If you are using the jiggle deformer it could be that. Otherwise there may be something going on in your vertex map or displacement deformer. Check those and let me know if you find anything odd. Cheers!
I didn't cover it in this video because my setup was fairly simple. I just used the vertex map to blend between two materials. I will try to include that on videos moving forward. Cheers!

Really interesting, on mine sometimes the trail leaves a kind of rippling effect. Is that because of the underlying geometry of the plane?

maybe a collision deformer so that the sphere isn't sinking in to the plane
