    Our Master of Microscopes James was fascinated by something he found in some samples he had been given from Portugal. Something that would lead us to a kraken in the microcosmos…but how?

    Amoeba -> kraken
    Fly -> titanopteryx
    Sometimes, it's just funny to name a tiny thing after a giant thing.

    The Kraken's filaments remind me of mycelium, I wonder how related those are to fungus, probably just convergent evolution because it really looks just like mycelium filaments going out and exploring and feeding. So amazing.

    I always find it strange when you say that Kraken are mythological, when at least in German it's just a name for certain types of very much real cephalopod. Also isn't the mythological one a gigantic squid, not octopodes? Which not like they don't exist either. Maybe sailor's superstitions made them a bit more gigantic, and a lot more likely to attack ships. Humans probably have more to fear from a swarm of humboldt squid. More likely to meet and more aggressive too.

    • @shadow81818
      @shadow81818 20 днів тому +3

      That's a scale bar! It gives us humans a reference to the size of the things on screen, and in this case, that line measures 30 micrometers (that u symbol is the greek letter mu, which is used as the abbreviation for the prefix micro-), so it's 30 millionths of a meter across.

  • @afxtw1n
    @afxtw1n 20 днів тому

    Ok, but,... Why, Hank? WHY?!
    Where does the pseudopod's external material come from? Is there a limited amount of membrane to spread around? Is there a slurry of ingredients floating around that makes it on the fly? Is it just a reaction because some chemical signal is stronger in that direction so it kinda bends like phototropic plants? Does the cell itself "know" something that sends more resources in one direction while still keeping another area searching? What part of the cell actually decides which direction to send a tendril of this kraken? At what point do we find the OG algorithms? Viruses seem to have gone c+, but this thing is DOS, at least. Humans are barely multicore processing... AI is blowing past us, but it still doesn't seem to be able to explain why these bags of pre-programmed lego bricks keeps surprising us.... I'm just a bag of programs, aren't I? ok... "why am I?"
    Questions: logged.
    Hank, so you've answered many of the questions I've had, and most of the ones I didn't know to ask... now I have 10x more. 40 yrs of researching questions, mostly my own, and I want to know WHAT TO ASK NEXT. I like finding answers, but I've really had to hone my asking skills, just to find more questions to ask/answer...
    Guess there's no real question there... now where are my answers?
