Concord grape jelly and peanut butter is the most classic combination, but any jam or jelly can be used. Concord grapes are indigenous to North America, and it may be hard to find in the UK.

Peanut butter, banana & honey. Or peanut butter & honey. Or peanut butter & apple butter. Any kind of jam is great. But, one time, I did a weird thing and used some of that like mango-habanero sauce that you can get for like marinades or some such. And I used that in a PB&"J" sandwich, and it worked surprisingly well since it was so thick (it was still basically nearly "jam"). I really enjoyed the extra kick of the habanero pepper spice in it. Basically, had it lying around and was like, well, it's basically fruit & sugar just like jam, so why not? Surprisingly it worked really well. but you have to have the fairly thick stuff, not like runny "syrup." Something you can actually kind of "spread."
Most countries don't traditionally eat peanut butter and find it incredibly foreign. That's the primary rub for most people outside of North America here (it's a similar dynamic to root beer).
@@harree The popular national brands like Jif have lots of sugar but you can certainly buy "natural" brands, especially in higher end stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts, that don't. And the people who buy those brands are probably as likely to make PB&J sandwiches with them as any other. So it's a matter of preference.
DORIS M I think he used to eat them fried, like a grilled cheese. I thought that sounded absolutely disgusting until my sister made it once. It is actually really amazing!
Another version that sounds weird but is the perfect combination of sweet and tart. One side peanut butter, the other side Duke's (Southern) mayonnaise & banana slices long ways, then put sides together.
Yep. Definitely GRAPE JELLY, never jam. Never raspberry. And should be a name brand chunky peanut butter. If you get the ingredients wrong it will be terrible
I love the ends of white bread. A sandwich with two “ends” is perfect for me. Fancy peanut butter not necessary. Good ol Jif or store brand is fine. Creamy or crunchy. ❤️
Why is your Peanut Butter pale? Peanut Butter should be brown not a beige....it looks bland. also if the jelly isn't falling out of the back while eating it then you need more jelly....lol
I've never seen peanut butter as yellow as that one. In the US it is more of a light brown. Try PB&J with a glass of milk. it's a good pair. Nearly every American household has a jar of peanut butter in the cupboard. It's a staple here, like catsup. Another good combination is peanut butter on a banana. It's a great snack.
Yes!!!! And you are supposed to not use the top heel until the end. That way the top heel protects the next piece from getting stale. The prize is the 2 heal pieces at the end of the bag.
They might never of eaten them but they are talking crap when they say that 'they aren't a thing here in the UK' as they are. 100%. I'm from the north, have always eaten them, my wife from the south she has always eaten them. My father who passed away aged 80 five years ago always ate them from being a kid. The supermarkets here are full of jars of peanut butter and jam/jelly. Just because they haven't tried something doesn't mean nobody else in the country hasn't.
@@mrbrown2186 The combo originated in the United States. If PB&J are eaten elsewhere in England, it's likely because American tourists made odd requests at restaurants, & the locals tried it; or British tourists in the States tried it & liked it.
It's perfect for breakfast if you toast the bread first. Then the peanut butter is soft and gooey while the jam/jelly/pudding (whatever you call it) melts right into the peanut butter. So very good, I highly recommend it.
When it comes to jelly. I always did grape...so I don't THINK it matters so much the flavor. Jelly: overly sugary fruit spread Jam: a bit chunkier than jelly Preserves: mashed up fruit (so the healthiest out of the three) At least that's how my family always saw it. Jello here is what you call jelly
Yeah, I always thought actual "jelly" had no fruit chunks at all. Jam is usually a bit looser in consistency and does contain bits of fruit. But it's common for people to use the names interchangeably.
Agreed. This explanation of the difference between them is what I've always saw them as. Jelly is what they'd probably describe as "cheap jam". To me, jelly is like Smuckers. Super fake and blended to be smooth. I prefer jam, because it's more of a natural taste and look. You can still see that it was made from fruit. Preserves are definitely chunkier than the formers. They're the most natural and great for baking or pairing with cheese and baguette. And then Jello is the jiggly stuff, which is basically just the brand name that is all encompassing now, but we'd also call it gelatin.
This was SO entertaining!!! 😂 I never thought pb&j was unusual, but it was hilarious to watch you react after trying it for the first time. Will go make myself one after work now - it’s been ages since I’ve had one! Love y’all!!💕✨
Note: No American makes their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the same way all of the time. Some put more jelly than peanut butter. Some do the opposite. Some use crunchy peanut butter while others use creamy peanut butter. Some use jam or preserves while others use jelly. Sometimes, I use cashew or almond butter instead of peanut butter. Also, you can use any flavor of jelly or jam that you like. Even a good marmalade is great especially if it has the orange peel in it. Another thing, some people toast their bread first and it's very good that way too.
Both of you added together equals an American, Lol. He says he could have it for breakfast, lunch, or snack, but she says she would like the crust cut off... You have no idea that is 90% of every American child wants this for meals and snacks, but most children want the crusts cut off, and also in the diagonal half.
Word! My aunt and uncle met while working for Smucker's. They would bring us flavors of products that weren't sold in our market. Our house was the only one in town with Strawberry Goober for ages
You should try peanut butter and banana. A Southern staple. And since you love tomatoes, 2 slices of bread, mayo, salt n pepper, and tomato. Another staple
A tomato sandwich is best when to be made with homegrown tomatoes, in my opinion. That's why it's popular in the south. Because the growing season is longer, and the tomatoes are so much more delicious. I lived in North Carolina for a while and the only place that I think I got a better tomato was possibly California. Where I live now they're still better than store-bought, but nothing like a warm weather tomato.
@@Bamboo4U2 that is right but he ate them like I do with peanut butter on one bread, miracle whip on the other and banana between. And I believe he ate it on toast. You'll have to ask Lisa Marie.
@Timothy Clark This is a pretty dumb comment. Potatoes didn't come from Ireland and now it's pretty much a key ingredient of their cuisine. Tomatoes aren't native to Italy either. Of course they sell it here they even sell that damn travesty called Nutella.
I learned to eat toast, egg, and baked beans all stacked on one another from my brother who lived in England for a couple of years. It's one of my favorite breakfasts. What you call jelly, we call gelatin. Jell-O is a brand name of gelatin powder. Jam and jelly are different things in the US. Jam has bits of fruit in it ... jelly does not. PBJ sandwiches are a luncheon staple for many US children. Some people also like PB and banana sandwiches. I bet you would actually enjoy Waldorf salad.
@@korbermeister1 jam usually has little fruit in it and is sweeter/thicker. Your right on with preserves which has the most fruit. If you buy jam it usually has a minute amount of fruit and most of the time seeds unless you purposely by the seedless.
I saw a tv show where they said that PB&J originated during WW2. US soldiers rations were bread to eat with grape jelly as they were both very cheap. They were also given peanut butter, which was expensive back then, but the soldiers needed it for portable protein. They weren’t all intended to be eaten together on a sandwich but the soldiers naturally started eating it that way and they loved it so much they continued making the sandwiches at home and it caught on…
OK, so this was GREAT!!!! MOST Americans LOVE PBJ, though some are super picky about what goes ON them and for some it's a RARE treat, as it is FAR from low-carb OR low-cal. All three components can be as fancy or as budget as you like. A classic here is Wonder Bread, Jif (creamy OR crunchy - matter of preference, and your favorite flavor jelly (jam) - grape and strawberry tend to be most popular, though I'm a boysenberry gal myself when I can find it. I also prefer crunchy peanut butter. You CAN go artisan bread, organi, all-natural peanut butter (where you have to stir it each time) and small batch fancy preserves if you want, but the classic I described above is SUCH a comfort food here. It's an incredibly popular elementary school (reception through Junior school) lunch because it is easy to prepare and doesn't need refrigeration AT ALL vs. meats, cheeses, and especially anything with mayonnaise that work better with refrigeration. As far as Jell-o, like Kleenex (tissue), it is a brand name that has become a general-use word. it is also called gelatin - which just got shortened to jelly or Jell-o. I'd LOVE to see y'all do a video on retro foods from the 1950s-70s in the US ... gelatin was used a LOT in both savory and sweet applications, most of which seem crazy now. :-) The video from St. Elmos Fire fully encapsulates the relationship Americans your age have with PBJ (video quality not so great, but good audio) ua-cam.com/video/AfVjdXppnF4/v-deo.html Finally, Lia, I'm with you. I'm not a huge fan of the end piece (which some call the heel).
Next time, try toasting the bread first. It's amazing! You should also try a fluffer-nutter sandwich (peanut butter, but try Peter Pan peanut butter & marshmallow fluff)
I love watching your videos!!! In America jelly is made with fruit juice, jam is made with actual fruit-so it has small bits of fruit and seeds, then we have preserves which is made with large chunks of fruit. Jello is just a name brand for a gelatin dessert (what you guys call jelly). Hope this helps a little.
From the USA im glad yall liked it!! And fyi this sandwich is pretty much a blank canvas jaja... Pit whatever jam you want! Any type of nut butter!! Theres almond butter, walnut butter... Or if you feel fancy you can use nutella!!
I agree. It sounds super weird. But then again their beans are plain aren't they? I've never had anything other than seasoned baked beans, like what u get with American bbq
In my household we never use the heel (end piece) for anything but toast, which we all fight over. We eat them mostly for lunch or anytime you need a quick snack!
In America, “jelly” refers to a fruit juice infused spread, “jam” has chunks of fruit. « Preserves » are super chunky. However, folks use the terms interchangeably sometimes.

Jif and strawberry jam is the best! Try it on seeded rye bread. That's my fav way.
Joel: “Why do I like it?”
My son: “Because it’s delicious, duh!” lmao
As my son is eating a PB&J for dinner.
How healthy lol
I'm a bit surprised people think pb and j's would be gross. Sweet and savory- a match made in heaven! 😁
Most countries don't traditionally eat peanut butter and find it incredibly foreign. That's the primary rub for most people outside of North America here (it's a similar dynamic to root beer).
Exactly. That’s why God gave us honey mustard.
Always creamy Jif peanut butter and Welch's grape jelly, here lol
Yeah, but it's not a very healthy peanut butter.
Yup👍!
My faves, too!
Ultimate grossness.
@@McDougle625 yeah, but it's good...and who's trying to be healthy when they eat PB&j? Lol
I can't believe you two never had peanut butter jelly sandwiches before! Next time try it on TOASTED WARM bread! ..It's decadent!
And butter the bread. 👍
Mass Lass Only ever have it on warm toast with a cup of PG Tips. Lovely jubbly 😋 Have yet to try a peanut and jam sandwich. 🧐
Elvis' favorite--Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches. Try that!
Peanut butter, banana and honey sandwiches are good.
Forgot bacon and honey Doris
DORIS M I think he used to eat them fried, like a grilled cheese. I thought that sounded absolutely disgusting until my sister made it once. It is actually really amazing!
They are amazing fried in butter.
Another version that sounds weird but is the perfect combination of sweet and tart. One side peanut butter, the other side Duke's (Southern) mayonnaise & banana slices long ways, then put sides together.
we leave the ends (heals) until last 'cause it keeps the bread from going stale.
you need grape smuckers jelly and jif peanut butter
ur mom no smackers strawberry
Preserves and Jif!
Yes!!!!! I love love love jif extra crunchy!
Grape jelly and Peter Pan is the BEST!!
Sometimes lightly toast the bread so the PB melts as you put it on. mmmmmmmm!!!
Yep. Definitely GRAPE JELLY, never jam. Never raspberry. And should be a name brand chunky peanut butter. If you get the ingredients wrong it will be terrible
juscurious yes! Skippy for sure
Lia: I bet, I bet it would be nice without the crust..
Uncrustables: *exists*
Save the crusts for me!
@@Mycroftsbrother me too😜

I I just about live off of PB&j
Better with a big glass of milk
Kids in the US live on these sandwiches at school for their lunches.
Used to, many schools ban them now because of peanut allergies.
"I could eat this for lunch, dinner, and breakfast....and a snack!"
Welcome.
Join the club! :)
I love the ends of white bread. A sandwich with two “ends” is perfect for me. Fancy peanut butter not necessary. Good ol Jif or store brand is fine. Creamy or crunchy. ❤️
Roberta Colarette the ends of bread toasted with loads of butter! Yum.
Ricky Nichols
Yum is right. ❤️
If Joel ever tries Reese's Peanut Butter cups, He'd be in trouble
We get them over here and Reese's Pieces too.
Why is your Peanut Butter pale? Peanut Butter should be brown not a beige....it looks bland. also if the jelly isn't falling out of the back while eating it then you need more jelly....lol
Umm no, a pb&j should not be messy. If think fall out you did not spread the jelly on the bread
Yeah, I don't think that's right. Should be made of toasted peanuts. Should have gotten the American peanut butter, for a proper test.
i haaaaate too much jelly the texture makes me cringe
Well the English like to cut the corners off on any sandwich too so. Lol
Absolutely not. Jelly to peanut butter ratio is what makes or breaks the sandwich, and too much jelly destroys it.
The end slice is typically known as the "heel"
Or the "bum"
The butt.
and never eat it. Give it to the birds.
I call it the butt, lol
In our house, we call the ends “butt bread”... grape jam next time
Same re butt!
We call them heels, lol.
Have always called them heels, and I'm the only one in the family that loved them.
Im gonna call them butts now
Kelly Cooper Joel made a booty bread sandwich 😂🤢
It is a requirement to drink cold milk with PBJ. Actually I think it is a law.
Elodia Harris yes!
Yes, When I was 10.
Chocolate milk!!
Not in Texas. Here you can substitute the milk or any beverage with sweet tea or Dr Pepper.
I used to dip the sandwich in the milk. So good.
I call the end of the bread the “butt” 😂
"Heel."
It's heel
Ok so the ends of the bread we call the heels. Your jelly is our Jello.
No one says heels lmao
I have always heard them called that and I still do call the ends heels.
We call it the butt !!!
Yes!!!! And you are supposed to not use the top heel until the end. That way the top heel protects the next piece from getting stale. The prize is the 2 heal pieces at the end of the bag.
@@casinatorzcraft another vote for heels.
If you never ate PB&J as kids, what in the world did you eat???????!
I had jam sandwiches as a kid
Cathy Vickers Or it was introduced by the military...
@@bd7852 Yeah, I hadn't thought of that. All those Yanks in WWII!!
Jelly: Cheap translucent fruit spread
Jam: Posh fruit purée
Jello: Gelatin Desert
It's perfect for breakfast if you toast the bread first. Then the peanut butter is soft and gooey while the jam/jelly/pudding (whatever you call it) melts right into the peanut butter. So very good, I highly recommend it.
When it comes to jelly. I always did grape...so I don't THINK it matters so much the flavor.
Jelly: overly sugary fruit spread
Jam: a bit chunkier than jelly
Preserves: mashed up fruit (so the healthiest out of the three)
At least that's how my family always saw it.
Jello here is what you call jelly
Yeah, I always thought actual "jelly" had no fruit chunks at all. Jam is usually a bit looser in consistency and does contain bits of fruit. But it's common for people to use the names interchangeably.
Blueberry, raspberry or cherry
Britt Halaas and jello: British jelly
I won’t confuse the issue with “apple butter “ 🤔😂,, but ,,,, YUM !
This was SO entertaining!!! 😂 I never thought pb&j was unusual, but it was hilarious to watch you react after trying it for the first time. Will go make myself one after work now - it’s been ages since I’ve had one! Love y’all!!💕✨
haha thanks Vicky! ❤️
There’s something comforting about a PB&J. ❤️
Who else drinks it with milk to balance the overwhelmingness of the pb
Heck yeah. Especially with a warm or toasted PB and J.
@@sharonshade4437 yaaas
I was going to say the same!
milk is a must and not soy, oat, almond milk
You can’t eat a pb&j without a glass of milk on the side😂
Who would have thought that the only thing five-year-olds will eat tastes good.
going double ends is a straight up power move, my friends
Double ends when you just opened the loaf is the true power move
In the South, we loved Tomato and Mayonnaise sandwiches on white Wonder bread.
maybe the Appalachians
Both of you added together equals an American, Lol. He says he could have it for breakfast, lunch, or snack, but she says she would like the crust cut off... You have no idea that is 90% of every American child wants this for meals and snacks, but most children want the crusts cut off, and also in the diagonal half.
These two would have a conniption if you sent them a jar of Goober Grape!😂
I love Goober Grape!! ❤️
Word! My aunt and uncle met while working for Smucker's. They would bring us flavors of products that weren't sold in our market. Our house was the only one in town with Strawberry Goober for ages
Yeaaaa Goober Peanut butter & jelly
You should try peanut butter and banana. A Southern staple. And since you love tomatoes, 2 slices of bread, mayo, salt n pepper, and tomato. Another staple
A tomato sandwich is best when to be made with homegrown tomatoes, in my opinion. That's why it's popular in the south. Because the growing season is longer, and the tomatoes are so much more delicious. I lived in North Carolina for a while and the only place that I think I got a better tomato was possibly California. Where I live now they're still better than store-bought, but nothing like a warm weather tomato.
cucumber, mayo, salt & pepper on toasted bread
PB banana and honey
PB and thinly sliced apple slices
Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich was peanut butter and bananas on bread then buttered and fried in a skillet.
That peanut butter doesn’t look right. You need Jif brand
I soooo agree!
It's all about Adams natural PB for me :) Although it is true that choosy moms choose Jif
@@louisvillesmark6668 I see what you did there. Ha ha.
I like the Skippy all natural it's really good
although many folks like the super chunky
i like JIF natural I find it even sweeter and better than normal one
The proper PBJ is Welch's grape jelly and Jiffy peanut butter. Try banana and peanut butter - see Elvis.
Prefer the bread toasted, and served with a cold glass of milk.
gawainethefirst 😳
Yes, very tasty like that. The warm toast makes the peanut butter smoother.
I always preferred to swap the bread for fresh hot pancakes. That's like toast, which by the way is also scrumptious. Or just pb&j in a spoon 😋
3:26 - “Switch spoons and jars.” THOSE ARE NOT SPOONS!!! 😂
Most say either strawberry or Concord grape is classic.
Next try peanut butter and banana
Wasn't that the go-to snack Elvis loved?
@@Bamboo4U2 that is right but he ate them like I do with peanut butter on one bread, miracle whip on the other and banana between. And I believe he ate it on toast. You'll have to ask Lisa Marie.
"Who puts peanut butter and jelly on sandwiches?" Ummmmmmmm......EVERYBODY!! Lolololol. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!
Not Brits or Irish apparently
😂😂
My mom was from Europe and she told me every one of our family from there hated peanut butter. Apparently most Europeans don't like it
Actually pretty much no one outside of America.
@Timothy Clark
This is a pretty dumb comment. Potatoes didn't come from Ireland and now it's pretty much a key ingredient of their cuisine. Tomatoes aren't native to Italy either.
Of course they sell it here they even sell that damn travesty called Nutella.
Now, take it to the Elvis level: peanut butter and bananas!
Rich Diddens delicious.
And bacon! :P
And bacon, fried
And honey...
yes its very good with bananas your peanut butter looks very weak
I learned to eat toast, egg, and baked beans all stacked on one another from my brother who lived in England for a couple of years. It's one of my favorite breakfasts.
As for pbj-it's a comfort food if you do it right. To be honest, I think they needed my expert pbj skills. And pb with banana sandwich is fabulous!
I love the ends of the loaf of the bread. We call them the “heels” of the bread. Yes just like the heels of your foot.
Me too
Same
cmonta001 yep. I dig out the back heel so I can make my first sandwich out of both ends.
The ends are the "Suegra", spanish for mother in law... Because no one likes them! Lol. Ony a joke, I also like the end
I like the heel toasted😋
Just FYI, they're known as PB&J, not PBJ, usually.
Yeeeaaahhh, but sometimes we are lazy and refuse to say the "and" 😉 lol
I tin a PBJ was a WWII flying boat.
Technically it's gelatin but I think most people call it Jello. And not just the powder, you can buy Jello pre-made in the store.
There is also "preserves" as well as jam and jelly in the US.
Jam has no bits of fruit in it, you're thinking of preserves. Jam is sweeter jelly with more sugar and spreads like soft butter
@@korbermeister1 jam usually has little fruit in it and is sweeter/thicker. Your right on with preserves which has the most fruit. If you buy jam it usually has a minute amount of fruit and most of the time seeds unless you purposely by the seedless.
arjaygee wait til they try bacon (streaky bacon) on it. 😍
The video from St. Elmos Fire fully encapsulates the relationship Americans your age have with PBJ (video quality not so great, but good audio) ua-cam.com/video/AfVjdXppnF4/v-deo.html
Finally, Lia, I'm with you. I'm not a huge fan of the end piece (which some call the heel).
You're a PBJ connoisseur! I need to try all the variations of PBJ sandwiches now!!!!
you need a glass of milk with it. And you should try with grape or strawberry "jam"
Totally agree. Grape or strawberry!
Chocolate milk and American peanut butter and grape jelly.

Also, btw, it is generally eaten for lunch with a glass of milk.
It's PB and J! My mom called the bread ends, "heels." I eat them, my wife does not.

Who puts beans on toast? That is equally absurd to Americans.
As Lia might say, beans - tick, toast - tick, okay, let's give it a go!
Beans on toast is good! Yes, I am American.
I agree. It sounds super weird. But then again their beans are plain aren't they? I've never had anything other than seasoned baked beans, like what u get with American bbq
The beans our actually canned with a tomato sauce. Much like our pork and beans.
As a Brit I can tell you beans on toast is the best dish ever
In my household we never use the heel (end piece) for anything but toast, which we all fight over.
We eat them mostly for lunch or anytime you need a quick snack!
"Why do I like this?" Because it's a classic and good!
Creamy Jif, grape jam, fresh bread
He looks like he just had a religious experience that changed his life.
In America, “jelly” refers to a fruit juice infused spread, “jam” has chunks of fruit. « Preserves » are super chunky. However, folks use the terms interchangeably sometimes.
When Joel said "Oo it's lovely" in reference to fries dipped in a milkshake, it reminded me of Mr. Humpries or one of the characters from Are You Being Served.
