    Happy to see Betty White back on

    H/H match update for 1336 and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    This is week 268 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455), so there are just over 20 more weeks until the final curtain... These episodes were taped on October 6, 1978, and originally aired in early to mid-November of 1978.
    This week, Brett & Charles are in their places with bright, shiny faces, and they're joined by:
    ~~~ Semi-regular *Betty White* , returning for her 71st week (of 75 total). Betty last appeared in 1321-1325, and her overall track record in matching in the H/H is terrific despite two misses during her most recent week: 46.9% (23 matches in 49 attempts).
    ~~~ *Gary Burghoff* joins the panel for his 41st week (of 43 total). He notably filled in for Charles in the third seat for a long stretch (mainly in 1975), but this is his first time in the #5 seat. His next appearance in 1391-1395 will also be in #5, but for his final week (which is also the final week of the show, 1451-1455) he'll be back in #3, as Charles' final appearance comes two weeks before the last episode of Match Game '79. Although based on less data, Gary's H/H success rate is superior to Betty's (and Charles's): 62.5% (5 matches in 8 attempts).
    ~~~ *Nipsey Russell* will return for his 26th week (of 28 total). He last appeared for two consecutive weeks (1306-1310 & 1311-1315), and scored his first H/H match in episode 1310. That was his 9th attempt (and he hasn't been chosen since). Coincidentally, Richard also scored his first H/H match on his 9th attempt. Nipsey held down the 5th seat during 1306-1310, and that was and will be his only week in that seat.
    ~~~ Last but not least, *Judy Landers* will appear for her one and only week on the panel.
    This looks like a good week with mostly familiar faces, including the two most frequent male guest panelists (Gary and Nipsey). Yes, other than regulars Richard (257 weeks) and Charles (235 weeks), Gary (43) and Nipsey (28) are the two male panelists with the most weeks on the show (Dick Martin is next in line, with 22 weeks).
    On the female side, Brett is the MG Queen with 286 weeks (more than any other star)! After her comes Fannie Flagg (90 weeks total), Betty White (75), Patti Deutsch (42), Joyce Bulifant (38), Elaine Joyce (26), Marcia Wallace (18), Jo Ann Pflug (14), Patty Duke Astin (14), and Mary Wickes (14).
    Perhaps it's just my subjective feeling, but scanning the roll calls of the remaining weeks of the program, it feels like there are more and more newer and one-and-done celebs on the panel and fewer and fewer of our beloved MG family members. In some ways, it feels like this week sort of marks another "end" of the show (with Richard's departure being an obvious earlier endpoint).
    I may be wrong. I'm watching them all in order, so I may discover a lot of great moments and fine new additions to the Match Game panel in the remaining weeks ahead, but to me, now, it feels like this week truly marks an end to the show...
    ~~~Today's action:
    Our three-time champion fails to make the crucial connection in his final question and is defeated. But his time on the show was profitable to the tune of $11,300 (he scored a $10K H/H with Brett).
    *Today's audience match question: "Ernie________"*
    (My thoughts: Kofax, ???, ???) - Another dreaded name question!
    The celebs: Charles (Ford), Betty (Pyle), Nipsey (Kovacs) - I admit it, I didn't know how to spell Ernie Kovacs or even know who he was. I thought he was a baseball player, ha!
    The choice: Pyle
    The answers: Pyle, Ford, Kovacs - Kudos to Nipsey for getting the top answer in third position!
    Well, after three audience match fails last week, the $100 match doesn't look too bad, now does it?
    Wheel time. Today's special star is... Nipsey! And it's a double!
    Stats: Nipsey last played (and matched) in 1310. He's had 9 attempts, and just the 1 match so far...
    *Today's H/H question: "Run and_______"*
    (Another decent old-style H/H question. Run and hide is my answer.)
    Nipsey begins writing almost immediately. Somehow, what he's writing seems longer than "Hide", but who knows? Today was a bit unusual as there was no input from any other panelists. Lately, all the celebs have been agonizing over their answers and showing their cards and soliciting feedback from their colleagues. Maybe today's question is just that simple?
    "The only thing I could think of was run and hide," she says, offering my alternate choice. Just as she was about to answer, I thought of "run and play" but I still like my (and her) answer better. The audience likes it too - I'd rate their response as about a 9. Nipsey, however, makes an "oh, no" face. It looks genuine, not like a fake-out. What could he have said?
    Dang! I would not want to play poker with that man! I was convinced to the very last second he had a different answer. But he wrote "Hide."
    Nipsey scores his second H/H match today!
    Not only does he get the week off to a good start in the H/H department, but he joins the ranks of celebs with 2 matches. One more match and he'll move to the big leader board - quite possible considering he has 14 shows left after today.
    ~~~Here's the updated list of all celebs with exactly 2 matches (in alphabetical order):
    Each celebrity's total number of weeks on "Match Game '7x" along with his/her first and last appearance is indicated, and an asterisk before their name indicates they've "retired" from MG, and their H/H stats are now complete.
    (*)Charlie Brill 2 out of 3 attempts (66.7%) - (3 weeks total. First week: 281-285; Final week: 426-430)
    Bill Daily 2 out of 5 (50.0%) - (15 weeks total. First week: 101-105; Final week: 1451-1455)
    (*)Ann Elder 2 out of 3 (66.7%) - (10 weeks total. First week: 51-55; Final week: 491-495)
    (*)Bonnie Franklin 2 out of 4 (50%) (4 weeks total. First week: 636-640; Final week: 1266-1270)
    (*)Stu Gilliam 2 out of 5 (40%) - (2 weeks total. First week: 41-45; Final week: 51-55)
    Elaine Joyce 2 out of 4 (50.0%) - (26 weeks total. First week: 46-50; Final week: 1451-1455)
    (*)George Kennedy 2 out of 2 (100%) - (5 weeks total. First week: 666-670; Final week: 1166-1170)
    (*)Jack Klugman 2 out of 6 (33.3%) - (5 weeks total. First week: 1-5; Final week: 1321-1325)
    Richard Paul - 2 out of 6 (33.3%) - (5 weeks total. First week: 1236-1240; Final week: 1411-1415)
    Nipsey Russell 2 out of 10 (20.0%) - (28 weeks total. First week: 61-65; Final week: 1426-1430)
    Debralee Scott - 2 out of 3 66.7%) - (10 weeks total. First week: 801-806; Final week: 1406-1410)
    (*)Trish Stewart 2 out of 2 (100%) - (5 weeks total. First week: 206-210; Final week: 996-1000)
    ~~~Finally, here's our standing leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she or he has "retired" from the show and their H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts).
    (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts).
    Joyce Bulifant - 66.7% (4 matches in 6 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 62.5% (5 matches in 8 attempts).
    Charles - 50.6% (41 matches in 81 attempts).
    Betty - 46.9% (23 matches in 49 attempts).
    Fannie - 46.2% (18 matches in 39 attempts).
    Brett - 44.9% (40 matches in 89 attempts).
    (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts).
    (*)Richard - 42.5% (373 matches in 878 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1336, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. (Note: episode 849 was never produced.) These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036. These stats do, however, include results of episodes 1309 through 1317, found on channels other than this one.
    Remember when "Jock Strap" wasn't acceptable? It used to embarrass Gene as it previously wasn't' euphemistic enough.
    Incidentally, this was filmed during 1978, and Judy Landers was born in 1958--thus, she couldn't have been TURNING 19 "tomorrow" that year. It remains to be seen if she forgot somehow, or she lied about her age by shaving off a year.
      Wikipedia lists Judy's birthday as October 7, 1958...While she couldn't turn 19, depending on when this was taped, should have been 19...
    Rayburn was good, but that 'binaca kiss of new celebrities' habit would be hard to reconcile today and frankly, really creeps me out now.
    I went to Judy Landers house as a favor to Pamela Bach Hasselhoff. It was a child's birthday party. And afterwards Judy kept having Pamela Bach Hasselhoff drill me about some jewelry Her Mom had that went missing. I was so offended. I kept retracing my steps with Pamela. But I was so disgusted that because I was there to keep an eye on the Hasselhoff kids as a FAVOR. These self obsorbed selfish people questioned me. Still gets me angry as there were so many people and they had nerve to question me. A licensed child care provider. Who had been bonded as I worked at a bank. Obviously I didn't appreciate being treated as less than. Plus it wasn't a gig I was compensated for. I stopped working with wannabe actresses after that.
