This series changed my whole perception of this war. I thought it was a decisive victory for Prussia with Frederick winning every battle except maybe one in Austria, but thus far it has been nothing but a desperate struggle for them
Indeed. Frederick lost an equal amount of men in this engagement, as the Swedes did at the disastrous Battle of Poltava. Combine the losses from Landeshut (1760) and Maxen (1759) and you have roughly the same amount the Swedes lost at both Poltava and the subsequent surrender at Perevolochna. Of course, Charles' army was smaller than Frederick's, so his losses hurt more, but it kinda puts things in perspective.

But this "giant" Swedish Empire had a population of 2,700,000 in 1700, while "tiny" Prussia had 4,500,000 in 1756; the much fewer Swedes were tasked with defending a landmass much larger than Prussia. Not to mention, the Swedish Empire relied on a navy which required soldiers and sailors too.

Exactly. This Laudon fellow was a capable general. He completely encircled the Prussians during this battle, and took advantage of his superior numbers.
Most people think it’s easy to exploit your superior numbers. But in reality, and in history, it has been shown that many commanders weren’t able to exploit this advance. So yes, Luadon defeated the Prussians before the battle even began.

Spoiler alert but I just read about what happened next in the 1760 campaign. Frederick moved against Laudon, Daun went to reinforce Laudon, then Frederick went back to siege Dresden, so Daun also came back. Then Frederick went back to Silesia and was surrounded on 3 sides by Laudon, Daun, and the Russians. But he fought Laudon 1v1 and destroyed him, then turned back and fought Daun while super outnumbered and beat Daun but both sides suffered enormous losses. However, it was more about the morale at that point. After seeing both Austrian armies get beaten, neither Russia or France was eager to fight so they basically stopped. And then in 1762 the Tsarina died and Frederick fought one final 1v1 against Austria and won, forcing them to make peace. Amazing
Laudon and Daun were both good generals, but they disliked also each other. At the battle of Liegnitz, when Frederick managed to beat Laudon, Daun didn't use his superior and fresh reinforcements due his rivalry with Laudon and being overcautior as usual. If Daun had helped Laudon at Liegnitz in the right time with his superior numbers, Frederick would've lost again. However, Frederick managed to beat both generals separately at Liegnitz, Toragu and Burkersdorf. Frederick then got semi-favorable terms with keeping Silesia and Prussia being still a great power, despite failing to annex Saxony at the same time.

It is honestly a pretty awesome display of a last stand and really speaks to the quality of the prussian officer corps to keep their soldiers fighting in what is basically a full on pocket, only breaking after literally running out of ammunition, having their last line of retreat cut off, their last hope in form of the cavalery gone and being backed against a river Most armies would propably already have collapsed the moment they were forced to perform a fighting retreat over a river in form of a single bridge in the first place. The only really twisted and lingering bad taste to this is that Prussian battles like Lanshut and Fredericks wars in general would inspire future generations in their darkest times to fight on to the last man in hope of a miracle. The believe that "a miracle could happen again" in similar situations would cost europe millions of lifes in the 20th cenutry.
If you are referring in part to the Germans in the Second World War, then you should know that they were never going to surrender just because the war had become unwinnable. Many saw the war as one of annihilation, so surrender would mean death or worse anyway, and the officer corp were determined not to surrender 'early' as they believed they had in the First World War.
The artwork and character portraits are beautiful. Frederick is on the cusp, at the edge of defeat- the edge of everything. But yet to know he turned it all around.

It is absolutely aesthetically pleasing, but none of the historical figures I am familiar with look anything like the real people. Also the dress - it's vaguely period inspired, but otherwise looks like the chacter concept art for a movie/tv series/game: none of it is anywhere near historically accurate and some of the smaller details just makes plain no sense - the medals on the military awards look like delicate blossoms, the headwear is pure steampunk and the bits on the horses bridles look like someone took a random 10-year-old, gave them an image of a ceremonial Household Cavalry bridle, a glue gun, and a box of various carabiner hooks and said "you've got 15 minutes to build me one just like in the photo!". Also, some of the physics (especially where headwear and hair interact) is unnatural and the anatomy of the horses legs in the battle scene at 15:51 is something straight out of a nightmare no human being would compose that way. It's a fun idea and certainly makes for entertaining viewing, but God help any poor soul who doesn't know any better because they have no deeper knowledge of this era, and thinks this is anything other than some great fantasy art of the ad-hoc "imagination" of a machine.
With these battles in the Seven Years War, I'm surprised that Prussia survived long enough to take part in the Napoleonic and Franco-Prussian Wars. I'm interested to see how they pull it off.
It is a miracle Prussia even survived through that war, it just couldn't get a break throughout last years of the war. Also loved the AI images you used in the video.
Interesting the difference between Frederick's reactions after the battle of Maxen and the one after the battle of Landeshut. Even though they were pretty much similar battles.

Watching the video I am like "this is horrific!". Then you point out the casualties and I am like "that's it?" How little battles in the ages past affected the direction of nations.

I'm curious. Are you going to cover the rest of the Seven Year's War or is this series mostly about Frederick's direct involvement? Will there be any videos on the French and Indian War, the Pomeranian War (Sweden's involvement) and the Third Carnatic War (India)?
I am planning on covering other theatres. However, I won't cover the Pomeranian war. Those battles are too small and too poorly documented to dedicate an entire video to it.
@@HoH I see what you mean about the Pomeranian War, but I feel like it would be a mistake to outright ignore it as if it never happened. The Swedes were little more than a thorn in Prussia's side in the grand scheme of things, but they did divert much needed troops Frederick could have used on his primary front. Have you looked at the Kronoskaf website? It does list a number of different sources for the Pomeranian War and the different actions that took place. Additionally the Swedish Army Museum is more than happy to help with inquiries. I personally asked them all sorts of questions relating to Napoleonic era troop uniforms and banners for my tabletop miniature gaming hobby and not once was I made to feel like I was bothering them (even got a free book from them about the Guard Infantry banners, even though it was in Swedish, but I got around that with a camera translation app). If they were happy and willing to help a goblin like me, I'd say they would be more than happy to help yourself. They may be able to point you in the right direction for better documentatiion you could use to make a general overview of the war, if your normal format just isn't possible. Still, if you don't make it I do understand the reasons why.

Sir In this video you clearly described the problem with king frederick. After kolin his priority should been KEEPING ARMY INTECT with low casualties because prussia could not afford heavy casualties. That would have given him time replace loses with relatives ease. frederick had thrown his army into useless engagements often, like breslau before leuthen, Kay before kunersdorf, maxen, landeshut etc.. he threw his army in the costly battles that were not supposed to be happen like zorndorf. It was miracle that his kingdom was existing after war.
The town is pronounced "Landes-hut", so the s is pronounced as usual and separate from the h. The name is a conglomeration of the words "Land" (land) and "Hut" (vigilance, but difficult to translate properly).
Ah, small minor mistake: there's an additional e in the word. Landshut like you said is in bavaria, this is the village of Landeshut so there's an additional letter to pronounce. for native english speakers i would write it "Lund-as-hoot"

I’ve watched many of your Prussia videos. I am in America, my ancestors on my grandfather’s side come from Prussia and I’m having trouble with one generation. I know this is a big ask but please indulge me. Here’s what I found: Johann Gottfried Leischow Jr, 1819 - 1892, Büssow, Kolberg-Körlin, Pommern, Preussen (Büssow), Allemagne (Germany) Johann Gottfried Leischow Sr, 1785 - ?, Büssow, Kolberg-Körlin, Pommern, Preussen (Büssow), Allemagne (Germany) Peter Leischow, 1785 (?) - 1832(?) married to *** Luitgardt Kressin*** death 1800(?) I have used multiple spellings of Leischow, many. No information on Peter or Luitgardt Kressin. I see Kressin is actually a city so I thought it may be a House, but no luck in my searches on any platform. With all of the upheaval during this time, I am curious as to if there are any other places besides Ancestry which might help me with this puzzle. Or anything you can give me that would be helpful in any way. Thank you in advance 🙏❤️
I'm still waiting for the chapter in which Frederick finally wins the war somehow and becomes famous. Honestly I thought he performed much better considering is fame. I stand corrected.
A great series about a fascinating but otherwise sadly neglected time. The quality of your videos is almost on the same level as Epic History TV and HistoryMarche. Only one small criticism: the pictures of the generals are not so good, only once you see e.g. the real Loudon, in other cases the faces, hairstyles and uniforms are definitely from another era. Because of this unnecessary lack of authenticity, the quality suffers a little, but that's just a minor point. Please keep up the great work!

I work on these videos on my own, and though there's a sharp increase in quality throughout time, it is important to hear other people's perspectives/advice on certain things. Because there are so many things (truly, so many!) to take into account when creating these videos, I often have blind spots. Just today I created animated cards sliding from behind a banner to show the troop count for each army. I have no idea how I hadn't thought of that a year ago when I began making battle videos. It is so much easier, and looks so much better, than the scrolls or black box with text in it.

By the way, I thought your pictures of Frederick were excellent, they really portrayed his desperate situation well.
those hats are what happens when an AI combines (for the guy in front) an 1812-pattern French infantry shako with a random "standard" court dress bicorne from the 19th/20th century; and (for the guys in the back) a 16th/17th century morion helmet (think: conquistador or Vatican Swiss Guards) with the long-pointed version of a contemporary tyrolean hat, respectively.
Excellent video but marred as many of these are by the varying quality of AI rendered art which becomes more distorted with every moment one looks at it.
Unfortunately I haven't found a better solution that I can afford yet. There are not many paintings available, and with the artworks I really do try to take my time and create artwork that's engaging to look at for the 5-10 seconds it is visible.

A very engaging presentation with high production value! I don't want to nitpick all the pronounciations (can't really expect hobbyists to learn speaking in another language when it ultimately doesn't matter for historical accuracy) but a relatively simple and noticeable improvement would be saying Landes-hut, not Lande-shut (there's no "sh" sound in the name).
He saved Prussia and thus gave Germany a future. He was not perfect and clearly did make mistakes, as honestly shown here but he also unlike many rulers suffered with his people as great commanders have always done. (Caeser, Ibn Khalid, Alexander, Rommel, Chuikov (of Stalingrad), Montgomery, etc etc all of whom did NOT command from the rear but lived on the front lines the same harsh life as their common soldiers. Without his resistence Prussia could have ended up as Poland did. Cut into pieces and disappeared from the map!

Frederick was an above average general and a great administrator, but his aggressive foreign policy towards bigger and smaller nations almost led to his downfall. One might wonder what if Elizabeth of Russia didn't die too early...
"Landshut" and "Landeshut" are distinct places, even if their names have a common root. Also, there's no "sh" sound in there - they are compound words of "Land" and "hut", literally "Land's guard". So the "s" and "h" are pronounced separately. As for "Vogelsdorf", the "v" should probably be pronounced more like an "f". Also, you switched back and forth between pronouncing "Fouqué" as "fook" and "fookay" - since there's an accent on the "e", the "e" is not mute.

I'm curious. Are you going to cover the rest of the Seven Year's War or is this series mostly about Frederick's direct involvement? Will there be any videos on the French and Indian War, the Pomeranian War (Sweden's involvement) and the Third Carnatic War (India)?
I am planning on covering other theatres. However, I won't cover the Pomeranian war. Those battles are too small and too poorly documented to dedicate an entire video to it.
@@HoH I see what you mean about the Pomeranian War, but I feel like it would be a mistake to outright ignore it as if it never happened. The Swedes were little more than a thorn in Prussia's side in the grand scheme of things, but they did divert much needed troops Frederick could have used on his primary front.
Have you looked at the Kronoskaf website? It does list a number of different sources for the Pomeranian War and the different actions that took place.
Additionally the Swedish Army Museum is more than happy to help with inquiries.
I personally asked them all sorts of questions relating to Napoleonic era troop uniforms and banners for my tabletop miniature gaming hobby and not once was I made to feel like I was bothering them (even got a free book from them about the Guard Infantry banners, even though it was in Swedish, but I got around that with a camera translation app).
If they were happy and willing to help a goblin like me, I'd say they would be more than happy to help yourself.
They may be able to point you in the right direction for better documentatiion you could use to make a general overview of the war, if your normal format just isn't possible.
Still, if you don't make it I do understand the reasons why.

If there are some events that are worth having a closer look at in the future, I'll definitely take my time to cover them.

Sir In this video you clearly described the problem with king frederick. After kolin his priority should been KEEPING ARMY INTECT with low casualties because prussia could not afford heavy casualties. That would have given him time replace loses with relatives ease.
frederick had thrown his army into useless engagements often, like breslau before leuthen, Kay before kunersdorf, maxen, landeshut etc.. he threw his army in the costly battles that were not supposed to be happen like zorndorf. It was miracle that his kingdom was existing after war.

Great vid! But „Landeshut“ isn‘t pronounced „Landshut“ but rather „Landes-hoot“, with the a in „Landes“ pronounced like in „Wrath“ or „Wasp“.

The town is pronounced "Landes-hut", so the s is pronounced as usual and separate from the h. The name is a conglomeration of the words "Land" (land) and "Hut" (vigilance, but difficult to translate properly).
German here simple translation for Hut is Hat

Ah, small minor mistake: there's an additional e in the word. Landshut like you said is in bavaria, this is the village of Landeshut so there's an additional letter to pronounce. for native english speakers i would write it "Lund-as-hoot"

I’ve watched many of your Prussia videos. I am in America, my ancestors on my grandfather’s side come from Prussia and I’m having trouble with one generation. I know this is a big ask but please indulge me.

With all of the upheaval during this time, I am curious as to if there are any other places besides Ancestry which might help me with this puzzle.

A great series about a fascinating but otherwise sadly neglected time. The quality of your videos is almost on the same level as Epic History TV and HistoryMarche.
Only one small criticism: the pictures of the generals are not so good, only once you see e.g. the real Loudon, in other cases the faces, hairstyles and uniforms are definitely from another era. Because of this unnecessary lack of authenticity, the quality suffers a little, but that's just a minor point. Please keep up the great work!
Thank you for the feedback. I'm not so sure about the portraits - Lacy, Daun, Henry and Frederick were all created with their real faces in mind.

@@donaustadt All good, I didn't take it as personal criticism. I work on these videos on my own, and though there's a sharp increase in quality throughout time, it is important to hear other people's perspectives/advice on certain things. Because there are so many things (truly, so many!) to take into account when creating these videos, I often have blind spots.
Just today I created animated cards sliding from behind a banner to show the troop count for each army. I have no idea how I hadn't thought of that a year ago when I began making battle videos. It is so much easier, and looks so much better, than the scrolls or black box with text in it.

By the way, I thought your pictures of Frederick were excellent, they really portrayed his desperate situation well.

those hats are what happens when an AI combines (for the guy in front) an 1812-pattern French infantry shako with a random "standard" court dress bicorne from the 19th/20th century; and (for the guys in the back) a 16th/17th century morion helmet (think: conquistador or Vatican Swiss Guards) with the long-pointed version of a contemporary tyrolean hat, respectively.

Excellent video but marred as many of these are by the varying quality of AI rendered art which becomes more distorted with every moment one looks at it.
Unfortunately I haven't found a better solution that I can afford yet. There are not many paintings available, and with the artworks I really do try to take my time and create artwork that's engaging to look at for the 5-10 seconds it is visible.

I don't want to nitpick all the pronounciations (can't really expect hobbyists to learn speaking in another language when it ultimately doesn't matter for historical accuracy) but a relatively simple and noticeable improvement would be saying Landes-hut, not Lande-shut (there's no "sh" sound in the name).

Frederick really destroyed his kingdom with his hubris and arrogance. Also the battle animation is very beautiful in this episode.
Did he though? His Kingdom would never have risen to what it was without his action.
He saved Prussia and thus gave Germany a future. He was not perfect and clearly did make mistakes, as honestly shown here but he also unlike many rulers suffered with his people as great commanders have always done. (Caeser, Ibn Khalid, Alexander, Rommel, Chuikov (of Stalingrad), Montgomery, etc etc all of whom did NOT command from the rear but lived on the front lines the same harsh life as their common soldiers. Without his resistence Prussia could have ended up as Poland did. Cut into pieces and disappeared from the map!

"Landshut" and "Landeshut" are distinct places, even if their names have a common root. Also, there's no "sh" sound in there - they are compound words of "Land" and "hut", literally "Land's guard". So the "s" and "h" are pronounced separately.
As for "Vogelsdorf", the "v" should probably be pronounced more like an "f".
Also, you switched back and forth between pronouncing "Fouqué" as "fook" and "fookay" - since there's an accent on the "e", the "e" is not mute.

What old art? Often, there were no artworks available (such as for this battle). AI art is not perfect but it certainly allows me to illustrate certain events.
@@HoH The more historical paintings which you used in your previous videos, including commander portraits for the campaign maps.
I think most of us will not find it annoying or strange for you to repeat the use of some paintings to explain a certain situation going on, or the use of ETW, as we all like your content no matter what, but I really think the AI arts sometimes looks out of touch or in the worst cases just silly.
I hope you don't take this as an attack because that's not what I want in any way.
