How to Upgrade Mongoose Fat Bike Shifter
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- This is a complete installation instruction video for changing the grip shifter to a trigger shifter on a Mongoose. Although this is specifically for Mongoose Hitch fat bike, it will be almost completely the same for any newer mongoose using a 7 speed drivetrain with a grip shifter. I also go through a quick demonstration of how to adjust the derailleur once the new shifter is installed.

Duuuuuuude..... no way! I just successfully installed my gear shifter. all just by watching your video. this is awesome. thank you!!
I have a not-so-gently used Mongoose Dolomite (gift from my wife who knew I wanted a "starter fat bike" to try in the snow, since I get tired of Zwift for road-bike winter withdrawal). It managed the local bike trails snow, but the shifter only worked well one direction! Syl-glide on the gearshift and exposed cabling didn't help much, so I was pleased to find your video on this upgrade. I used an M315 and didn't even have adjust the limiters or barrel after swapping over! It shifts so much better now - wish I had done it last year! (I'm sure you've seen the complaints about low audio levels in this video - they're low, but everything is audible if you turn it up enough!)
I literally learnt how to fix my derailleur and switch my gf now tbeir both running great thanks a bunch bud 👍🏽 😊
Thanks for the video, it inspired me to change out the grip shifter on my wife's bike. Placed the order on a rapid fire yesterday. ✌
Noel Del Real I'm happy to share! Your wife is going to love the rapid fire over that twisty!
Great vid! should be very helpful when I get mine in Wednesday.
Excellent informative video. I didn’t see you adjusting the “L” Low adjustment screw
Great video my wife and daughter got me a Mongoose Malus and just turned 50 years of age. Am ready to get some miles in. I just put an order in for my shifter. My hand is always hitting the gear switch accidentally hitting it and I hate that because am not a little guy. When am standing up peddling with my weight pushing down getting speed up it switches when I least expected and that SUCKS !
A bit of solder will keep the cable ends from fraying...but not everyone has a soldering iron. Great vid, BTW...I just bought a Mongoose Malus :)
First Name Last Name I use heat shrink works very well.
Glad I saw this
I have two soldering guns
I really like your bike man. Im new to the scene and have had my eyes set on this bike for a little while. My wife gave me the limit of $350 to spend on a bike.
So far, Amazon has made things look promising. I can get the bike, rapid fire shifter, grips, hydraulic brake setup front and rear, new seat and new pedals for $346. Im hoping this payday to order it all ☺️
Grow a pair. You're a grown man needing permission from someone to get what you want. Simp
@@rcfreaks6281 ik you did not just call the man a simp for respecting his WIFE'S opinion of having a budget for a bike. Get a life...
Very helpful video. Thanks for the details!
Awesome channel bro! I have a mongoose malus just ordered geares hub motor eat kit for it.
Great video though this with the handle bars I have done, the crank set is something I am interested in changing I have this same bike so can you do a video on changing the crank? Thanks again!!
good show, learned alot. thanks
your channel is really helpful to me please can you make a video on front tyre axle remove and services
Thanks for the video, I just got my bike and i hate the stock shifter.
Hi mate have you done a video on how to change out upgrade the bottom bracket and crank set cheers
What if you want this shifter on the left side?
I researched and cannot find a 7speed left hand shifter. Is there a fix or work around? Thank great videos..👊
Did you upgrade your freewheel and chainring?
Great video. Very informative.
Is there a specific site for mongoose parts?
Assuming you do this with gear cables in decent working order you don't need to remove the entire cable. The cable can be removed from the grip shifter side on most, if not all, shifters.
Thanks for the video. How was the stock rear derailleur? Did you ever feel the need to replace that also?
Very informative and it helped me out tremendously thanks
Love these videos..
Log Home thank you! I just pulled up to a local trail, so I'll be able to capture some riding footage on the Hitch!
can you show me how to change shift cable of Mongoose Terrex bike or disassemble shifter of shift cable
What brand shifter did you go with?
You should put a Shimano megarange on that. Mongoose Fat Tire Bike There's even an 8 speed Freewheel. You can buy think it's made by falcon. I did that to an old. Department store mountain bike I had and just change the shifter to a Shimano 8 speed shifter and I put that 8-speed Falken Freewheel. It was zinc-plated to it was actually a pretty nice looking free will look like except.
Another trick to get ur grips off if they are being stubborn is to use an air compressor and stick the end just under the edge of the grip and it should work its way right off
Raymond Fitzwater great tip! I'll have to give this a try.
Compressed air in a can works too, if you don't have an air compressor. That's what I used.
Volume?
There's nothing wrong with a properly operating grip shifter... it's a preference thing. When adding a dropper seatpost, a grip shifter is advantageous since there won't be a space conflict!
See the Park Tools videos for the "more correct" method to adjust the rear derailleur. ua-cam.com/video/UkZxPIZ1ngY/v-deo.html
Currently unavailable at amazon.
found it on ebay
What brand and model is the shifter?
Which shifters did you buy?
chadaaron I used the Shimano SL-M310 rapid fire.
Thanks for the reply. I must be having bad luck this month. Just bought the sl m310 rapid fire and it doesn't shift. I'm returning and I guess buying the same one. Most reviews had no problems so maybe I just got a bad one.
chadaaron Hey, did you get a shimano SL-M310 put on? I'm going after one and was curious how it worked out you. I would greatly appreciate your advice!
Why not use original cable? They are removable from shifter.
Pretty sure dolomite fucked me over cuz the set screw on my shifter just stripped three Allen wrenches back to back lol. Sick. Need a new shifter and handlebars I guess :)))
Shifters are that cheap? Why have I been killing my palms on these crap grip shifts? x.x
You said it was easy and now I have my derailleur all over the floor in disrepair like wtf
I know I can do this twist shifters could a bad rap for me because what if you have to shift and Brake at the same time impossible I believe Schramm mixer model where this is possible let me get back to the video
I know this is an old video but does anyone have the stock shifter available?
Yes
Where do u find them Nick?
My park bike stand works a lot better
Good visual but I can barely hear you. Waiting on my shifter now. Bought the bike a couple weeks ago and hate the current shifter. It just caused me to brake my chain going uphill when i bumped it...
Audio is terrible
