I had never seen this performance by Melchior, almost universally considered the greatest Wagner tenor in history. He was just winding down his operatic career at this time. Just another example of the unequaled brilliance of the programming of the Ed Sullivan show. He had virtually everybody of note on his show, right from the beginning of his 25 year reign. There is nothing remotely comparable on TV today. BRAVO!!!

I think it’s pretty universal that he was the best heldentenor ever the other greats Slezak, Lorenz, Windgassen, Svanholm, Volker, etc… could match him on a good night but never surpass him

Such a giant voice. Shows his heldentenor colors very well.

I always thought Ezio Pinza owned this song, but Lauritz has broadened my appreciation for tenors - which was already pretty high. But Ezio is still the master of songs from "South Pacific."

Amazing to think that the little girl, if she's still around, is in her 80's. I wonder if she remembers.

Fantastic upload! This is such a charming performance, and a fantastic rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening"! Thank you so much for posting it! Lauritz Melchior was a great singer, and I hope to see more of him, along with Jan Peerce, James Melton (especially his ballad performance of "Beyond the Sea") and Mario Del Monaco! I get so excited seeing what you will upload each day! These are priceless video gems!

Der Mann war einfach sensationell. Vielleicht nahm er es nicht immer ganz genau mit jedem Ton, sicher besaß er nicht die schönste Stimme. Aber sie war suggestiv, instinktsicher, unverwüstlich. Melchior "glaubte", was er sang.

Staggering: his age PLUS dancing...then hitting that note! Staggering. (Not sure--was he still singing when he lifted her???)

@@Tkimba2 Singing is a magnified speech, I am not sure what you are implying but he was a great singer and this is a good testimony of that.

@@1UShawn singing is resonant voice + melody.
I live Melchior and his voice, I'm just not liking the style here. As I said above it's more parlato than cantato.
I assume it's the song interpretation or his own interpretation, but still...
