  • Robo calls rank number one when it comes to consumer headaches but what if you could do more than just block the calls? What if you could get even?

These calls were not allowed on cell phones until 2013. The a bill passed in Congress to allow them. Big problem is when you block a number from them. They call back with a different number. Which means cell phone companies are allowing them to purchase vast amounts of phone numbers. Cell phone providers should be held accountable for this.

They aren’t getting them from cell companies, they are spoofing caller ids. You can block a caller ID but not the true originating number. And they are landlines they call from, usually over seas in India.

First time I was sweet as sugar, sounded fragile, said he sounded like my grandson, my husband would love to buy whatever and said I needed to ask my husband and will call them back the next day. He gave the phone number and turned around and called the FCC to report & file a complaint. The other one I chewed him out, told him he's a despicable person harassing and stealing people's money etc. He hung up so I CALLED HIM BACK, and every time he hung up I call him back till the last time he picked up the phone and said, "leave me alone you focking beech" ... it felt so good to hear that. Agree, they think it more likely you’ll answer if it looks like yours: your area code and first 3, then different, but they’ve hijacked that number from a real person. I called one back in the evening, got a real person who said they hadn’t called me, but we talked about how he was getting the same thing happening and it’s happened the other way too where someone called me asking why I had called them. I hadn’t. It’s not the phone number, it’s the scammers.

They tried that with me that Social Security had problems with my account, I asked the person to give me my social security number and they could not. Did not help that I am receiving current benefits from Social Security!! They will NEVER call you, you might get an email or certified letter in the mail. The same goes for the IRS and Utility companies. If you should get an email it will be simple, it will say please come to the office, however usually it would be a certified letter showing a signature and requiring yours as well. I also state I am a retired law enforcement officer which is completely true, they hang up in seconds. Most of the time I let the call go to voice mail for them to leave a un transcribed message. I then block the number without speaking to anyone. All of the numbers I care to hear from are on my caller ID.

Other numbers are answered by the phone (it doesn't even ring). The phone asks the caller to identify themselves, and if they do, only then does my phone ring and if I answer, the phone announces who the caller is and I press 1 to accept.

i agree but it's imposeible to put in place. These scamming call centers get on the good old phone network using computers on the Internet behing a firewall. They can be anywhere in the world. There's no way to know who they are, where they're from and thus no way to block them. Voice mail and call filter is the only way.

The Do Not Call register is intended to stop legitimate businesses and social researchers from cold calling you. Scammers are criminals: they’re not legitimate and don’t care about following any laws or regulations. The only thing you can do to reduce the number of robocalls you get is to filter all your calls through an answering machine.

A fun way to deal with robocallers.
I answer the phone and say “Hello”. Then the caller responds. I switch to speaking Spanish. They oftentimes put a Spanish person on the phone. Then I switch to speaking mock Chinese and sometimes they try to search for someone who can speak Chinese. Then I speak mock Russian. It’s fun, it ties up their lines and wastes their time. It’s also amusing to people around you who believe you can speak six languages.

@@renzo6490 Most are machines but as soon as a human or your answering machine picks up the call it signals ‘someone answered’ so then a human robocaller comes on. Robocallers are selling for companies. The companies (and all the executives in those companies) that pay robocallers should be severely punished. Robocalling could almost disappear overnight if congress passed extremely strict laws against them. But businesses own almost every officeholder. Until we ban all donations (bribes) to candidates from the rich and corporations we will continue to have these leeches intrude on our lives. Sadly, there are so many morons who have been duped into believing ‘money is free speech’ when it’s nothing of the kind. It’s bribe money to purchase candidates.
I spearheaded a campaign against robocalling in my state. But it’s controlled by republicans. I kept being told that robocalling creates jobs. That is a lie. Like you said they’re machines in an empty room. Republicans believe it’s ok for your life to be constantly intruded upon. A robocall is the same thing as someone throwing a rock through your window with a note wrapped around it. Sadly, republicans and other corporate owned politicians support the rock thrower and to hell with us. It’s disgusting how people can continue to support republicans when they do absolutely nothing to help people.

I like to act timid at first, then as they make their sales pitch, I start to sound interested, almost excited. Use the word yes at increasing intervals. Yes, oooooo yes that sounds delightful. Yes Yes YES!!! DONT HANG UP!!!! IM ALMOST THERE!!!!!
They never stick around for the climax...bunch of teases.
Don’t do this while your out running errands. The post office labeled me a distraction and kicked me out. I’m still not sure if I’m allowed back.

ALWAYS seem to be receptive. ALWAYS be polite. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS waste their time. There are plenty of ways to do that. Take them down a long muddy road that leads them to nowhere. Be creative. Point is, WASTE THEIR VALUABLE TIME.

So I should waste my time to do this? I often hear of people doing this to get back, but never hear about them stopping when they (presumably) quit after realizing they are only losing even more of their time while accomplishing nothing. I suppose getting empty 'revenge' motivates some people.

@@chromolitho So, how long have you been one of these scam callers you seem to symathize with? It's not "empty revenge" at all. No "getting back". They're FRAUDULENT. They're Con Artists who lie & steal money from older people. They should be stopped.

  • @RadioMattM

Where I live, they use spoofed numbers so it would not do anything to call back. They hijack people's real numbers so if you call them back, you are bothering an innocent third party.
Those calls also use recorded voices, so talking to them is a waste of time because there is no one to talk to.

If we get any calls and don't recognize the number or the caller shown on "caller ID" we simply let it ring. They generally don't leave any messages unless it's some crap about being threatened by a computer voice if we don't call them back. We just delete those messages and don't worry about them.

Most often, Robo call businesses use an app to mimic a phone number similar to yours hoping you'll answer. Real people's phone numbers. I would not be happy to be on the receiving end of this guy's revenge, because an app spoofed my phone number as the "caller".

20 minutes later I'll get another call for the same thing.

When my daughter was a toddler I would put her on the phone with the spammer and she would tell them all the stories she knew. It kept her occupied while I got some things done.
Now I just don’t answer unless the caller is in my contacts.

Same here. I don’t remember the last time I took a call that was not in my contacts saved. If they really want to get ahold of you they will leave a voicemail. I just continue forwarding their call on the first ring I get, if I don’t know the number. Then I block said number if no voicemail was left. It’s tedious but seems to thin them out. I stay in Dallas/Fort Worth and most calls I get are from little small Texas towns.

I do that too but it’s sad we have to do that isn’t it? My parents are elderly and answer EVERY call! Actually ran up some large bills with those Jamaica calls. I always say if you don’t recognize the number let it go to voice mail. If it’s important they’ll leave a message.
