- We spoke to young adults in the Kinshicho area in Tokyo's Sumida Ward to get a piece of their minds on Coming of Age Day, which was celebrated across Japan on Jan. 13, the first “seijin no hi” of the new decade and the new imperial era. The national holiday marks the passing into adulthood for those whose 20th birthday falls between April 2 of the previous year and April 1 of the current year. While venues and modes of celebration vary, it often involves getting dressed in "furisode" (a style of kimono with long sleeves) for women and "hakama" for men. It usually starts with a formal ceremony and ends with parties and drinking.

Loved these! Especially the girl who wants to travel and be a tour conducter. I'm not that old yet, but it made me remember what it was like to be 20. I live in the US and we do not have any kind of coming of age ceremony here, unless you count having your 18th birthday party, but that's a very singular affair, not a community thing like this. I think i would have loved this kind of tradition.
