Superb Rob, what I particular liked was that you left SPACE in your solos and that made them sound musical and really felt each note your were playing!
Absolutely I started with my pad and using all my skills rudimentally and incooperate it all into a solo, by spreading it out eventually to the rest of the set.Rob your dead on and as usual right.
This is my favourite way of soloing. Relaxed linear melodies with great dynamics. Yesterday I was watching Bob Proctors video and found you in the comments. I was so happy because I now know what helps you to become one of the greatest drum teacher in the world 😀 greetings from Serbia 😀
I started doing this after watching one of your how to play to click videos. I feel like the practice pad definitely should be used musically. Just what I needed to do to motivate myself . I used to hate the pad until I discovered your content. Now, Iv not been a single day without it in over a year. Your tha man Rob. Thanks
Thanks Rob. I am making a song in my middle school band. And wanted to include a drum solo. I will definitely do this after school. Thanks for the lesson Rob! 🤘🏾
There are excellent drummers. And there are excellent teachers and you both. Because you teach us to think outside the box. And make the most of our ability. We love you 🙏🎶🥁From an Israeli
Hey Rob, I stopped practicing years ago, because I just wasn't inspired anymore. But since I've been watching your tutorials, the inspiration has returned big time. They just make me want to play, and the pleasure it gives me is something that I haven't experienced in a long time. It feels like I have rediscovered the instrument. Thanx for that bro, you're the best teacher I've ever had. 👍
Rob, this is absolutely brilliant advice. I'm only playing on a 4-piece so I have 4 pads on the drums and have always worked out solos on all 4 pads laying flat on the drumheads. Never before have I met anyone else aside from you now who has advised doing that. Marvelous.
Just watched your video at work because I couldn't resist... feeling very motivated and pumped to get off work and onto the kit after witnessing that solo, thank you
Rob.,, watched your video on solo techniques and I love it!! Very wise man said- nothing is set in stone but your concept of your creative skills is what matters most in music! Loved the video man!!
Thank you mr. Beatdown Brown. I was self-taught and have toured with many bands in my 30 years of playing, it was you who made me want to get a practice pad and start over again. We didn't have free instruction on the internet when I was growing up. Your passion is contagious and makes me want to improve.
Just started getting back into drumming. I bought an electric drum set at the music store and am in need of direction as far as my drumming practice goes. Your videos are helping to get me on track to doing what I love- making music. I never would've considered playing with a practice pad until you recommended it in a few other videos of yours I've watched. Thanks man
Love this vid!!! My practice pad does have a plastic rim on it, I use a Prologix pad, which does give me a little bit more to think about... definitely going to work on this tonight!!!
Great concept!!! Never think about the practice pad this way... just play it musically!!! Then evolve from that to the snare then to the kit....😎 Going to start right now!!!! 🥳 JR-PORTUGAL
Thanks for this video. Over the last year moving into an apartment playing on my kit has been difficult, so I’ve been “playing” my pad. Thinking this was silly but playing songs and practicing and trying to get sounds out of the pad. This video now confirms for me that this actually is beneficial. Thanks again... needed that. Jerry
I've been doing this with my pad for a long while now and it definitely has made me a better drummer for a long time I wasn't even touching my drum set I was just playing on my pad every chance I got sitting around a fire playing to music playing to the radio actually playing at campgrounds with friends. it's good to hear someone like Rob talking about it makes me feel like I'm not wasting my time LOL
This is such good advice. Thinking musically, having a conversation on the kit and letting the hands follow those instructions is so much more fun than trying to simply apply rudiments. Very cool. Thanks, Rob.
Brother Rob! I HEAR SOOOOO Many Influences in your solo! New Orleans March, Krupa, Buddy Rich, And Many others... To Rehash Rudiments is What a big percentage of drummers do....in a solo...Bonham Triplets, Inna-Godda-Davida solo, Tom Sawyer, etc.... To PLAY a SOLO as you are teaching it is to me a Pure expression of Making a solo your own!!! Yeah going fast 200bpm???!!! REALLY???!!! I challenge drummers to DO WHAT YOU'VE instructed.. WOW A DRUM SOLO RELIEF VALVE! Thank You Darrell Killingsworth Drummer since 1960 and not slowing down today in 2021...61 years on the kit...
I find that the Charlie Wicoxon Swing Solos book ia a helpful tool in getting my students to think about chaining rudiments into musical phrases..Thanks Rob for the topic, and you sound great. Bought a shirt too..
Excellent Rob, thanks very much for sharing! Yeah, sometimes we forget that we're musicians and have to think more musically, we're not just drummers/"choppers". Brilliant advice! 😃👍
You are correct I don’t really play my practice pad although I do make up some drills/paradiddles etc. with some rolls mixed in, very nice, I’m going to start mixing that in with my singles, doubles & paradiddles, I like it! Great tip👍🏻🤘🏻🥁🎼
I really like this idea Rob. I have found that many solos I hear and see are filled with many chops and syncopated grooves, but there is little musicality. One of the things that most impressed me about Tony William's playing and Bernard Perdie's as well as many of the solos from great drummers is the melodic texture that those drummers pulled from their kits. I watched a kid in a subway in NY one time, he had a bass, snare and a hi-hat and pulled an amazing variety of sounds and textures of sounds out of those 3 things. I really like this idea and look forward to using in my next pad time. :-) Again thank you for your excellent drum videos, they are always most encouraging as well as informative but most of all enjoyable to watch. :-)
Dave Weckl is first who comes to my mind when speaking about the musical concept of soloing. You can literaly hear the music through his flow even though he switches the accents and you may lose the count
Very enjoyable thank you.. like telling a great story.. The great thing about this wonderful world of drumming is that the key element when all is said and done is inspiration.. received and given.. We carry the baton ;) Rob this may be the most important drum video on the internet.. You know why and I know why and others will learn so in time (pun intended)
Great video and so very true. But let me just comment about your chops there at the end sounded a little like the beginning of Neil Peart's solo just in slow motion!
@Rob Brown Great video as always. I'm a new subscriber, and all your workouts and tutorials have helped me a ton! Thanks! One quick question about the Yamaha birch kit you had or still have. Is there any problem with your 12" rack tom having a dead sound on occasion or ever. I'm asking because I watched a review of the kit on another channel and the comments were full of owners of the birch kit and other higher end Yamaha kits having this issue.
My left hand double strokes are bad, I need to work on that, so I can progress from linear drumming singles. Sometimes I nail double stokes with my left hand, but not reliably.
Great vid👍 I been watching for years....just being honest, your lighting for your videos used to be much better, not sure why you changed, but maybe consider going back to your other light set up, or bulbs. Just saying, not to be negative . Great vids and teaching !!
Can I say someone widely unpopular? As a drummer, and as a music fan, I hate drum solos (and guitar solos, etc) Mostly, it just sounds like a fit on the kit that typically gets older way after than it’s over. Same with guitar solos. One of the reasons I love the police…the absolute minimalist of anything resembling as solo, guitar or drums. Think they said the most the gave Andy was 8 bars. You have to get really creative when you don’t get to wail for minutes on end. I just find them boring. Even Neil Peart’s legendary (and long) solos….start out rhythmic and fun…but eventually devolve into a snare fit. I appreciate way, WAY more his composition and how he weaves that creativity into the DNA of the song itself. That’s the skills I want to cultivate. To each their own, or course. Just figured I am strongly in the minority here lol
Rob is such a cool guy and tremendous teacher, that it feels rude to close the video before he finishes.
Who does that though?
XD
The first Rob video I saw was in Drumeo, and I definitely couldn’t turn it lol
“...you’re a musician, that plays the drums!” Precisely. 🎶🇨🇦👍🏼
I have been playing for 44 years and from you I progress and get better. I love you 🙏🎼🎶
Prettiest practice pad playing to ever grace my ears
Look at this man SWAGGING OUT on a practice pad. You're magic
Superb Rob, what I particular liked was that you left SPACE in your solos and that made them sound musical and really felt each note your were playing!
like March band??
Absolutely I started with my pad and using all my skills rudimentally and incooperate it all into a solo, by spreading it out eventually to the rest of the set.Rob your dead on and as usual right.
Musician that plays the drums !!!
Thaaaaank Youuuu Rob !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!! YOU RULE ROB!
Thanks, man 🤘🏾🙂
I have to play a solo tomorrow and don't have a drum kit. Rob, you truly are a Godsend. Thank you !
How’d it go?
@@lyonhall4845 pretty nice actually.
This is my favourite way of soloing. Relaxed linear melodies with great dynamics. Yesterday I was watching Bob Proctors video and found you in the comments. I was so happy because I now know what helps you to become one of the greatest drum teacher in the world 😀 greetings from Serbia 😀

A great deal of variance in the solo. Crisp and clean!
Thanks Rob. I am making a song in my middle school band. And wanted to include a drum solo. I will definitely do this after school. Thanks for the lesson Rob! 🤘🏾
You da man dawg!! Thanks for all your help! I totally appreciate all you do!! 🎶❤️🎶
There are excellent drummers. And there are excellent teachers and you both. Because you teach us to think outside the box. And make the most of our ability. We love you 🙏🎶🥁From an Israeli
You are so right! About concentrating to the snare drum. Only this way is correct! After that- what ever you whant👍
Such great advice Rob, I’ve played for more than 30 years and never heard soloing approached in this manner. It’s refreshing.
I hope you are doing well Rob. Thank you for keeping my mind busy and my soul full. You are one of the greats. Peace 👊
Rob, this is absolutely brilliant advice. I'm only playing on a 4-piece so I have 4 pads on the drums and have always worked out solos on all 4 pads laying flat on the drumheads. Never before have I met anyone else aside from you now who has advised doing that. Marvelous.

I don't play drums but I like listening to you playing them. Yu make them far more than just time keeping.

Right on Rob. I love soloing on my practice pads. Wise and creative advice. Yes, musicianship first. Thanks bro.
This all makes sense! Great lesson Rob!
Timely for me. Band mates want me to solo and I am uncomfortable. This helps. You got me using my pad much more. Thanks
Thanks Rob, just what I needed to get my solos going in the right direction!
Thank you for this lesson, Rob.
Love this vid!!! My practice pad does have a plastic rim on it, I use a Prologix pad, which does give me a little bit more to think about... definitely going to work on this tonight!!!
rob thank you very much !!!! I learned a lot with your classes, each class takes a lot of practice but it's worth it !!
Thanks Rob.!!! You're always inspiring.!! ♥️🥁🥁🥁
Great concept!!! Never think about the practice pad this way... just play it musically!!! Then evolve from that to the snare then to the kit....😎
Going to start right now!!!! 🥳

That was great and thank you for the inspiration Rob!!!

At first I thought the iPad screen was cracked, but realized that only was the cymbal reflection. Great lesson, thanks Rob!
Thanks Rob!
Your videos always encourage me to keep practicing
I really needed this 👍

Brilliant. Thank you for the inspiration and for another massive and crucial shift of perspective!!
Good point and very true!
You've been a constant source of brain blasts for me, continuously helping me raise my plateau, thank you so much dude!

Thanks for this great practice idea 👍 and, for that sublime solo on the kit... I was gone for a few minutes there!
Great teaching and valuable tips as always!! Thanks,Rob!

Great video as always, Rob.
I find that the Charlie Wicoxon Swing Solos book ia a helpful tool in getting my students to think about chaining rudiments into musical phrases..Thanks Rob for the topic, and you sound great. Bought a shirt too..
Awesome all over this thankyou
I love this "Back to the Pad" approach. It's like...when did playing clean rudiments fade from the program. I'm on it like a rubber pad, Rob. Thanks!
Been a subscriber for well over 3 years! Love your videos Rob, Thank you!
Rob , it"s great !!! I am from Russia.
Love your videos Rob
Rob you are the best dude! Your approach to drum techniques is unique & real maan! Your God maan!
Excellent Rob, thanks very much for sharing! Yeah, sometimes we forget that we're musicians and have to think more musically, we're not just drummers/"choppers". Brilliant advice! 😃👍

That was really sweet Rob, rreeeaaalllyyyy sweeeeet 👍🏼
Thanks for the excellent tips here, Rob. As to that solo work, “Eee Gadds.”
Your lessons are great, but I think this is one of your best! Very valuable to me and will start doing this right away!!! Best to you!
you inspire me to play more and feel the drums more than trying to learn some fancy lick - thanks Rob 🤘🏻
love practice pad videos😍
So do I 🤘🏽
You're the best rob🤘
That's mad ,thanks rob ,I was looking for cool ideas ,trying to break out of same fills n solos ,that rocks bro
And he has cool shirts! Makes this stuff fun. Grace note bliss.

No bells and wistles, no distractions whatsoever. Except a bunch of toms and cymbals on your tee - you can't do entirely without, right?
Thank you

thank you Rob.....killer insights. Play the pad.....like you have said THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL
Awsome🔥🔥🔥
Can you make a drum solo using that red practice pad + drumeo quietkick? Would love to see that 🙏
Awsome bro....
Have you done a video on your drum mic set up?
Rob’s solos are like a box of tastefull cookies

Unbelievable wow
Great video and so very true. But let me just comment about your chops there at the end sounded a little like the beginning of Neil Peart's solo just in slow motion!
Hey Rob, I'm new to your videos and find them great, thanks. Do you sell those drum pads?
What kind of metronome app did you use on your iPad?
Thanks for this video. 🥁
@Rob Brown Great video as always. I'm a new subscriber, and all your workouts and tutorials have helped me a ton! Thanks!
