  • It was again time for the annual vehicle inspection test - ITV - here in Spain and for me it is always a stressful experience as you never know what they will find wrong with your car or motorbike.

    Over the years I noticed that the ITV testers are often quite prejudiced about certain cars.
    I passed a 20 year old Volvo without any remarks. Now I drive a 12 year old Mercedes and also passed it 2 times without any remarks. But I had many Alfa Romeos and they always continued searching until they found something trivial to complain about.

    for past 12 years, in country where there is lot of snow, best time to do inspection is in winter, with frozen ice blocks all over your car. Tho small oil leaks, here in latvia, is 2 points, which means, you get 1 month sticker, and you have to fix it within a month.

    Just looked at this video Stuart, ours needs doing in December again, we're on annual checks like your girlfriend now and we haven't been over to use it since January!! But thanks for the tip on the oil levels and the diesel particles. We're hoping to be over in January, the car is standing on our drive right now

    I take client's cars in all the time and always get a 'Cita Previa' (appointment), which makes it much quicker.
    Been going to the Málaga Station for nigh on 30 years now, so it tends to run pretty smoothly.
    (They all know me, so there's always some laughs to be had!)
    I aim for the 13:30h to 15:00h 'window' because that's when they change shifts, plus most people are having lunch (or their Siesta) so there's not too many people around.

    Amazing video again. For people like me who loves visiting Spain and has only a superficial understanding about the "real live" in the country quite a bit new information. We have something similar here in New York State (in the US these types of inspections are governed by the state regulations and rules). Here most repair shops are licensed to check the cars for the annual car inspection. If it's a new car it takes just a few minutes and costs 10-15 dollars (I don't think they even check the exhaust, but still formally it's required every year). If it's an older car takes 15-20 minutes of the actual inspection and costs 37 dollars. I only had to worry when I had real mechanical issues with the old car, so could not pass inspection and had to actually repair the car. Washing the car or driving on the highway is never required here.

      As far as I know, as Spaniard, you don't have to wash the car or drive it before getting there. It's not compulsory but very convenient. Regarding driving it for a while, it serves several purposes. Apart from the one mentioned in tge video, another one is to warm your tires. If they are so-so, it helps. And for the dirt, if your lamps are a bit opaque, it doesn't help.
      I've learnt that lesson the hard way. I had to polish one front light and to change the tires. My car is from 2004 too, and the tires were the original ones. That car is very seldom driven, so in other aspects is as good as new.
      Also, if you do not pass the ITV, since you have already payed for it, next time you have to pass it, you do not pay a cent, and only the 'don'ts' are revised. You are given a relatively short period of time to fix the car. During that time you are only allowed to drive the car home from the ITV and back, and to the car repair shop (taller mecánico) or whatever may be the name in English.
      A lot of people, like me, take the car to have a pre-check where we bought it (concesionario), and are warned of the risks (like I was). It was a bingo for the repair man 😊

      ITV stations are Franchised and the computer is all linked up to central so no fiddles.

    My inspection in New Hampshire U.S.A. Took twenty minute waiting time, inspection in May took 1 hr. .23 minutes. Takes garages normally an hour to 1 hr. to 1-3/4 hours to perform inspections. Not only are there no set price on inspection sticker, garages can reject you for anything they deem a safety issue not just what's mandatory by the state. Can be a big pain in the butt!

    It's important to book the ITV which can be done online...it is possible to arrange the date a month before expiry although if it passes you will have 13 months ITV ....it can be a little challenging online ....but achievable, the centre correspond with text message reminders. They may ask for a drivers license depending on the area, beware of this if you have a UK license after Brexit.
    Download N332 App and click yes to daily updates. New European licensing laws are pending N332 have a whole section dedicated to the subject.

    ITV....yes a good burn off in third gear is recommended on the way there. I run my diesel all year round on premium or V Power, this achieves greater performance and fantastic economy 50- 70 mpg in old money, pretty good for 180 BHP 1999cc. No smoke whatsoever.......Alfa Romeo Multijet....a Fiat in a different guise....the more you push it the more she loves it....adorable...😇
    Additives are available to improve last minute emissions but will never improve a leaking turbo....
    Using Euromaster in San Pedro Alacantra consistently has proved invaluable, quick, clean, honest and do not do unnecessary work....15 minutes puncture repair ( warranty pre-pay ) wheel swap back to front, including balance....no charge..brilliant guys highly recommended...
    Finally...thanks for a great video, one of many....and btw...cleaning your coach prior to an ITV, works wonders....nothing but nothing at all puts an inspector in a bad mood more than a filthy car at 0650 in the morning.....its called respect....he or she can change your day in 15 minutes....your wife was totally correct 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Nice video. I would like to ask, is there any other method to test the vehicle's brake system? In Hungary we have different methods: by default we use a rolling brake-testbench, or we can use an istallable deceleration sensoring device. We use a measurement device also to test each shock absorbers in a test-bench, it's called EUSAMA test. Are there any tests like that? Thank you for sharing.

      I've read of problems with the EUSAMA test giving false test failures when in fact the vehicle is in perfect condition. First of all, this test methodology was provided by an organization (European Shock Absorber Manufacturers Association) that you would expect would like to increase the production rate and replacement rate of shock absorbers. It seems like it would be possible they would err on the side of failing a good vehicle instead of being generous and passing some vehicles that have tired/worn shock absorbers. Also this mechanism was designed in the 1970s and the algorithm uses rough road surfaces as a constant in their calculation, this contributes to 'false fails' in testing because roadways are now generally more smooth today and chassis engineers design for roadways today not in 1970. Stiffer tires contribute to these 'false fails' as well, due to thinner tire sidewalls or run-flat technology, it can give signals to the force sensors that it is a bad shock when it is not! Another issue is many cars today have a shorter suspension stroke so the test machine tends to jounce the vehicle wheels much more aggressively than it needs to, leading to false fail readings. Older cars were designed with more suspension travel. Basically the EUSAMA testing needs to be revised for cars with: stiffer sidewalls, thinner sidewalls, short suspension travel, light axle weight vehicles, and revise algorithm for road surface baseline.

    Use diesel cleaner for the last 200km. Just go clean the injectors. Then you get more efficiënt burning...and pass the test.

    Four years for new cars but two years for company and hire cars, so watch out if you buy a second hand hire car. Imported cars changing to Spanish registration can now use up the local national test certificate from their own country, MOT in UK

    I always take my car for a pre Itv to make sure everything is ok. For those who don't want to take their own car for the test there are garages in my area that will do it for you at a small cost.

      In my dad's concesionario (the place were you buy your car first hand), they makw both things, a pre-check and take the car for you.
      He had a VW PASSAT.

      But you have to pay for the pre test right? Why bother just take it in and if they fail it on something you get 30 days to put it right and retest without paying anything extra.

    In Germany it’s called TüV and you have to do it every 2 years but the inspection costs a bit more than a hundred euros and if something little could affect the car in the next 2 years you not going to pass this. So I rather wait more than pay so much

    I prefer the Queensland way just do it once. A year ago I moved to Chile from Australia. Over here in Chile(Revicion tecnica) is once a year (it really sucks)

    If only I watched this video before today! I took my car for its ITV yesterday and had no idea it was this intensive... Especially since I've only been here a few months and my Spanish is horrible and the guy inspecting the car was horrid!!! I got my disc after all that but when trying to stick the sticker having a nightmare.... I removed the old one and it disintegrated but a video of applying the new one would have been helpful as I started the task but gave up after part of the sticker stayed behind.

    Interesting that they check the oil level. Do they do the other fluids? As it's purely a safety check in the UK, they don't care about under the bonnet.

      They can't do the emissions test if the car is overfilled with oil..

      The lever of liquid for brakes and the level of engine coolant is easy to review since the containers are semitransparent.

      Yes they do Terence, in the UK if your washer bottle is not containing liquid you fail and also brake fluid level, but you don't see them checking until you get the fail.

    Is it true that Diesel cars 10 years and older will be banned from Spanish roads? and car insurance companies are currently refusing to insure them?

      Well, there isn't the bann yet. They only restrict such cars from entering the city centers unless they have a permit sticker. I'm in Barcelona, and this is our situation as at now.

    Do you have to stay with the car like you did, or can you have them take it in? I don’t think I would want to witness my car being inspected, but maybe that’s from all the years of being in America...

      Hi, you have to drive the car through for most of the process. They only get in your car for one specific part of the inspection.

    in Finland takes that 10 min. In Estonia 5 min. In Nederland really 3 min. Its my own experience tough. Same EU!!!

      Every country has different rules and surely there are different tests. It's impossible to review rightly a car in 3 or 5 minutes.

    Why do car prices seem so much cheaper in Europe than in the US I look at used cars under $5k on auto scout all the time.

      It's basically because of our economic scale. In Spain, for example, $5k is almost half of the annual salary for most people. It'll equivalent $16k in the USA and imagine that for say a ten year old used car...

      @@soothmusic4319 Your description would be quite accurate for Andulusia for example. Richer areas in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Basque Country, Navarre) still have a messed up economic scale in terms of car demand outside of rural areas of Basque Country and Navarre. So a Basque would have less need for a car even if they have the money for one than an American would and thus car prices remain low. And a person in Madrid may never need a car in their whole life.

      So in the US, we take our vehicles into an automotive shop to get our oil changed and to have the rest of the car looked at to see if it’s all good. There is no annual requirement to follow in regards to being allowed to drive your personal vehicle.

We also take our cars once a year or each x kilometers, what happened the first, to our official brand automotive shop, mainly when it is in warranty. When you finish the warranty you don't have to take the car to the same place but you'll need to change the oil etc... That's what happens everywhere.
      The ITV is an "official" automotive place to review cars approved by the government. You can't pass that check in another place.

      @@TheMorningGlory91 As far as I know, it's the services' legal responsibility to restrain the vehicle from any usage if there is any major failures on it (eg. problems with steering, suspension, braking system or emissions). In here the EU works differently.

      Depends on what state you're in. You are talking about PMS (Periodi cMaintenance) by your dealer. But some states have the DMV Vehicle inspection (only 15 states) example. NY has the annual DMV Vehicle Inspection for (Clean Air Act) your car. Some states have no vehicle inspection at all.

    The ITV system in Spain is an utter nightmare.
    I own classic cars and will soon get both registered as "Historical" vehicles.
    This means i will only have to pass the ITV every 3 years, and it's a much more superficial ITV.

      Actually I find it to be really good and much better than the UK where the garage that does the test can have an interest in failing the car in order to get more work.

      If wheels, brakes, and engine work ok is quite difficult you cause a serious accident. That's what the ITV is for. It isn't to avoid failures.

    I must say its a bit of a rip off, I took a 1 year car from Germany to Spain, and to get spanish
    plates I had to have an ITV, after having the strictest test in the world in Germany TUV test, like the car is 1 year old, could not beleive it 1 year old with a TUV test, Crazy, and German guy who lives in Spain told me, it the way they make money, no rules from the EU, just their own rules, not only that everything is like dodgy, thats why maybe the countries in the North, don`t want to bail out Spain, just like Greece..

      There is nothing rip off about the ITV as they have to check your car complies with the specification on your vehicle documents and nothing has been added or changed from the original, their rules state that it has to be as on your registration documents at all times plus any after market items must be checked and added to the vehicle documents, these rules are for your and other peoples safety protection, i.e. if you have a tow bar it must have a certificate of compliance so it does not come off whilst towing because of faulty fitting.The fault is your if you think it's a rip off because you don't like authority.

      You are registering your car in Spain so German documents are not valid! But agree the cost to register the car in spain is stupid high and it is just money for the government. It cost me around 1200€ to register a 10 year old BMW from the UK, whereas to do the same in the UK would only have cost around £400 the bulk of which would be the road tax!
