The "shoots up his school" and the "blame it on Marilyn" parts are referencing the Columbine school shooting back in 1999, where the media was blaming the rock artist Marilyn Manson for the actions of the shooters. Idk if you're old enough to recall the event.

I'm 36 been a eminem fan from day one ..he hit the radio a few times but everytime they shut him down...people can say what they want to but I think it's because his content and lyrics was too much to handle..everyone says he made it because he was white ..NO! He made it because he was different

Yeah, funny shit is that he just blown up worldwide before this song. The previous single from the same album was The Real Slim Shady which was played on radio stations like hourly... The same with Without Me from 2002. But basically every single of his was played on the radio in those years.
Oh, and this one is from 2000.
They still play those songs on the radio every couple of hours. I work for a dental clinic so the radios always going and they play The Real Slim Shady, Lose Yourself and Without Me every single day and often multiple times a day.

I heard My Name Is on the radio before the album dropped in early 99. After that, I MIGHT have heard him on the radio, but I'm not certain at all. My Name Is I distinctly remember hearing on the radio and that was only one time. Wanted to hear it again, but didn't get to until the day SSLP dropped months later.

funny thing is i remember being 9 years old riding back of my step dads car listening to 97.9 and hearing this song played all the time... looking back on it, its like he called the radio out for not playing him, then this is the only song they played all the time... when the track was brand new... they dont play this now.

Manson got fucking crucified by the media after Columbine happened. What was great about that was the ones that would bring him on their shows to 'interview' aka try to embarrass him and make him look bad on national television and he handled every single one with intelligence and patience while remaining calm and collected. His career did take a huge hit after that when his next album's singles directly referenced all the fear mongering and the shootings and the media's influence. His radio play became non existent and his videos were rarely played after he took his own shots back through his music.
...but Em doesn't have universally relatable records, though. 🙄🤣
