Taking an American Pilot Flying in the UK for the First Time!

- I took Pilot Christy Wong, of @TakingOff and Instagram fame, on her first flight in the UK from High Wycombe to Leicester. Between noise abatement procedures, different radio services and a slot to takeoff, things were very different! (And that's before we start flying on the wrong side of the road...)

could've warned me you were going to be at wycombe airpark; I'd have made sure there was a beer waiting for you 😂👍
Thanks for rescuing Christy and Kevin!!
You’re very welcome, great to reunite the team back together!
It's always interesting hearing what GA pilots from the US have to say about flying in the UK. I'm from Liverpool but worked in Casper, Wyoming in the mid and late 1990s. So, my first 36 hours of flying lessons were over there. I never continued flying and only restarted lessons (from scratch) recently. One thing that REALLY got me was the Comms. RT is so different here, it's taken me forever to learn.
Fun fact: the transition altitude is normally 6000' in the UK and the transition level is the lowest flight level that provides 1000' separation from the transition altitude. So at or above QNH1013 the transition level is FL70, and below QNH1013 the transition level is FL80 :-)
Christy's observation that there is a lot of green space in the UK is correct. Just 13% of land in the UK is used for urban development and there are nearly 55million people who live in these urban areas. Allowing just 1% more land would house another 4 million people!. The UK is not overcrowded.
fantastic to see 2 of my fav youtubers combining.
Great video Noel really enjoying content mate 👍
This is a great topic! Very interesting video all around!
Brilliant video Noel
The maths on that AvGas cost is roughly $10 US a gallon. $2.70ish for a litre, 3.78 litres in a US gallon. Not cheap.
went up so badly recently...
Noel enjoyable vlog , Very informative 👍
Nice to see you landing at my home airfield. Great vid Noel 🙂
Thanks for sharing, nice to see you all and YT channel crossovers are always entertaining 😊😊
Last time I was at 'Booker' I was about 3 or 4 with my dad doing his PPL in Condors and then C150's that was circa 1969/70😊👍 It's changed but not a huge amount, Ive not worn so well though🙄🙄😄😄😄😕
✈️love these vids
Very entertaining video, Noel 👍👏👏👏
Thank you!
Crazy to see the place I did all my training at not so long ago, seeing the aircraft on the vid isn't something I thought I'd see. Always much preferred the noise abatement for 24R rather than the 06L, makes for a much nicer circuit!!
“Own terrain clearance” is because you’re below the BZN TSL at 2000ft - they’d struggle to give you a TS if they couldn’t see you! Always find it interesting how people misinterpret the service they’re receiving.
Good video as always 👍
Thanks Matt! Yes makes sense, appreciate the info!
Good Job!!!
Hey it’s Chrisy Wong! Wow! And she flys the PA-28A
I own a PA-28-161 🙂 Looooove Warriors!
@@pilotchristy Nice! I’ve flown on PA-28’s but I’m taking my ppl training on Cessna 172’s but my friend has a PA-28 and it’s super fun!
Another good video. A standard overhead join is normally from 2000ft QFE not 1000ft.
Thank you! Yes I was a little early descending to circuit height on this one. There was no other traffic in the heli pattern at the time so it was clear, and just one ahead of us in the fixed wing pattern with nothing else joining.
Awesome Noel you're a PILOT!.
I am indeed :)
If you fly with an American again, you might like to alter your route slightly to overfly some of the american Airforce bases from WWII.
What? She's a famous NTX aviator. Always great content. Tell me you're an honorary NTX aviator after this VLOG.
He is an honorary NTX aviator! My plan is to get him out here and make it official in the Wong Warrior. 🙂
Did Christy autograph the Noel Warrior or club aircraft not allowed to. Glad you didn't any aero's.Shamr Christy did not take controls, would she feel comfortable with radio work over here v America. Nice glassed there Christy!
I can't wait to get my own plane so I can do this! First thing going on the tail is a Noel sticker 😂
Flight level 45?? Just what is that? Flight levels start at the transistion alt which is 6000 on the Jet, 1013!
Haha, yep we have flight levels down to 3500ft here depending on the airports transition level.
@@FlyWithNoelPhilips What a stupid idea. Flew for 30 years, over 17000 hours and just why would you. So that would mena the transistion level is at 500 feet? GA aircraft are just that. A flight level is flown on the JET Atmosphere so that means using 1019 and not QNH. Very dnagerous hahaha!
@@jimwalsh8520 I think this is common all over Europe.
@@skyhawk_4526 What is the point? PPLs flying around below the reeal transistion flying at 4000 feet and calling a FL and on 1013? What ever next?
You didnt let Christy have a go?
Where's the airfield Noel says? With a GPS directly in front of him! Come on....
Poor Christy.. desperate to do some handling but denied her big moment on your YT Vlog.
Next time, eh?
Wait until he comes to Texas to fly with me! 😎
Noel you git nothing wrong with the south lol 😂 amazing vlog take care be safe.
FIRST! 😂
That doesn’t count you’ve already seen it before I did 😂😂
@@FlyWithNoelPhilips Ah, but I didn’t know what time you were going to upload it 😁🤯😂
