    I bought my 500 from a guy while standing in the ticket line at a gun show. Totally unplanned. I went home after a few hours and thought, "What in the world did I just buy today?" I still have it, but after about shooting five rounds, I've had enough of it. I do enjoy the rare times I show it to some of my friends and relatives and seeing their reaction to such a large revolver.

      They are super cool to look at. Not very pleasant to shoot. I completely understand. Thanks for watching

    The 460 has always made the most sense to me with that versatility of the 454 casull….

      I have never personally owned one. It sounds like a good round on paper. Do you have one?

      @ I’m still waiting for Ruger to make a 460, would Ruger collaborate with a S&W caliber? I like the idea of a black hawk 460, even a convertible would be cool, preferably a talo Ruger with that double action, perfect for brown bear country

      @DR676767 now that would be cool

    “The most powerful handgun”. So true. A .44 w hollow points is like a hand-held cannon. Dig S&W’s 629. My dad had one.

    I've never shot a S&W 500 with a barrel that short, got to be one heck of a noisemaker with that muzzle brake!

    When it comes to power factor 500 wins hands down
    But, when it comes to versatility the 44 magnum wins because
    It can shoot not just the magnum (obviously) but it can also accommodate the 44 special and even the old 44 Russian
    500 magnum is what most people shoot, yes they did try releasing a 500 special but it didn’t really check on.

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому +2

      I actually was not aware you could shoot 44 Russian out of the 44 mag. Very interesting. Thank you

      Yeah, if I lived in a cabin in Montana I’d take the 500 (more powerful). If I lived in a suburb in Texas, I’d take the 629 (more practical).

    I have a classic hunter dash 2 just like yours. It’s my fav revolver in my collection. Mine has the rubber grips but I’m digging them target grips on it. I may have to find me a set of them now.

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому

      Yeah mine came with rubber grips. I hunted down the older target grips for an N frame. Try ebay. Thanks for watching. Never get rid of that gun

    The S&W 629 may not have the frame size of the 500, but it's still one big, beefy beast; a size up from the 686.

    Would love to own a X frame SW myself. The 500 looks so badass, but the 5" SW 460V gotta be the better choice out of the two X frames. 3 caliber options and the 5" isnt as snubby as the 4" 500 with better long distance performance and better accuracy. Does anyone here recommend it?

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому +1

      I have never owned a 460 but the 3 caliber option seems to be cool

    I carry both for everyday human protection in my city. I've noticed that long term, you don't really need ear protection for 44 mag.
    With 500 mag it kinda screws with your health, even when using it in emergency xutuations against humans.

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому

      Lol. Where do you live????? Lol

      San antonio.
      I carry the 300 grain hornadys for my edc 44 mag loads.
      If u have a chance, check out the 340 grain hardcast from Buffalo bore that everyone is so afraid of. I found them far more violent and extreme than any 500mag loads so far. Again, I think the 500 is more noise than anything. I've not found it to be more powerful or diverse as the 44. I have several 460sw, 454cas as well. Ive been heavily involved in the gun world since the 80s. In my lifetime, that 340grain 44 from buff bore remains to be the most extreme thing I've ever shot from a handgun or rifle.
      Thank you for promoting revolvers and 1911s.
      Merry Xmas

    I look at the S&W 500 the way Ross Seyfried summarized his review of the Linebaugh 475 and 500 maximums a decade before the S&W came out. Interesting experiment but virtually zero practical application. The standard 475 and 500 had easily take every animal on earth. The extra size , recoil, noise and smoke doesn’t impress the animal.

    LOL mr Benton... at first I could see no reason for an apples to oranges comparison like this but you delivered... in.....my.... opinion as someone who has shot mostly handguns for 50+ years.... Something like the 500 is just not something I need or want... disclaimer being grizzly country lol Sooo... being a 50 times world champion plinker and not really a hunter... Accuracy/history/unique are the reasons I buy/collect handguns. By accuracy I mean like way less than 2" groups from sandbags at 25 yards from a rest. most historical guns won't do that but some will like my 1936 outdoorsman. Unique ones rarely have that kind of accuracy. soo the accurate ones? I will shoot at a 2 liter soda at 100 yards... probly hit it too before the gun is empty ... not so much the others. these are all my handloads. Most of my guns are between 'soft kicking' and ''flinch after 30 rounds' and can be held fairly easily. To me......the 44 mag is the ultimate practical caliber. Love my .357's and 45 acp etc guns but for practical big power? the 44 mag is it. And in the 44 mag guns.... the 629 is the winner. The 29 for me was a tad weak. gorgeous gun tho... my 629 is like yours polished stainless (would prefer nickel or blue but) Anyway... the 'N' frame and 44 mage are peanut butter and jelly.... the ultimate Goldilocks gun... Just right.

    • @TerryBenton
      @TerryBenton  Місяць тому +1

      I completely agree. The 629 is the ultimate gun in the ultimate caliber. It would be hard to find someone who ons one to disagree.

      @@TerryBenton Exactly.... I have the Dan Wesson 44 mag.. close to the size of an X frame... while I love that gun and even had a custom 5" barrel made for it? it is bulky. I have owned 4? Ruger RH and the first of em were pretty good but later quality control sucks and they are bulky and not that good looking... I like the single action 44 mags by various people...but single action is not what we are talking about.. that being said? a Ruger SBH in the field is not a bad choice.. prefer the smallish Freedom arms one Love the Anaconda but again......
