" surpassed your utterance of "terrifying" at around 24 minutes. Ha ha.
And we got a sample of the Philly attitude around the 25 min. mark. 😁
That timelapse segment toward the beginning is really excellent. Your commentary is seamless and unawkward.
I know you're an experienced vlogger, but I believe that you're very good at it.

@@robk236 oh nooo don’t tell me that! I only live in Philly, I’m not from here 😂🙈 thanks so much for the kind words, I was no doubt equally stunned and terrified on this day, but it will stick with me as one of the most memorable ports I’ve ever been! 😊
I love Norway! I spent a week there 25 years ago on a genealogy trip. We went to Aurland, and visited an 800 year old church where my ancestors are buried. I definitely felt like I had come home. I will hopefully cruise there next year to see more of my homeland!
@@danacasey8543 wow that’s amazing!! Sounds like it was an incredible trip! Such a beautiful country, I can’t wait to go back and see more!
I used to be a bus driver in Geiranger and Trollstigen from 1981 to 1985. My summer job during my studies. A period of life that was very enjoyable. I grew up nearby and I also have a cabin a 15 min drive from Geiranger.
@@geirtorehjelle125 wow, that is so cool! It takes a lot of skill to navigate those hairpin turns, very impressive - I could hardly stand it just as a passenger 😆 but so incredibly beautiful there!!
Thank you so much for the detail. I have this booked for summer 2025, it’s been so helpful following along! I’ll be white knuckling it too, it’s okay ❤❤❤
@@chocolatemint9225 so glad to hear that, thank you! I hope you have an amazing cruise 😊
We just got off that same cruise but we must have gone to the ports in a different order. We did Bruges first. I can’t believe we have the same issue with people throwing food to birds. The captain was not happy. He said the crew would have to clean up the bird sh*t. I’m surprised people don’t know better.
Such amazing ports and we had such wonderful weather for most of the time. And I agree the scenery is something that can’t be described. Loved every minute.
Wow so it wasn't just our cruise with bad behaving passengers 😆such a bummer that people keep throwing food overboard, it's terrible to make more work for the crew, they already work so hard! So glad to hear you had wonderful weather and that you enjoyed your cruise!! It truly was one of my all time favorites!
We did this same excursion in Sept. ‘23. The mountain top lake wasn’t frozen and the only snow on the mountains was the glaciers. It was awesome to see the fjord from the lookout. The cruise ship looked so far away. I do believe that Norway is prettier than Alaska. Great video. Thanks.
@@BJ-cy1bx that sounds so lovely! I saw pictures of the lake with all the snow melted and it was so beautiful, wish I could go back in the later summertime to see it! And I agree with you about Alaska, which I didn’t think was possible until I visited Norway! 😊
Absolutely stunning! We'll be on Iona next month doing a 'cruise-by' Geiranger after a morning stop in Hellesylt, so really looking forward to seeing those views from the ship, shame we're not getting off there, but the sail in /out should be epic! 😊
@@cruisingandexploring yes it will be no doubt! The views of the fjords sailing in and out was one of my favorite parts of the whole day, so you are in for a treat! 😊
Great courage to do that drive so I won't have to. Perfect video, thanks, and I may have mentioned on your other series that you have convinced me to do the South American itinerary. Thanks.
@@jpnbronx323 love to hear that! Thanks so much for watching, glad you have enjoyed the videos 😊
I live in this region More & Romsdal, but Sunndal were the biggest mountains are. And the highest waterfall in north europe (800m) There are cherpa steps up against the waterfall. It will get closer later when the plans are finished. The most growing green valley in the spring. Wonderful light green colors and many waterfalls around.
@@Plekteret04 wow, that is incredible! You live in such a beautiful and wonderful place, I was truly in awe being there and can’t wait to visit again someday!
We were just on a similar itinerary with Royal. Loving seeing so many of the ports we went to in your video! You got great weather in Geiranger. When we were there it was foggy so most of the higher mountain stops on our excursion was a bust. We had the same issue on our ship with stupid people feeding the birds. Our captain didn't say anything over the announcements though. They should be fined. Great job on the videos. I'm binge watching all of the Prima ones.
@@styme1124 oh no, what a bummer that the fog covered your view! I was definitely so fortunate to have nice weather that day, such a beautiful place! Can’t believe how many people out there think it’s ok to feed the birds 🤦🏻♀️ thanks so much for watching!!
Fellow solo cruiser here. What time of year was your cruise? You mentioned that the frozen lake would be beautiful in the summer….but I thought it was, but then noticed we didn’t have a time reference. I’ve thought of something similar for next summer but was curious if this is what you would expect at a particular time of the year. Thanks again for sharing!
@@tommyboynv yes it was spring when I went! This cruise was from May 23 - June 2 of this year 🙂
I have only taken 3 cruises so far, but Geiranger is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been. Thank you for posting this video. Can I suggest another cruise for you? The cruise from Sydney to Tahiti on the NCL Spirit. Also amazing.
@@thomasscott4239 I have Australia & NZ booked for late 2025 but not the route to Tahiti, I will definitely be looking into that, thank you!

@@deba175 this cruise is part of a series, you can watch all of the videos on my channel under the Norwegian Prima Iceland & Norway playlist! Hi Mer, where do you find/book all your cruises? And do you pay double supplement?
@@julietteMichielsen I always book directly with the cruise line, and NCL has reduced rates for solo cruisers. If you book in either a Studio, Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview or Solo Balcony category you will not pay double occupancy, they have those cabins priced for one person!

The captain skipped Scotland we went right to Iceland spent an every day in Iceland. I was in North America and Europe at the same times. I am not a religious person but I do Thank God.
The issue with the ships going this deep into the fjords is that the exhaust stay in the fjords, and this is not particularly good for anyone's health.
There are already ships that can go there emissions free, so it's not going to stop cruising (nor was it meant to, as such) but it will make it difficult for very large ships to go there. Havila has zero emissio ships already, so the cruising is not going away. It will howver, change.
The pastery you ate is called Berlinerbolle, they come`s with that cream you had, or you can have them with a type of Jam. Supernice either way.

@@MerCruisesSolo very cool. Keep up the great work! Im done with Caribbean cruises and the one you are on looks pretty nice.
Googled those green cars. 3hr rental doing the same route as you did is about U$225 + a toll of U$25 (for two people). Curious to know how much your excursion was for comparison??
Yes, I heard they were very expensive to rent, but wow, that’s pricey! The excursion I took was priced at $159, however after my $50 shore excursion discount plus my latitudes discount, I paid just under $93… considering how great our guide was, I’d say it was worth the price!
That is OUTRAGOUS! As a Norwegian I feel I need to apologize 🤣
Grass on roof is because that they keep the buildings cool in the summer and warm in the winter..... that is the real reason.... It also used to be on roofs in the cities, but because it is a fire hazard it is a now a ban on that.....

As a Norwegian, I hope cruise ships will be banned from entering the fjords in the future.
They ruin so much.
They can dock at the entrance and maybe take smaller electric driven ferries that don't pollute and ruin the view for others if the passengers want to enjoy the fjords.
