2022 BMW M850i vs. M8 Competition (Gran Coupe)

- In this video I compare the 2022 M850i Gran Coupe to the 2022 M8 Competition Gran Coupe... both grey on red 4-door 8 Series models in this case!
There's no denying that the M8 Comp is the superior vehicle, but there are areas in which the M850i shines, and price is also certainly factor. Both boasting twin-turbo 4.4L V8's and an identical 553lb-ft of torque -- watch the video to find out what distinguishes one from the other!

You spending the extra $$$ for the M8 Comp over the M850i??
M8
@@samiraescobar7222 Lowkey same🙄
@@samiraescobar7222 naturally!
@@SeanGriffith7 you're a beast
No, the more calm version for me & saving some $$$
for me would be my choice.
I used to have an M4 CS. At first, I was completely obsessed with the car (I got it at 24 yrs old). As a driver, I felt completely connected to the car. After driving the car for 2 1/2 years, it then became exhausting. I decided to upgrade to the M8 Gran Coupe Competition. Going from the CS to an M8 Gran Coupe, felt like I was actually upgrading to a Bentley. The ride was extremely smooth compared to the CS. To be quite honest, I didn’t do much research in comparing the 850i to the M8 Gran Coupe prior to purchasing it. I knew I didn’t want to completely eliminate the stiff and sporty feel that the CS offered me. The first time I test drove the Gran Coupe Competition, I knew I had to have it. The burples on the downshift, ability to go from smooth comfort to mean track machine monster with the click of a button, etc. I’m a performance guy and that extra performance the M8 Gran Coupe offers is worth the $40k all day to me. In addition to the stock HP, I ended putting a JB4 Stage 1 Tune and intakes. My car now should be pushing high 600’s- low 700’s. I have not taken it to get dyno’d. What I can tell you is I eat Lambo Hurricanes like breakfast. It’s amazing to see their reaction when a 4-door smokes them.
How did you afford a m4 cs at 24 yrs old damn
(Maybe) parents help
What is the top speed on the M8 GC..I’ve recently added it to my vision board along with the MB S580…looking to decide with the next few years-
The fender vents are not fake on either, they allow the heat from the brakes to excape. You're welcome 😊
I mean if speed and performance is that much of a priority to drop an extra 40k, go take your m850i to a tuning company. They’ll make you m850i wayyyyyyy faster than a stock m8 competition with probably 20-30k to spare lol.
That's a very strong idea!! The thing you won't get, for just about any dollar amount, is the M-xDrive (with the ability to switch to RWD)... but your point still stands with the larger crowd: 'I wanna go fast and look cool'
@@Reoniz Very good review thank you ! but aren't you sure there isn't there a way still to switch RWD with a usb / app ? a friend of mine did it on his car ;)
@@RaphaelLacoste thank you! You know it may be possible, but that's past anything I'd wanna do to a brand new Bimmer personally!
Yeah that's a great idea void the warranty on a 100 K plus car
@@yanisknarian4002 lmaooo 😂😂
glass control and sunroof are my non-negotiables
I had a feeling... you're the prototypical M-performance driver -- balance of luxury and sportiness
I bought a 2019 CPO M850i Coupe "First Edition" with 11k km (6.8k miles) mileage on it, for about 119k CAD (93k USD). I love it very much and I think for this kind of performance cars, buying a used one is a good deal.
Sounds like you got a solid deal, enjoy her! 😎👍
Buying a used car is almost always a good deal, especially a high end BMW which depreciates more rapidly than their German counterparts like Audi (RS7) and Porsche (Panamera/Taycan). You made an extremely wise choice.
By far the best comparison video between these 2 cars.
Very good review pal , you’ve done your best! Appreciate it.
Thank you sir!
Both are gorgeous great fun cars to drive, but for me the less aggressive M850i is more than enough. German engineering has always been impressive no matter which brand! Thanks for your detailed informative clips as always sir 👍
Thank you for the thoughtful comment!! Ya... the M850i is likely more than enough for most!! It's quick and sounds great
Agreed, I had the 850 for a day, and OMG what a beast...for a daily driver it packed a serious punch and was super comfortable. Couldn't imagine using anymore power than that on a daily basis.
@@troyr3478 Spot on Troy.
@@troyr3478 sounds fantastic as well... I think the M8 is just an example of making a good thing even better (far from necessary! )
Thank you for making this comparison video.
Great Review THANKS!
Thank you sir!
thank you very much for review comparison bro
Gotchu!! Thanks for watching brotha
Nice Review 😊
In my opinion the m850i sounds better. The exhaust has a deeper note. The m8 is more raspy
Awesome review bro
Thank you brotha!
The proper review 👌
this review was perfect ngl
Thank you 🤠🤠
Is there a suspension chassis difference between the m8 and the m8? What are the obvious differences between them?
Great video, helps the buyer to distinguish the two and attempt to make a decision on what’s more important. For myself it would still be hard to choose between the two. I have got to have the real exhaust and the more aggressive wheels and tire size of the M8. The 850 is fine as far as everything else.
Thank you for the kind comment! I agree with your analysis... I'd probably say "f it!" and go full tilt M, but the M850i ain't no slouch!
i know getting stuff fixed and daily stuff like oil changes suck on bmws but this company really just keeps getting better and better
Hoorah! 😎
You lost me when you said the M8 sounds better. As an owner of an M5C (same engine as the M8) this is just ridiculous. S63 is way too raspy and the N63 sounds much gruntier.
I like the m850i's bumper it kinda resembles an e46 m3's
M8 comp for me 👍
😎 great choice!
I drove the M8 briefly at M track days (unfortunately not on the track, the M8 was only available on the drag race part of the day). The car is rapid and it sounds really really good. Personally I would go for an M3 over the M850, sure the 8 series is a better looking car but the M3 drives amazing (that one I did get to drive it on the track and I forgot about the looks real quick).
I would do the same! I'd probably take a 6spd M2 Competition over an M8 Competition... all about weight, size, and the fun that can be had!
@@Reoniz my man. That is what I have and I would take it over the M8 any day of the week and also over the M3/4. I got to drive the M2 comp right after driving the m3 comp and the m5 comp on the same track and the m2 comp was my favorite of them all, the most fun easily. Keep up the good work on the videos, always enjoy seeing a new one from you!
@@oficina_moomoo great minds think alike! Thank you sir!! 😎
Shorter axles, taller/widerwheels, wider front fenders, smaller final gear, different manifold and turbos in the m8
Please, what is the color name of M8 Competition ?!!
The subtle differences make the M8 more desirable (and worth the money imo), but what matters for daily driving is: how is the ride quality?
M cars tend to be a bit unbearable (for me) and harsh on the real world road/asphalt imperfection.
Can you share some input?
With the adaptive suspension, the difference isn't too crazy between these... the M850i is sporty enough that the more noticeable change would be going from a 7 series to the M8comp
I’ve owned both and the price gap between the two is very small in the used the market. M8 all day everyday and twice on Sunday.
Which one is longer? And I would definitely go for the grand coupe but I hope I can do a add on for the sun roff
These are both Gran Coupes so they are the exact same length! You're gonna have to go M850i if you want a sunroof, it's not available on the M8!
Great review thank you
As an m850i owner I don’t believe offers the leatherette for the m850i as it still is a $100k + vehicle
Fit and finish in both of these cars is second to none in any if bmws series’s unless getting into x5m x6m
And 7series
Such a sick car! And I just meant some of the lower door trim and lower dash, I believe it's leatherette to "look" like a full leather interior (or at least a lower grade leather than the rest of your interior)
Whereas it felt 100% consistent in the M8C 👍
@josh adams, It states on BMW's site on the configuration page that "Leather on all seating surfaces; other components may be Leather or Leatherette." That's on the M850i configurator.
@@danoneill130 ya exactly, it's only noticeable when you have the two back to back, the M850i is still a super luxurious vehicle!
I’d be cool if there can. Be a carbon fiber sunroof option
I'm sure they'll crack the code one day, but I prefer the slick top as it were
Thanks, great review and you stayed impartial. Both nice but I ordered the M8 Competition. I had the 2018 M5 so I just couldnt go backwards. I drove the M850, nice car but not close on performance. The 850 is a Great option for those that don't care about having the most power or going to the track.
Well said, I agree! Especially coming from an M already, you'll notice the little differences between the two... at the end of the day the M850i isn't an M, but it's one heck of a machine nonetheless.
Well stated, for those of us that are already accustomed to a high performing vehicle, the 850 is a step down and would likely disappoint in that regard. I am tempted to give the M8 a shot as I’m also considering a Taycan Turbo.
@Thee A Lister I have the 23 M8, fantastic car but you can't go wrong with either of your choices. Cars at that level are all superb, it just becomes a matter of personal choice. Nice to have adult conversations with people that understand there are different cars for different tastes. Enjoy!
@@robertyoung3664 I’d love to get your impression of the M8 from an owner’s perspective. I am really intrigued by BMW’s offering but am strongly considering a few other vehicles.
@Thee A Lister it's subjective but I fell in love with the bodystyle, interior and love the detail inside BMWs, especially the 8 series. I ran a half mile event with downpipes and a JB4 tuner we ran 159 MPH, which is faster than most cars unless they do significant mods. The Competition is very smooth but if you program the M1 and M2 buttons it becomes an entirely different car. Don't get the carbon fiber seats, they are uncomfortable, I sat in one and did nit get them on mine. Get the upgraded sound system and otherwise no problems and I have 9k miles. Let me know what other questions you have.
You say the big difference in the engine's you then talk about transmission ? so is there a difference other than tuning?
Well the engine is the same displacement and torque, but the engine itself is different... and the transmission at its core is very similar but has different tuning. The major difference is in the chassis and drivetrain!
went and checked out the gran coupe today. beautiful car. almost bought it. still considering it. the only thing to me is i'm more of a bare bones kind of guy. would have no need for a lot of the features this thing offers. paying $115,000 (out the door) is paying quite a bit extra for those features i could care less about. man, but this car is beautiful. think i'm gonna stick with the hellcat charger i ordered. $30 grand less.
Wow, the hellcat charger is in many ways the same kinda car (big grand tourer with some sportiness) and simultaneously such a different car 😂
The hellcat is now played out.
@trueyork9290 I ended up buying the charger hellcat. $1,000 under msrp. About $45,000 less than they were offering for the BMW. Played out or not this thing is a lot of fun.
@@mekrobar7872
Understood - congrads Sir.
@trueyork9290 thank you, man. But, tbh, I think I would have went with the mustang gt500 but I needed a 4 door.
M850i sound is better than m8 due to difference between manifold exhaust in factory spec.
Yeap
The M850i is more than enough for me , IMO. But if I wanted to go all out in the 8 series for BMW, I would get a Alpina B8 in Alpina Blue!!! That has just a little bit more of everything performance and interior wise of the M8 Comp. Good video and review mate!!
M8 comp gran coupe is slightly faster while costing damn near $40,000 more. Really not worth the extra cash unless you are obsessed with the fastest 0-60/ quarter mile times, but even then you'll be tuning your vehicle so whatever the car is stock wont matter for long.
Also considering the N63TU2 in the latest M850i is easily the best sounding BMW the company makes by a mile and a half. S63TU3 in the M8 comp sounds great but them N model engines are so much more throaty with the right amount of burbles its quite literally the perfect sounding car and its all from factory.
M850i for me . I can’t see where I would ever need the m8 comp and it’s a lot more stiff which is not for everyone
My dream car !!!
Hell ya!! (ps love your podcast name 😂)
Sick
Thanks!!
Buddy it is the same engine you can’t call it a different engine because it’s tuned differently. It’s the same production block.
Hellll yeah
Yessir!! 😎
Cavernous means a very large open space. I think you meant cave like.
If you are looking for a rocket car, it’s hard to imagine the M8 is your best choice.
All in all, the M8 feels WORSE than a high spec M850i.
Why?
First, we can’t option a sunroof in the M8. This makes a night and day difference in a massive car like this.
Second, unbelievably, the M850i comes with standard rear steering wheel, while on the M8 we can’t not even get it as an extra.
Finally, the M8 suspension is too stiff. It doesn’t make sense a GT without a comfortable “Comfort” mode…
I would have no doubt choosing the M850i over the M8.
Want a fast, monstrous and reliable $150,000 supercar?
Buy an Audi R8 Performance, V10, 620 hp, 2022., not a M8.
even the top of the M series have the ZF trans
That's true now! But it's a variation of it with different/more aggressive programming. Hence being a "full on M"
Dravit undertone is gold, not green.
Please, what is the color name of M8 Competition ?!!
M850i got xdrive too
Sounds sweet! 2 or 4 door?
I’m forever a bimmer girl but I wish they had put the big grill on the competition M8 like the M4 that would have set this car off right appearance wise.
Hell sir what colour is that car? I love it
The M850i is Dravit grey and the M8C is Brands Hatch grey
31k isn't almost 40k more its 30k more. Why would u say almost 40k more? It's not. 10 racks is 10 racks
After taxes my friend!
M8 COMP looks better and its superior in every way to the M850i if you want a comfortable car get a 750i.
Fair enough! I'm with you, the M8 Comp would be my pick if money weren't an issue... but I do appreciate the value prop that the M850i is in comparison
The M8 looks better
