Hi Dave . I have a question not related to this video . I hope you don’t mind . Have you ever used the festool Vecturo multi purpose tool? Thoughts ? Thank you
David Stanton Hi I enjoy watching your videos ! The Vectro looks great but it doesn’t take the Star type blades . Only the cordless Vectro does . Weird . There is an adapter made by Fein which you can use on the Vectro corded however it changes the position of the blade where some of the accessories may not work as intended . Keep those videos coming . Thank you again for getting back to me . Maybe you can do a video on the Vectro . I would look forward to that
I've been reverse-scoring laminated boards using my TS55 for years. You are literally the only other guy I've seen do it. I have no idea why it's not standard practise for everyone.
Thanks Kevin Bower! I think people are concerned that people new to woodworking may forget to reduce the plunge to 2 mm and pull the saw towards them at full depth of cut. Could take off on them.
great video. ive been an onsite chippy for 20 years and never seen someone reverse cut in order to get downward cut action. Makes perfect sense. thank you very much for sharing mate.
Hi David, can you tell me please what's the benefits to use two parallel guides if one of them attached to the grs 16 with the flip stop , it's not about this video but sometimes people use this method. i am using just one attached to grs 16 and one flip stop, and it's accurate and repeatable cuts thanks
Hi Dave, I'm a bit late to reply on your video. I've bought a TS55 and used it to cut melamine. On top I used your method and it worked fine. But I still have some chipout on the bottom of the pannel. Blade: fine cut festool Speed: 5 Depth: 20mm (18mm pannel) Thanks Kr
Dave, do you always do a back cut or just on melamine? I do a forward scoring cut on hardwood ply and recently some IKEA counter tops (thick walnut veneer over particle board) and got pristine results. A nice feature of the makita saw is the dedicated 2mm scoring stop that is independent of the main depth adjustment. I’ve since invested in a domino, sander and the CT-15 vac, and I’m tempted to get the TS-55 just because of the plug-it cord :)
Hi fotopdo! Not always but with melamine definitely. It is just that little bit better to do a reverse score. The makita track saw will be plenty good enough.
Hi!!! Dave. Could you clarify the process of cutting the factory edge? You just place the track and trim it slightly with a new cut? Then reference from the new cut? What if that isn't necessarily square? Could you please help me through my mental duh block! I have the woodpeckers parallel track guide system, but also have the TSO track square. I'm debating going with the TSO now..... Thanks for you patience. Joe Murphy
I set the guide rail at approx 1/4" from the factory edge at both ends of the sheet of plywood. Then I use the parallel guides to clean up the opposing factory edge. Then the GRS-16 comes into play from either edge I have cut. If you are going to get TSO products please consider using my affiliate link. tsoproducts.com?aff=2
Home center ply is actual size, 4x8 in the US because it’s mostly wall sheathing or underlayment and it it needs the confirm to standard stud/joist spacing. But when you order “real” cabinet grade ply from a specialty supplier it will be just over size for the purpose of truing up the edges.
Hi Vincent, Carbatec have ceased TSO. You can try a mail forwarding service from the states which greatly reduces the freight cost. Try this one. www.myus.com/where-we-ship/australia/
great video and amazing product, would like to see how you apply edge tape, or a link to a video for this that you may have already done? Thanks heaps...
Dave, was just looking at the TSO site and you mentioned the GRS-16 PE. I’m sure on one of your live streams you explained why you chose that squaring tool. Can you link to it or please explain. Cheers.
@@DavidStanton Dave Stanton Live, right? Subscribed. Can you tell me, briefly, why you chose the GRS-16 PE over the other one? I recall maybe that you can use it on both at the beginning and end of the guide rail. I went to order the parallel guides and they were out out of stock for the 30”/50” kit. ☹️
This is the channel. ua-cam.com/channels/p-uQhW2V24r7djg_9gXRNQ.htmlvideos I like the PE version so I can work front or back and also so I can use the back of the guide rail as a guide for my other routers as shown here. ua-cam.com/video/Qi4VlpH7Fh0/v-deo.html
Hi Dave, Is that track from TSO the right hand or left hand version? I am about to order, but don’t want to spend a fortune getting shipping from US if it’s the wrong model. Cheers Brad from Sydney
I can see why you might want to get the 20/30/50 lengths of the track, so do you think that's enough to do pretty well with the system and not have to get both the right & left hand components? I already own the basic right-angle component that clips to the track.
Hi Jonathan Howe! If you have no need of the parallel feature, just wanting to have the flipstop function for repeat length cutting, then no need. But if you want to do parallel cuts often then the full set is brilliant. I also got the guide rail connectors so I could leave the GRS-16 on a 1400 guide rail permanently. tsoproducts.com/tso-parallel-guide-system/guide-rail-adapter-for-tpg-parallel-guide-system-fits-right-or-left-hand/?aff=2
@@DavidStanton I watched another TSO video showing its calibration & use when making thin cuts & for that you would need both sides. So seems like what I would need is either the 20/30 left & right (or complete system if I also want the 50) and then add the guide adapter since I've already got the GRS-16. I don't guess these go on sale occasionally, eh? ;)
Het Dave. Could you demo the system with narrow rips? I'm interested in buying the system but as I don't own a table saw I would also want to see of it can handle repeatable 10cm cuts. Would you also trust the system one sided to cut lengthwise 2.4 metre cuts with a longer rail?
Hi Alex Uyttendaele! None of the parallel guide systems will let you cut with only 10 mm under the guide rail. There is too much chance of the material slipping. They will all tell you it is possible to cut narrow stock but don't risk it. You can cut the width that the first cushion strip, grip tape holds onto the stock. nothing narrower. Festool's version has out riggers that give you a measurement to cut and keep the waste. Personally I add 2 mm to the dimension to allow for the kerf of the blade and make my thin cuts on the outside of the guide rail.
Hi Kevin Carter! Depending on the parallel guide 1270 mm (50 inches) with TSO's longest. But, they can be joined with their guide rail connectors and then 2.4 metres would be easy enough. But they get a bit hard to manage too long.
Hi Franks DIY! That is correct but the principle is still the same regarding cutting cleanly through sheet goods, even with a circular saw and straight edge.

It's like a beefed-up version of the Kreg Rip-Cut! Just as fast, but with the improved accuracy of the track over the guide fence. Nice!

One pro that makita's plunge saw has is the scoring feature. Have your full depth set and just press a small button to do the score cut first.
