Nice to hear someone give credit to Knopfler for a change
Win!
FOR REAL!!!!!!!
I can guarantee that here in Europe he’s not overlooked at all. Always up there in every ranking.
Knopfler is amazing. Listening to his music, you'd swear he was born and raised in Nashville.
I know! He's so underrated.
Anybody that mentions Mark Knopfler goes up in my book
Amazing musician
On every street!
@@RiddlesInStone Knopfler and Beck are both amazing guitarists and similar in the regard that they didn't use a pick. So hard to replicate their sound. I agree with Jovi though...Beck was the best and sorely under recognized.
Sultans of Swing 🤘
@@Spirit.Man551 Single Handed Sailor
Great answer. Mentioned Beck, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Prince and Knopfler. Only one he missed that is often on these "best guitarist lists" is Clapton.
No, a laundry list was left out...
And Blackmore.
Smartest thing I’ve ever heard him say.
You’re not smart
A lot of great ones, but nobody makes it look effortless than Knopfler
Clapton
Alvin Lee should also get an honorable mention
Sambora is a fine musician.
Knopfler, Brian May, Clapton my favorites.
It ain't a competition.
0:27 Exactly. He saw the magic...
Someone should mention Jerry Garcia, the musicians' musician.
Hendrix and VH are two of the most inspirational/influential great technical rock guitarists. Though it's tricky to say "The Greatest Of All Time". Beck could do things others couldn't but could he compose and play things that a Johnny Marr came up with and vice versa? Then there is Segovia :-0
if Jeff beck better than Randy Rhoads?
@@backtoshallabal6662 Yes
Chet Atkins
@@TheAgentAssassin he shaped how the Everlys guitars sounded!
Correct. Thank you. It's no disrespect to the great Jeff Beck to put him a rung below EVH and Jimi. And on the Johny Marr test EVH and Jimi passed that one.
Michael Schenker
Listen to the last lick Jeff Plays on that “Blaze of Glory song”. Might be one of the craziest licks of all times . If you didn’t know the difference you would swear it’s a female vocalist . Just listen to it . Jeff was not from earth .
Agreed…amazing what Jeff did.
I not a Jeff beck listenner, but what he dis in young guns, it is gold.
Hank Marvin and Gary Richrath. I can't understand why they are so underrated. Glenn Campbell was great too.
Roy Clark and many others down Nashville way.
agree...If he saw Jeff Beck in the same room, how can you not give that answer?
Knopfler should be higher in every list, prince too. They just avoided the limelight, "success is great, fame not so much" knopfler once said.✌️
Gary Moore is up there
Good for Bon Jovi!
Robert Fripp is my fave. Still, that was a wonderful answer he gave
Eddie Van Halen said the greatest Guitar Player ever was
Roy Clark.
maybe acoustic. He was very good for sure
Beck was more of a Magician. He was on another level
I suspect it's a classical guitarist somewhere, certainly not a rock, blues or country player as great as they can be.
Or a jazz guitarist
PACO DE LUCÍA, of course!!!!!!!
Jon knows what he is talkin about.
Yingwie Malmsteen
Everyone has a top 10!
It's impossible to answer that question. I'd say Stevie Ray Vaughn, Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Beck, Hendrix, Knopfler, Eddie, Prince and probably twenty others that could arguably be the best ever.
Agree.
How would he know?
John McLaughlin
Completely agree. Shakti, Mahavishnu, the Trio... He has it all - originality, technique, passion....
Yea agree.
Hear Jimi Hendrix on\in Royal Albert Hall (Red House) you may change your Mind
Bon Jovi is legit, he took a breath, mentioned the greats, then included Mark Knopfler.
The Sulton of Swing King.
Respect to Bon Jovi for mentioning Mark Knopfler.
An impossible question. So many legends. Some gone, some still around
Exacty...Stevie Ray Vaughan needs a mention here.
I still listen to the Young Guns II soundtrack all the time! One of my all time favorites. Billy Get Your Guns!!!
In a blaaaze of gloory
What about Richie.. & Carlos Santana
Mark Knophler é genial mesmo
Stevie Ray Vaughan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If you're being put on the spot, Jeff Beck is probably the best answer, hands down.
Jeff Beck doesn't sing. That's the first thing that makes you a musician.
@@johnwattdotca not singing. Songwriting.
Page was a songwriter.
So was Tony Iommi, Dave Mustaine.
That's how they've put out such big catalogues
All great players are unique, it's all down to your personal taste, but they're all masters of their own sound.
No it is not, the best is the best.
@@JoFuSoA 😂😅
Correct! Unless there is really strict parameters or guidelines, there is no best, impossible! there is only favourites.
Exactly. It's all subjective.
Yep. We'll said.
What a hugely respectful response to a question that can't be answered. Add to this Young Guns was over 30 years ago the moment clearly resonated with him.
Such a pity that he would not mention one of the best: Richie Sambora!
But he’s not one of the very best though
@@barry1369 You're wrong.
@@jjbast he’s good but he’s not one the greatest of all time
Alice Cooper said 'Samboras the best of all"
So what?
Its just opinions
He’s not though. Not even a remote possibility.
I agree with him, Beck did things and created otherwordly sounds that cannot be outdone.
As far as the greatest SONGWRITING guitarist, it's Jimmy Page, no question. Not only was he a great player, he also constructed masterpieces of music
Page was a visionary, a great songwriter as you said, great arranger and producer,, but in my opinion, a “really good” guitar player. He was unique and recognizable, and played some now classic riffs, but technically far behind some of his peers, Beck amongst them.
You are absolutely correct NOBODY made Rock songs the way page did !!
jeff beck made a one note sustain solo sound cool and interesting. absolute genius
@@melodymakermark He didnt just play "some classic riffs." He played MORE iconic riffs than any other player you can name, while also playing a number of iconic solos.
absolutely, Page well said
Tony Iommi... with two fingertips missing.
Django played with two fingers. 😁
Certainly the most important guitarist of all time.
Within the genre, yes. Overall, as a guitar player... not in a top 10 list of all time anywhere.
@@bobabooey4537 you OBVIOUSLY CANT PLAY GUITAR.
@@csnide6702 I can play guitar, definitely in the top 10 all time.
Jeff Beck was a legend.
Brian May, Mark Knopfler, Angus Young, Edward Van Halen.
Beck was king of the tremolo in my opinion. The way he used it was incredible.
Even as far back as 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' in the mid 70s he floored everyone with his use of tremolo
Even better than Adrian Belew
It is vibrato not tremolo
@@stratmagic6893 Fender calls it 'Tremolo ' and so do most guitarists
@TheHumbuckerboy but it isn't tremolo. They were wrong. Vibrato is a change in pitch and tremolo is a change in volume .
All thanks for acknowledging the brilliance that is Prince!
Jimmy Page, George Lynch, Jamie West Oram, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson are on the top of my list.
Wow! Your a Fixx fan? Cool, very cool.
I agree with Jon they all deferent players but I would put both Jeff Beck and Eddie as #1....they both deserve to share first place. And Hendrix #2 for me.
Its disrespect not to mention Richie Sambora. RS made Bon Jovi that it is. He's one of the best guitarist of the world. Jon should mention that because he made jon tha rockstar that he is. Ungrateful
Richie really is a great guitar player....Jon knows that, everyone knows that. And he's definitely one of the top 100 guitar players of all time, but Richie isn't a TOP 3 candidate.... and Richie knows that too!
@@kalterkakaozumfruhstuck1515 Brayn May was elected "best guitarist" of the world. His isnt one of the most gifted, but they give him thw award anyway. I think RS is one of the top 5. Jon at least could mencion that. He is a rockstar, for many things one of them is Richie Sambora. No question about it.
Just because he’s was in the band doesn’t make him one of the greatest that ever played. Get a grip.
I can’t recall Jeff Beck really having a strong songwriting game, which might be why he rates lower for me as a total artist than Hendrix. But truth be told, as a guitar player I dig the many facets of playing we got from Beck’s long career more than the few we were allowed with Hendrix.
Prince was all around better musician/performer/entertainer than all those JBJ mentioned
Agree 100% and I grew up a Zeppelin and Rush fan, nobody could touch Beck's playing.
I was fortunate to see Jeff Beck 15 times, including his last tour last year with Johnny Depp. He was my all time favorite guitarist as well as musician. I am still in disbelief he has died, it hurts me as much as when my Mom died. #RIPJeffBeck #GOATGuitarist #ICON
Edit: Actually saw him 15 times.
💜
14 times? Amazing. To say you liked him is an understatement. Lol. But remember Hendrix passed away very young at 27 so can you imagine how good he would have been at 37?
@@guitarsrcool4922 I had to edit my post. Saw him 15 times.
4times.
SRV Beck '89 Dayton was by far my all time best show.
Saw Stevie 6 times total.
RIP Mr. Beck and Stevie Ray......
@@F1Slunk Saw SRV 10×. First time I saw him, met him, & got him to autograph a flyer from the venue. Last time I saw him was the 1st of 2 shows he did with Eric Clapton at Alpine Valley.
Great answer. Jeff Beck is amazing on guitar.
Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa and Steve Vai's favorite:
Allan Holdsworth, the Big Boss!
If he was more thoughtful, he should’ve said, Richie Sambora as a nice gesture. Guess he couldn’t throw him a bone.
I think Jon is still bitter that Richie walked away
Ahí notaste el gran ego de jon jon nunca va a reconocer que el éxito de bon jovi fue por richie sambora no por ningún otro
He wouldn’t be truthful then. Sambora can’t be considered with those that Jon mentioned.
Mark knopfler one of the greatest
Although not my personal favorite, I must admit that Jeff Beck concentrated all those elements that make a musician come close to being a "greatest of all time".
Beck, Hendrix, Gilmour and Knopfler is my Mt. Rushmore
Jon speaks the truth. RIP Jeff Beck
A lot of guilty artists say Roy Clark was the best guitarist. I know Van Halen and Jimmie Hendrix mention Roy Clark.
Yes he was
Chet Atkins too. He was amazing
Happy to see someone recognize Roy's talent. Another one I would put along side him is Glen Campbell
Glen Campbell was said to have given lessons to Van Halen.
Ye some big names, Their more trail blazers & unique in what they introduced to modern rock guitar playing. Let's not forget Richie Blackmore & Steve Via as well..
That is correct. Jeff Beck is the GOAT.
Terry Kath (Chicago) was one of the absolute best.
Interviewer to hendrix: how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world. Hendrix response "I dont know you have to ask Terry Kath"
When humanity finally gets past trying to choose the “Best” guitar player of all time, we’ll be ready for world peace
LOL In the meantime you can start by going vegan.
Agreed, I have said it numerous times, " "GOATS" are for farms."
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Blackmore always gets overlooked
Blackmore, Gallagher, Steve hackett, Alex lifeson
Eddie Van Halen, Roy Clark, Randy Scruggs.
Nice insider opinion by JBJ. Beck is a surprise top pick, wouldn't be mine. But Jon lived that life, knows the personalities...think I'll trust his words here, this time.
No Pete Townsend love?Did Two amazing rock operas and had a decent solo career.
Pete rocks. Hugely seminal player. Total powerhouse early on too.
That young guns album was magnificent.
BB. King once said Eric Clapton is the greatest living guitarist 🎸.... That can be broken down several ways..... However, what a lovely compliment coming from him back then
he couldnt carry stevie ray vaughn's guitar case. clapton is a good player. but no comparison to srv. just my opinion. lets not forget knopfler, beach, marino, just to name a few.
Clapton, just don’t see it. I’d take any of those Jon mentioned over him.
Shawn Lane is the best ever.
Terry Kath?
Young Guns II score was killer.
I agree Jeff Beck,
Hendrix
Prince ???? Wtf. He is not even in top 1000
Jimmy Page
@@godbyone nor should he be
LOL he's a great player but most of all he's a genius overall artist. If you're talking guitar only Prince is not in the top 50@@godbyone
0:53 He used a word that doesn't exist, but he isn't the first person to say "intrical" when he meant "integral".
Hendrix, Page, Zappa, Beck, Prince, Eddie, knopfler, Roy Clark, Nugent and then everybody else.
you must not listen to a lot of guitar of this is your list LOL
Funny, when Beck was asked what he thought about Jimi after hearing him play, he said he thought about quitting the guitar.
BB King, Slash, Richie Sambora, Keith Urban definitely
Prince, John Frusciante and Tommy Emmanuel the greatest
finally someone acknowledging the greatness of knopfler
Chet Atkins = GOAT
Apples and oranges. I not think maybe will agree that Chet is the greatest rock n roll guitarist, which i believe is what they meant. Not goons see Chet on a list above Hendrix.
or Glenn Campbell
@@paulvon2378 yea Roy Clark was super good too.
So many amazing guitarists.
The correct answer is actually Guthrie Govan (your own guitairst, Richie, was incredible too in his pomp!!).
Buckethead, Slash, Marty Freidman, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani too.
SRV is my goat,a true rock rhythm and blues virtuoso WITH vocals!!!
SRV copied JH note for note!!
@@joesmith6524Not even close. He played a couple of Jimi’s songs note for note but their blues styles were not on the same track.
I wholeheartedly agree. Jeff Beck was the GOAT in my humble opinion.
Roy Buchanan made great albums.
Ana Vidovic , Paco de Lucia, Al Dimeola, George Bensen…
For me is Iommi or Gilmour but as with everything, it is personal choice!
Hendrix, Clapton, B.B. King, Allman, Santana, Townsend and Neil Young are some of my favorites.
Jerry Garcia too
Neil ❤
SRV?
Leaving out jimmy page is disturbing considering he smokes most on that list.
...wow...he nailed it...with no hesitation...thank...love...
Ritchie blackmore, wasnt a huge fan of jeff beck but love his guitar lol haha plays killer
Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best guitarist/performer we are ever likely to see!👍😎✌🗽
Im a big SRV fan too and think he’s one of the all time greats but I think choosing THE GOAT is really impossible and ultimately will just reflects people’s biases and their emotions make the decisions for them. SRV is definitely on my personal short list of best players but that’s just my opinion.
@@slashtrio Same here, just another opinion. I said guitarist/performer which for me is true. If you put just the guitar skills up for competition, I'd still pick Stevie, but I'd have to see the top players side by side to really make an informed decision. Someone should do that, put together 10, or 20 of the top guitarists best performances in a vlog. 👍😎✌🗽
Also a big Stevie ray vaughan Fan one the best ever lived 🙂👍👍
What about another Jeff. I mean Jeff Healey 🙂👍👍 played together with SRV result..you are in guitar heaven 😊
Even in a 1 minute conversation about the best guitarist of all time: if David Gilmour's name is not mentioned then it is a conversation NOT worth having.
Brian May, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Steve Howe for me.
Mark Knopfler for me. Its all subjective and there really is no such thing tbh.
