While checking out different versions of this song, I noticed something a bit odd. Both Betty Jo Bangs and Joanna Neel claim songwriting credits, and for different publishing houses. I put a pic of Neel's version on Decca about 30 seconds in.
I can't seem to run across an explanation. Did Neel buy the song from Bangs and replaced her for songwriting credits? Or did one just plagiarize the other, though that seems unlikely, as they're both under BMI.
    See more here: blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/06...
or Google "Betty Jo Bangs WFMU" Thanks to WFMU listener Greg G. for originally posting this fairly clean MP3 on their website. I took the liberty of snipping out a few of the pops and clicks.

3/26/13 UPDATE: Joanna and Bob Neel are NOT the earliest copyright registrant of this song. It is in fact first registered to Betty Jo Bangs. Copy the following:
    RE0000749541 / 1997-01-08 EU0000153797 / 1969-12-18
and paste it in the Google search bar. Stroll down the entries and you'll see the earliest copyright registrant was Bangs.

I can unequivocal guarantee that Daddy Was A Preacher, Mama Was A GoGo Girl was written solely by Betty Jo Bangs. She agreed to let Joanna Neel record it but did not give her permission to claim songwriting credits. Joanna Neel stole the songwriting credits when she recorded it. Betty Jo Bangs holds a copyright that predates any copyright that Joanna Neel may have.

Appreciate your details on this. I'm not real familiar on how Copyright Encyclopedia works but by putting "RE0000749541 / 1997-01-08 EU0000153797 / 1969-12-18 " in the Google search bar takes you right there, scroll down the entries and there it is. I'm updating my notes for my post, thanks again...

I'd appreciate that since it's a major point of my posting and was hoping someone could fill in the blanks. Given the 500 character limit here, you may want to send it via a UA-cam personal message.

Composer credits are different. Betty Jo Bangs credited as composer on her own version, Bob and Joanna Neel on Joanna Neel's version. Sorry, but it doesn't add up.

Betty tried on several occasions to get this rectified. The last attempt was made when she got Kenny Rogers brother Lelan to look into it. Seems there is big Nashville politics behind this. Lelan came back to Betty and apologised that there was nothing he could do.

At the least the Neels weren't able to make this song a big hit, although I think it was a "turntable hit" in some markets. It's hard to find anything about how well this song did on the charts. I'll bet if the song had done better for the Neels, Bangs could have afforded to make more of a fight. I did reference this story on a YT post of Neel's version: Daddy Was A Preacher But Mama Was A Go Go Girl by Joanna Neel

Joanna Neel, who is Also Known As Betty Jo Bangs. Joanna Neel recorded "Daddy Was A Preacher, Mama Was A Go-Go Girl" first as Betty Jo Bangs...get it Betty Jo BANGS (slang for....). Released on label Tal Star, and distributed by Sounds Of Music in Belen New Mexico. Song was promoted in March 1971 as by Betty Jo Bongs (misspelled) in Billboard...Then around July 1971 she recorded it again in Hollywood CA. It was the b side to a-side" A Perfect Stranger" and was released Sept 1971 on Decca...srj

Betty Jo Bangs was NEVER known as Joanna Neel. Not sure where you got your info from, but is incredibly wrong. Actually talked with her about that particular fact about an hour ago on the phone from her nursing home. Don't make up facts, kind sir. She is family to me, and I KNOW the facts.

Betty Jo Bangs and Jo Anna Neel are two separate people. I met Jo Anna Neel when I was a little girl. My Daddy went on tour with her. He was a piano player. I still have the 45 she gave me. I, too, have been a singer nearly my whole life. Partly because of the lasting impression Jo Anna Neel made on me at such a young age.

I knew Betty Jo, she claims The Neel's stole the song. That's what I know.

Eric Johnson and they did. Just played music with her at her home over the last weekend and we discussed this in detail.

Betty Jo (Joanna) Bangs MARRIED Bob Neal & became Joanna Neal, no? And then Bob Neal, her husband, got cowriter credit for slicking up the lyrics a little bit. The original starts off rhyming "Girl" and "Girl," and the remake fixes that, more or less.

If this is incorrect, then several internet sources have it wrong. I must say that the Joanna Neal version is better... (fight me)

Would love to fight you. Betty married Bob Bangs. That's why she has the name, dumbass.
