As someone with a shaved head, I've found a cap to be essential for sweat management, warmth, sun protection (stripes on head otherwise) and protection from bees that get trapped in my helmet. The little brim gives some sun protection (not a sunglass guy), as well.

As an teen in the early 80s, completing ignorant of the racing scene but vaguely aware that cycling was somehow Euro-cool, I used to wear a checkerboard Peugeot cap while riding in south Florida. Just what a gangly, glasses-wearing nerd in a nearly bike-free town needed to perfect his image. :-P

I wear them under my helmet all the time when cycling and I've accumulated a bit of a collection. My only problem is some cycling caps are non adjustable one size fits all and they squeeze my head a bit tight. Fortunately, some brands have an L/XL size and your cap fixes that issue by being adjustable.

I wear cycling caps mainly in the warmer months. One reason, to keep the sweat off my face and glasses like you mentioned. Second reason, protection from critters like wasps and bees that somehow find their way through the vents on my helmet. Nothing is worse than a P O'd wasp/ hornet who gets trapped in your helmet while flying down a long descent. Believe me, I have first hand knowledge....😢

Wool caps are where it's at for me. You can get em thin for warmer weather or thick for winter with ear coverage. As far as I'm concerned, Merino wool is the best material for cycling. You don't even need to wash it every use! It's not necessarily thick and hot either. I have thin wool shirts than are plenty comfortable and breathable on hot days.
I look for Japanese or US made stuff. US merino wool is the best I've found and often it lasts for many years. I've got a large head, so I need to be very particular about finding larger sizes. Regular cotton caps fit too tight like lots of cycling clothes. They'll only work when my hair is cut short and thin.

As you will probably discover within the next 6 months Russ, a cycling cap will help keep your head cool in hot, sunny conditions. A bandana works well too. They stay wet under your helmet and provide constant evaporative cooling and prevent the sensation of your head being branded with lines from the sun shining through the gaps in your helmet. Not sure how well nylon will provide these functions though.

But overall, the resurgence of SIMPLE, reliable, AFFORDABLE and practical bike junk is pretty refreshing. IF one can possibly ignore marketing BS and learn to think practically, in ones best interest.
Being a professional bike mechanic with 50 years wrenching, riding and racing experience , a 4wd fabricator, retired machinist and high reliability mechanical inspector, I can easily refute plenty of claims made here.
I ignore practically ALL marketing BS.
Nobodys fooling me. Having built aircraft, spacecraft and medical devices, I can confidently claim bicycles ought to be simple, reliable transportation. The Wright Bros were bicycle enthusiast/ mechanics. I believe thats all the vast majority of consumers truly NEED and very few riders actually race.

As it stands, modern bike 'technology' IS my job security.

So, ya .mid 80s, a reverse Kangol or sort of french legion wool beret were the peak of fashion. Think Ferris Buehler, Jim Kerr, Capt. Sensible. However,, back then because helmets weren't worn by pros quite yet, wool winter caps with ear covers were worn in every spring classic. Bicycle Couriers in cold cities frequently wore these, or Kangols, or paid extra premiums for fleece lined racing hats. Before Gore started making synthetic, I always went for black wool Santini short bills

Currently wearing one right now. They're great for sweat absorption, lessening the need to constantly clean the helmet inner (you will still need to clean it though) and it keeps your hair away from your face. Also, not all helmets have a visor, so they serve their purpose in sun protection.

My head is on the bigger side and almost all cycling caps are "one size fits all", which, in practice, means they are all way too small. So my choice is very limited. A cycling cap under a helmet is useful in both winter and summer. Plus, not unimportant, it adds a bit of old-school style to your kit.

As a fellow pumpkin-headed rider... even if any trad style cycling caps fit me; the small peak accentuates the size and shape skull.
I wear thin material baseball caps when I want proper eye-shade. Buffs rolled into basic headbands for the forehead when it's sweaty season.... or alternately a wicking material kinda style I as an Aussie call a "frill neck" (after a native lizard). which has a legionnaire style flap at the back.

I never wore them because 1) the brim distracted me when down and 2) I didn't want to look like a 'cyclist' especially in rural areas. I wore a low profile baseball cap on bike tours. Why did I change? I like being able to flip the brim up and down and realized that the nice folk in Hyannis, NE and similar towns down care about my cap styles at all. Plus it works great for absorbing sweat and washes better than most baseball caps.

    Tks for sharing this video
Looks like there are lots of us who continue the tradition! 👍🏼
I wear my cycling cap under my leather "hairnet" helmet to protect the leather from taking the brunt of my sweat. So i like cotton for that reason.
Why do i wear a "hairnet" helmet and when? I wear it when i use my brommie on cycle paths instead of the road (it's when i would use my proper main MIPS helmet). I'd use the leather "hairnet" when i head to meetings and meals where space is limited for a big helmet. The hairnet helmet and cap can be folded and tucked into some tiny crevice in the folded brommie under a table.
The good thing about the cycling cap is the ability to flick the peak upwards, giving better vertical view especially at night. And down when the sun is glaring at an engle.
When I'm riding on the road most of the time, it'll be on the full-sized bike and my hi-viz T-shirt and hi-viz helmet. So that I'm seen in high intense raging traffic. And should there be an accident, I don't want the driver to get away by saying to the judge that he didn't see me. There's no way he can get a mile close to that excuse!
Tks for the excellent video and footages, Russ!

For the real winter, the German army winter cap is basically a cycling cap, but it's thick and has those flaps that cover your ears and the back of your head down to your neck. Also they're actually available (or at least were made) in various sizes with one centimeter intervals, none of that "one size fits medium" thing. A workmate claimed that I was giving mixed signals with a camo cap and a hi-viz helmet, but hey, even stealth bombers have transponders.

On Nelson Veils cap - plausible explanation is that he may have been a member of famous NYC Guardian Angels (I tried to confirm but couldn't find any source, maybe you could?). Red beret like that is their symbol/uniform. Suggestion for merch' that I never see actively used in cycling but is of great help in hot places (and warm version in cold): headband. In mid-2000s I won one intended for runners by winning a TDF online prediction game. It immediately became a must for me and I got one for cold times too. Why cyclist don't use this simple, light, absorbing piece is beyond me but, I too never thought of it 'till I got one!

I started riding and racing when the racing world transitioned between either wearing no helmet, or wearing a hair net to modern plastic helmet designs. I know of one guy who quit because he refused to wear a helmet while racing which had been recently required. I remember reading about the European pros complaining too. Sean Kelly says he hates riding with a helmet.
I currently wear a cap I made with no brim on it to wear under my helmet to absorb sweat. It works better than a traditional cycling cap in my opinion. It also works brilliantly as an indoor fitness cap when I want to keep sweat from dripping into my eyes, but find I either don't need a brim to protect me from light, and/or a brim obstructs my view.

Love the history lesson! I've always worn a cycling cap...usually not cotton. Besides your great caps, obviously other known brands (like Walz) make lots of advertisement-free options. Personally, if my local bike shop has caps I'm always especially stoked to don them. Off the bike, it's a good look, right? Peace!

Where one a year round, keeps the elements off, then again I don't use a helmet. Recently treated myself to the Cinelli 75 anniversary cap, it's waterproof too !!
Aren't they space cadet berets in quicksilver

I usually have a "da brim" strapped to my helmet for some sun protection. It works great on sunny days on rides in areas that don't have any trees for shade and you need to make a maximum amount of shade. Since leaving the plains and riding in gravel forests, I don't need such a substantial shade making device and have been wanting to get a cycling cap to see if it would keep the sun out of my eyes. You had me when you said "brim slightly larger than" because I'll squint before I wear a trucker cap.

You publicly admit to wearing a Da Brim, yet you will squint before wearing a trucker cap? 🤔
Chrome makes a great 5 panel "Cycling" hat that has a visor actually large enough to block out the sun.
Buy that one after you buy the PartyPace cap.
      Best wishes.
(My Da Brim classic visor with front stabilizer is on the way :)

@@stevenr5149 I look incredibly stupid in a trucker hat. Da brims are rare enough that despite looking incredibly silly, people see the practicality of it. My serious racing friends give me crap about my da brim though.
You'll like da brim. I used to live in Texas and would ride into brutal headwinds and it always stayed put. It's just too much shade on cloudy days along tree lined gravel roads.
I did buy Russ's cap, and I'm looking up that other one you suggest right now.

Does the Da Brim protect your scalp from the sun? Just had a Basal-cell Carcinoma removed from the top of my head and I think the air vents in helmets are a problem.

I wear them in warm months to prevent sunburns through the helmet vents and in the cold months to stay warm.

So who knew a move to Europe would prompt Russ to wax nostalgic about roadie racing gear, love it. And for sure I fondly recall that look, the winners on the podiums in their caps like motor sports stars in their baseball caps. And I was pleased to see in the early '80s the trend among young women to carry around cycling water bottles for actual hydration. That led to an entire marketplace for personal bottles, but it seems to me that it started with a cycling product and that was cool.

Being able to wear the cycling cap to the left or right side is an advantage cycling caps have over the visors built into some helmets.

I never ride without a proper hat. The inconsistent sizing is an issue but flat brims are for something that is not cycling. I appreciate the brim for the mtb too. I always remove the visor.

When I was in the military, I always thought it was stupid to wear a cap under your helmet. Same goes with a cycling cap. I don't wear a cycling cap because I wear a cycling helmet and it seems kind of stupid to wear one under a helmet. As for bees or other insects that can get trapped in my helmet, I used to wear a hairnet stretched over my helmet, but now I wear a fluorescent green rain cover over my helmet. It keeps the bugs out and also helps with being seen by cars and, as an added plus, it beaks the wind in the winter so my head doesn't get cold.

I hate to be picky, but the Kevin Bacon movie Quicksilver was set in San Francisco, not New York. When Bacon's character goes back to the stock exchange his pass says "PSE" on it for Pacific Stock Exchange (it's a block off Sutter Street).

My forehead sweats so much that a casquette under the helmet is a must. The hat soaks up the sweat and when it gets really hot the sweat drips off of the bill, not on to my face. Kudos for knowing who Nelson Vails is.
