5:23 hold up! Is that Vince Vaughn on the left?!😱
Is it? !
Could be! He was on the verge of stardom at that point.
@@DianeJennings IT WAS HIM!!!🤯 just confirmed it on Google
That's a Trip, I never noticed that before and I have seen the music video a bunch of times. probably cause He's on screen for 4 seconds and has a mustache.
That doesnt look anything like him to me.@@mattheweudy2396
Smashing Pumpkins were my Mom's favorite band (tied with Green Day) and they were absolutely a formative band for me and my pre-adolescence. At the time of this song, they were wrapped in with a bunch of other post-grunge bands. But this album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) was an absolute MONSTER and remains arguably the defining album of their career. I got to take my Mom to see SP in concert a few years before she passed (as well as Green Day) and she says it was one of the greatest musical moments of her whole life. So yeah, I have a lot of emotions tied up in this band and seeing you enjoy it makes my heart happy!
Omg your mom was such a cool lady! I can imagine this being quite evocative for you 💕
@@DianeJenningsgreat band 😊
W Mom
Fun fact: this music video is referenced in the music video for Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia
Awee and there’s a Smashing Pumpkin and Green Day concert coming up 💯 I’m going to it in September
The car in the video was a 1972 Dodge Charger. It was a muscle car, with a huge engine and a lot of power. It probably wasn't worth a lot in 1979 (when the video was set), but would have been collectible in 1995. A 1972 Charger in good condition would be worth a lot today. Kids really loved the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s.
Other musical groups from Chicago:
Styx
The Chi-Lites
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
The Buckinghams
Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan)
Chicago (of course!)
Very cool car! Thanks!
In '79 I turned sixteen in January, was a junior in H.S. going into my senior year come fall, and drove around in a '72 Dodge Charger quite often.
Billy Corgan went to my high school (about 15 years before I did). Very proud of that. 😁 I remember looking up his yearbook pictures in the school library with my friends and we all were floored that he had hair back then! I love this song. The whole album makes me really nostalgic, and this is my favorite song from it.
That's a cool story. To be fair, he had hair in the videos off Siamese Dream just 2 years before this. It was quite a shock to see him when these videos came out.
Nice.
Diane: “I think it will be emo!” Plays video: It’s never emo
Accurate 😂
Billy is a FANTASTIC musician who hardly ever 'struts his stuff' so to speak...
for decades...students in broadcasting school were taught the Illinois accent, so it's no wonder that it is a perception of typical overseas!!!
I'm a 90's kid, and this is seriously one of my favorite bands of all time!!! Kudos to Diane for having good taste!!!
Yeah I think I actually missed a day of work after hearing this album the first time.
Oh cool! I’m glad you approve ☺️
"Cherub Rock" is a deadly song, its the one that hooked me in... Give it a go!!
The fuzz on the guitars is perfection.
Still my favourite Smashing Pumpkins song of all time.
Fun fact: Darcy is the old lady with the green face cream, Jimmy is a cop and James is the gas station employee.
More Pumpkins please! i'd recommend the video for "Today" by the Smashing Pumpkins next.
Today is about someone who's going to off himself.
@@THX..1138 Yup. I still have the Smashing Pumpkins Video Collection on DVD. There's a lot of great behind the scenes footage.
This is a cover..
@@nigelchaos Yeah Corgan's fascinating guy. He admitted a few years ago Today and Disarm were written on the same day presumably after seeing his estranged parents. Disarm is about child abuse he suffered and Today was about him thinking about doing himself in. Paradoxically the tone of Today is up beat and Disarm is ballad to his abusers sang without a hint of anger.
If you find yourself diving into Pumpkinland, please make sure you experience Siamese Dream (their 2nd album) and their following double album is this one: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Both albums are always in the conversation as two of the best albums to come out of the 90s. Siamese Dream doesnt have any misses.
Smashing Pumpkins Played a lot on MTV even won a lot of Video Music Awards in the 90s. They Also won a Grammy Award and American Music Award.
In 1979, most of Chicago 7-11’s and White Hen Pantry’s had rules posted limiting the number of kids under 12 to coming into the store more than 3 at a time.
This might have added to the feeling of waiting at that age because if you were anywhere near 12 you were often forced to wait even if you were actually 12.
Yeah really... ua-cam.com/video/UoM7CEB49C8/v-deo.html
The Smashing Pumpkins are touring Europe this summer. I got tickets to the NOS Alive festival in Lisbon, where they'll be playing. They also have a stop in Dublin in June.
Trying listening to Smashing Pumpkins songs. Zero, Disarm, Today, Tonight Tonight, Ava Adore, Perfect.
Can't forget mayonnaise!!
seconded!
zero's my fave by them
@@painetdldy Such a good song
I was in university when this came out, and you better believe it's on the soundtrack of my life! My heart still leaps when the intro comes over the radio....
Another great choice for a reaction video! Yes, the song was in the 90's, but the 1979 vibe of the video brings back tons of great memories. (I was eleven in 1979) I also love how you just seem to purely enjoy these videos! Best wishes!
Cool, thanks!
Disarm, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Tonight, Tonight, Zero, The End is the Beginning is the End, Cherub Rock, Eye, Ava Adore... there are so many great songs to experience.
I’d like to hear more, I liked this song a lot more now than when I was younger. I used to find their mellow chaos feel unsettling as a kid.
The Pumpkins were at the Top of the Music Scene during the 90`s. Both Albums: Siamese Dream & Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness are absolute Masterpieces!
College memories unlocked. Good/bad...I don't even recall 😜 Cheers Diane! 💚
The best kind of memories 🤣
I’m from Springfield Illinois and always loved Smashing Pumpkins because of the sound and that they were from my home state
This easily goes into my all time top 10 favorite songs. I saw them in 1994 Lollapalooza in Miami. They were the headliners with the Beastie Boys. Great show.
I was at the last show the night before the tragedy. July 10 1996 was my first show. Crazy times. Great show though.
For those of use who finished school around the end of the '70s, this video is SO nostalgic. We all knew delinquents like this!
This video is relatable to me because I was that age in 1979.
We weren't destructive, but my friends and I would pile into somebody's car and drive around aimlessly looking for fun.
Great times.
Alright another Awesome Band from the 1990's. I love a lot of the music from the 1990's.
My heart is both full of joy and sorrow that you only just now listened to this song and getting Smashing Pumpkins some attention in general....wonderful group.
Haven't seen/heard this in decades. Love the Punkins.. Thanks Dianne
SP are one of my all time fave bands in my teens, absolutely love this song, this whole albumn is amazing!
The Smashing Pumpkins 1979 makes Me think of the tv show that 70s show.
Courtney Love's Band Hole has some good songs too. It has that alternative rock grunge sound to it like Her husband Kurt Cobains Band Nirvana. Try listening to Hole Band songs Celebrity Skin, Doll Parts, Violet, Malibu
I second that
That was my childhood... I graduated in 80. I was at many keg parties like that... Cruising around, partying, chasing girls, man those were the days.
We were already married with a grade school child when this group came out with their first hit album. Despite that, me and my wife actually liked this group. Their album was sort of bipolar, gentle and melodic like the song 1979, then switching to some screaming fast beat song, all the way through the album. While we appreciated all their songs, 1979 remained our favorite.
I was waiting for you to react to this one. There are plenty more like this to react to.
The video and song is about your youth when you just want to be naughty and be free and do what you want
Disarm is one of the best and original songs you'll hear. The video is very artistically appealing as well.
I can't believe it. I've thought since the 90s that the drummer died of a heroin overdose. He's one of my favorite drummers, and I'm so glad he's alive!
Damn, flashback time. I never really watched this video before but have always liked the song. 1979 was the year half way through my sophomore year of High School I changed to a private school with dorms. I drove a '71 New Yorker to and from school every weekend. The Charger in this video reminds me of that land yacht. 5000 pound car with a massive engine. It would seat 8 if you were cozy. Looking down the hood while driving you would swear it was big enough to play tennis on.
Smashing Pumpkins had another hit with _Bullet With Butterfly Wings_ thanks to the tv show *Whale Wars* .
Good name!
The Smashing Pumpkins made a sequel to this. It's the music vid called "Perfect." Basically, the characters in 1979 but a bit older, leading different lives.
Also, Emo arose in the late 90s and early 2000s, bands that formed before then aren't Emo bands. Pumpkins is a 90s alternative band.
aggressive and wonderful: billy's voice. i love a good screamer
So glad you starting jamming out. Its class
I enjoyed learning about the band Smashing Pumpkins and the band members. Learned a lot today about the band I did not know with You on the learning journey.
If you’re going to Chicago, try to hit up Billy’s tea shop in Highland Park. Cool spot. Fun fact: Gerard and his brother decided to start a band after seeing the pumpkins on tour.
I met Billy Corgan and his band once. He was so nice and gave me his autograpgh.
I remember hearing Bullet With Butterfly Wings for the first time in 6th grade, and it was like one of those life changing moments you have growing up haha. I think a big part of it, on top of the music itself, was watching the music video and seeing a girl on bass and a Japanese guy in the band. As a Japanese American kid, it was a pretty big deal to see something like that, especially back then.
Yes, finally you got right the Alt Emo moniker, Irish Girl. I never really watched many MTV videos back in the day, so I always am fascinated by your take. Although these guys are often heard on the radio stations I listen to, I've never seen them live. The only thing I recall about the band back in the day, was that a young girl was trampled to death in the moshpit at the Point Theatre in Dublin. Better to be crowd averse and live to listen another day.
OMG that’s absolutely terrible! That didn’t come up in my search at all. I’m not very fond of crowds as you know.
I did not know Smashing Pumpkins is from Chicago. That's Pretty Cool since Your getting to visit Chicago.
Hi Diane! Happy Friday to you! I'm really not into "Smashing Pumpkins" or their music, but my youngest brother Rob is into this band and others that play the same genre of music. Their music sounds okay and it has a pretty good beat. It looks like you had enjoyed it pretty good! I always enjoy your reactions when you do these types of videos. Your reactions are priceless! Thanks for sharing these videos with us always! They always seem to make my day. 🥰 Have a fantastic weekend and be well Diane! 😎✌️❤️🌹
YESSSS to all the Pumpkin songs!
Even though I was born in 1979, this song was probably my 8th favorite on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
It's been that long... I remember getting my learner's permit at 14 ¾, you were supposed to get 3 months to learn to drive before you could get your license at 15 years old - which really didn't do much good, because you needed an adult with you to be able to drive until you reached 16 years-old only after turning 16 were you granted the right to drive by yourself.
Of course that was right around that time, and it's changed a bit since then.
Also back then, the legal drinking age was *only* 18!
That changed by the mid-80s though.
I thought it was so weird to hear a song about the late 70s in the mid 90s and get such a sense of nostalgia out of it.
And that it really resonated with me, sort of mirrored my experiences in 1979!
BTW, I wasn't the cool kid(s), but happened to sometimes get to hang out with them.
Good times... as the 90s SNL bit went.
Much as I like Diane Jennings,
I still won't fall for the ole, " 'You've one' TELEGRAM " scam, sorry.
Love what you’re doing with the channel! Not many check out Smashing Pumpkins and they are one of my favorite bands from growing up. Tonight Tonight was my prom song in high school. You should check out Bullet With Butterfly Wings, and Disarm too. Disarm was incredible for when it was written, and how it was written to incorporate orchestral strings put it in a class by itself
Fun fact: Billy Corgan and I went to the same junior high school in Glendale Heights, Illinois. He was two years ahead of me. I didn't know him. Maybe if i had, junior high wouldn't have sucked as hard as it did.
It's just the title of the song 1979 it's about having a flashback to the good days of 1979. Though, I've only learned about the 70s.
Love your videos
they formed in 1988 and their website is still active, they just released a new album, ATUM, I never heard of them,
Very cool!😊
Silversun Pickups, "Lazy Eye" is another one right in this groove.
Though it'd be super fun to go on a Pumpkins ride!
They were labeled Alternative, and it fits their eclectic sound: a little bit of this, a little of that and a lot of angst.
If it helps your case at all, the Van Halen album 1984 was actually released in 1984, so...✌️
I love The Pumpkins! One of the best parts about the band is how they could have a song like 1979 on the same album as Bullet With Butterfly Wings or Tales of a Scorched Earth. They're almost completely opposite vibes
An interesting thing about Smashing Pumkins is their music is very inspired by shoegaze music, and one of Billy’s biggest influences is Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine - from Dublin! My favorite song of theirs is called When You Sleep
1995, getting close to catching up 😆
My first teen year!
this is THE nostalgia song, no other song comes close to it
This is simply one of the coolest songs ever!
Smashing Pumpkins has lots of good songs. I have heard Smashing Pumpkins 1979. I am enjoying sharing in the music journey with You discovering the song and seeing Your reactions. Thanks for making Friday Happy and Joyful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@DianeJennings Always, Definitely a Happy song to dance too.
Another great job Diane!
Thank you! Cheers!
Happy Friday!! I really love this video. Have a great weekend.
Thank you! You too!
I’ve seen this band live twice in the last year. They are even more Magical live ⭐️
You should definitely check out some songs from their earlier album Siamese Dream. "Today" and "Disarm" are two good ones.
Ahh new music for me thank you Diane
I remember going to house parties like that. I miss stop n go!
I love this song. Takes me back to junior high school, setting in the baseball bleachers. just chillin with friends without a care in the world. Knowing the following year would be the start of high school and some of us would have different interests and responsibilities. Simple times.
Totally ✌🏻
Yet another song I know, but didn't know the name of. My carefree years were a little after 1979, but the hanging out with friends without a care in the world times were the best.
Absolutely! When we didn’t have to worry about paying tax, or for where we lived
still my favorite 1990s band! i have two sealed copies of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness album!
love these Kats this song is a vibe
Smashing Pumpkins is a great band, I have always enjoyed their music. Great reaction Diane!
Thanks!
Great reaction! You’re so entertaining and super pretty! Much love from New Jersey!
You can get a learners permit here in Perth at 15 years 9 months!
A good song. Timeless hit.
Reminds me of the partys my brother would have when our parents went away for the weekend 🤘
"I wanted to say to Jonathan and Valerie(the music video directors) I wanted it (the video) to be about suburban teenage angst, but the idealized version. Almost this sort of teenagehood that I never had, but I wished I had, which was sort of carefree and fun." --Billy Corgan
As Diane proceeds further on her musical journey she gains greater respect for her brother’s musical tastes.
😂
Good video 👍🏻
Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness…Arin Hansens favorite album of all time.
I love The Smashing pumpkins Music.
Meloncollie and the infinite sadness is an awesome double album. Many great songs on it or Siamese Dream another great album.
One video anachronism, there were no 2 liter plastic bottles in 1979-they were still using glass quart bottles.
And even if you think there was the plastic 2 liter bottles, they were two pieces because the hadn't yet made the five feet bottoms, so they hot glued a flat bottom adapter to them.
Definitely check out Mayonaise, or Soma from the Smashing Pumpkins when you get a chance :)
Also check out The British band The Animals. Their song House of the Rising Sun is one of those iconic 60's rock songs.
Drugs were a sore point in my adolescence, not that I ever partook of them, just involved in LSD manufacturing at school. The Headmaster went bananas when he discovered it, the Chemistry Club instantly disbanded, none of us could sit down without pain for 2 weeks. He kept the Police out of it as worried about the school's reputation. Parents told that we were caned for illegal behaviour and no police involvement needed as dealt with. Getting high on life enough for me. He knew about the Still but as got a free supply of alcohol allowed it to continue.
OMG Tony! Revelations about you 😆
This song was one of my Jam back in the day High School. Watching it again today I'm getting youth pastor vibe or cult leader from Billy Corgan don't know why still love the song a audio time machine
Do you think? Ha ha he does have those kind of eyes 👁️
This song is comforting 😌 ✨️
Enjoying Your dancing to the song it's making Me Happy wanting to dance too.
💃
@@DianeJennings 💃🕺😊
bullet with butterfly wings should show you the harder elements
Thanks Diane! I was never a huge fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, but I always liked this song. The rhythm and beat seems to bring me a burst of energy. Hypothetically, listening to this song while walking and carrying a backpack may help. Hypothetically, of course. 😉
I’m on it! 😜
Wow. Okay Diane, I have seen them in concert twice. Once at the Tibetan freedom concert in San Francisco in 1997. However I got this “double CD” right when it came out in 1995. Billy is ridiculous. This song has so much significance in my life, it’s not even funny. Listen to “Soma” I’m sure you’ll love it!!!!!!
5:22 the moustachioed cops😂🥸
There’s a part 2 to this video called “Perfect” which which shows the teens in this video as adults…
Diane like! bopping around
