Can the Harley Benton Fusion iii clean up?

  • Hey everyone today I did a brief test to see how the Harley Benton Fusion iii would do acting the part ( by splitting the bridge humbucker ) of a traditional SSS Stratocaster, in this case my 1982 Fender JV Strat. This is NOT MEANT TO COMPARE THEM, there are simply way too many differences between the two but the purpose of this is to see if the Fusion can manage convincing strat tones at a gig while in stock form. The pickups on the Fusion are closer to the bridge, hence they sound brighter, especially the neck pickup. The 24th fret on the Fusion is where a neck pickup on a Strat is supposed to be.

    This was super helpful. I’ve been looking for an all around band practice/gigging guitar and the HB is on my list but the clean tones were the big question. Answer? Perfectly fine! The brightness might even help a bit in the mix. Plus, I’m looking for 24 frets because we’re trying to do Money by Pink Floyd and, whoa, those whole tone bends on the 22nd fret are a beast! Thanks for the great video.

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  Рік тому

      Yeah those bends on some guitars even with 22 frets can be rough just because of how tough it can be to get your hand in that position (Les Pauls for example). I think the cleans on this guitar stock are definitely decent enough

    Just the video I was looking for. I've bought the same HB second hand quite cheaply and specifically for surf music. I was really impressed with the cleans. But I didn't have a Fender to compare it side to side. Now I can sleep peacefully, as you've demonstrated that Fender wouldn't be an improvement. What is interesting, event the split humbucker sounds very close to the classical fender bridge single, maybe just a bit less powerful.

  • @Canadianwheelchairguitar
    @Canadianwheelchairguitar 2 роки тому

    I thought the HB had more bass to it but they were close. As for mods, I like to keep things as is. I moded my Epiphone Explore in 2003. Only guitar I've ever changed. It came with "Gibson" pickups, it was like our band suddenly had 2 bass players. I switched them to active EMGs, 60 in the neck & 81 in the bridge. Really warm clean sound on the neck with an excellent metal chug on the bridge.

      modifying is weird, sometimes I want to modify things but end up not doing it... other times I will do it out of sheer necessity. When a guitar is being held back on a functional level that's when I find it necessary but other than that I don't find myself rushing nowadays to change things.

    Nice comparison, no mistaking the Fender sound TBH, maybe with a pickup swap I would like it more. I would also be interested to hear a few chords unplugged for comparison - I often play without plugging in (kid sleeping, it is late or just can't be bothered) so the acoustic part is almost as important to me. And guitars that resonate always felt more like real instruments vs cheap guitars that felt like toys.

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому

      Yep, the JV strat just has "it" so to speak, and quite frankly it wouldn't matter what pickups I throw into the Fusion it's never going to have the same sound and that's ok! Just like how the JV would never be able to pull off the aggressive HB tones in the bridge, it's just part of life.
      I think your second point is why I love my Gibson ES-339 so much, it's a guitar I can sit with not plugged in and enjoy every bit as much as I do when it's going through a tube amp.

    I don't know saying the fusion series overall is value for money is an understatement imo. Fender MIM or Epi could be considered value for money. Getting roasted maple + stainless steel frets + wilkinson or floyd rose + locking tuners + good overall finishes for this price needs to be described in some other way. HB is owned by Thomann so they can cut the middle man fee and they may be selling at a loss or just breaking even too to get the brand name established. Also Roswells don't sound that bad to be honest. If Fender made them and named them Tex Mex Modern with vintage roots or something nobody would have thought they are out of place.

    He devuelto una Fusión III por problemas de montaje.
    Se trata de una guitarra con una relación calidad/precio excelente pero tiene ciertos inconvenientes.
    Las pastillas en limpio suenan peor que las Wilkinson.
    En mi opinión el sonido brillante no viene de los trastes de acero, si no del cuerpo de madera de sapeli. El sapeli da un sonido con graves menos resonantes y más seco que la caoba por eso creo que la guitarra se defiende mejor con ligeras distorsiones.
    Con alta distorsión las pastillas embarran el sonido.
    El arce del mástil en las dos guitarras que he probado tiene la veta muy revirada por lo que no favorece a la calidad final del instrumento. Un mejor control de calidad en la selección de la madera en este punto se notaría muchísimo
    Un saludo y gracias por su vídeo.

    Fender pickups win hands down for me. I'd definitely be looking at upgrading the pickups if I got the Harley Benton for playing live. However, I would tell anyone looking for their first guitar and wanting a HB to pick this up over the cheaper Harley Bentons. Some of the really cheap guitars they sell have cardboard laminate bodies which is a no go for me. Even if its a first guitar get something with some resale value, and these fusions might actually hold some of their value down the line.

      @@DerEchteBold i saw a youtuber cut open the te-20 and there was cardboard on top which is why it cracks sometimes if you try and make it string through. i imagine this is the same process for all of their cheapest guitars since they are the oldest HB models. HB hasnt really come out with sub 200 dollar guitar models for years, so buying a newer HB is the go to imo to avoid poor design choices.
      Now that squier has moved affiinty guitar production to indonesia i think the quality to price beat out harley benton, and their contemporary line also do a good job competeing with fusions. I think that's why they sound so different even if you would drop in the same Pickups, they still would sound very different because of the different pickup positions. • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Yes exactly, and there are a few other reasons for that as well. In a bigger venue, the green room is often bigger and some dive bars call closets a green room and more often than not security watching to make sure noone sneaks in or out through the back.... so there is a safer place to leave gear both before and after your set. In those instances I just bring my main guitars, I have never had any incident playing a show like that with a more expensive guitar. It's the dive bars where I've had guitars stolen and broken... can be heartbreaking stuff when it happens and I'd much rather someone make off with my HB than my 30 year old strat.

    Hi and thank you for this video. I've found your comparison invaluable as I own an American Fender and just thinking about buying one HB Fusion for gigging. But honestly after I discovered the fact that some HB bodies are partly built of cardboard I was a bit disappointed. Is the body of this guitar made completely of solid wood or it has that layer of cardboard on top of it? My guess is all their guitars with a top veneer are manufactured in the same way (cardboard on top). Perhaps it is not the case with this matte color.

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Apparently, it was some of the older "veneers" that were made of a similar material as "cardboard" and it blew up pretty big. This is a big concern and I share it. I don't have a dog in this race so if it was a really normal thing and I saw it first hand I would be roasting them for it. I did just send them an e-mail asking for some clarification on it.

    So the Fender isn't worth the extra money, is it?

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому

      Depends what you want, for me it absolutely is because it does a few things the HB simply can't just due to basic design that only really a strat can pull off but there are also enough other brands making strats that you wouldn't necessarily need it to be a Fender branded model. The thing with this specific comparison and these two guitars are the bridge pickup being different and also the fact the HB has three extra frets on it, which alters the position of the neck neck up and how it reacts in upper registers. If you want something that can get close to a strat sound the HB will do the job fine, but if you want THE strat sound well, its gotta be a traditional strat design imho

  • @andrewkrodel7976
    @andrewkrodel7976 2 роки тому

    The only thing you can compare is the middle pickup. The split humbucker is not the same, and the neck pickup not the same as one is a 21 fret guitar and the other is a 24 fret guitar. The placement of that neck pickup completely changes the tone.

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Hence why I specified it was NOT a comparison...
      The purpose wasn't to compare at all, it was to test to see if the HB would get me in the ballpark as stated in the video and in the description. 👍

    I can't comprehend why you would think that HB sounds brighter because of the SS frets and not because of the cheap pickups? Or even trem block? Or the wood itself and mass? I mean, pickups are the biggest sound factor with electric guitars after all, frets are the last (if even any)...

    • @AudiomoMusic
      @AudiomoMusic  2 роки тому

      I did a video soley exposing the pickups on this guitat last week and it was a separate talking point I wanted to make, so I compared it with the Eart HSS. edge to them that realy show up with clean tones.
