  • The House of Skulltula from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has forever been one of the creepiest parts of the entire game-- since it is a house filled with a family of cursed half-human, half-spider abominations, after all. In the years since the game's release, there have been no shortage of theories and guesses regarding the family's curse; but what about who cursed them to begin with? Join me as we discuss in this year's Halloween special!

      probably thinking of Camel Spiders (AKA Sun Spiders or Solifugae). They're a mix between Scorpions and Spiders, an order of their own under the Arachnida class. But even if they were full on spiders they aren't close to the largest spiders, which is the South American Goliath Birdeater. Camel Spiders are a couple(2-3) inches large with long bodies where-as the goliath spider looks like someone just scaled up a normal looking spider, at 4.75~ inches tall and legs that can reach out roughly 12 inches.

    The Spider Demon theory in interesting. I feel that the Skulltula curse is actually is not a twisted wish, but a punishment from the demon, or whatever it is. If the family is as greedy as you say, then they could have tried to swindle something from the Spider Demon.

  • @Buphido

    I think it’s secret option C, "an unknown being". Neither "poes" nor "Hateno statue" strike me as convincing, and a forced conclusion based only on characters we know is not beneficial in any way. Though it might be another character we know but just can’t think of right now.
    I think poes is unlikely for the same reasons you listed; because the OoT curse required the killing of golden Skulltulas. It just feels forced. And the "Hateno statue" isn’t any better, as the statue not only doesn’t do dirty deals with Link but also flat out denies Link of using its services if doing so would weaken him beyond three hearts and a standard stamina wheel. I think the statue is a chaotic being that likes messing with people and making bank by tricking people into using its services, but I don’t think it’s malicious. It‘d be another thing if you could die by trading away more of your health or stamina than you start with, but sadly that isn’t the case.

    One thing that intrigues me about this theory is that one very specific party was not brought up as a possibility: The Shiekah themselves.
    We've already established that the Stone of Agony is accepted as a pairing to the Lens of Truth, a Shiekah artifact, so for it to have come into the possession of this family means one of two things:
    - They bartered for it
    Or more likely...
    - They stole it
    We know well that the Shiekah are more than capable of accessing darker magics, it's sort of their thing. Would it be so out-of-reach to believe that the Shiekah could've tracked them down and cursed them for their greed?
    That might leave the question, why does the family still have the stone then, why didn't the Shiekah take it back? A possible answer is that they left it with them to remind them of what their greed had earned them, and the cost of their curse. Perhaps to give them a chance to redeem themselves and gift it to someone willing to break their curse, if they could hope to find someone like that. Who would be brave and kind enough to see them and want to help them, after all?

    • @ShadowSora8491
      @ShadowSora8491 3 роки тому +3

      There is another theory that the grottos are shelters that various inhabitants of Hyrule had set up during the war that claimed the lives of Link's parents, the family was using the stone/shard of agony to track down other people's shelters and steal their rupees that they were keeping in their shelters.
      I think that other theory supports your theory that the Shiekah, themselves, may have placed the curse upon the family. Whether the family bartered for, or stole the stone/shard of agony, they were probably punished by the Shiekah for misusing their artifact to rob innocent people who were just trying to take shelter and survive the war.

    The father of the group literally said they were like that because of the “Spider’s curse”, which would lead you to believe that it was some sort of spider that cursed them. If it was something else, you would think the wording would have just been “spider curse”, but he gave it a possessive intonation from (possibly) an actual spider.

    There is another option. The Zelda universe already has a being of pure greed.
    Uncle Rupee.
    In the really weird japanese only spinoff Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, Uncle Rupee is a deity who makes a deal with the lead, he turns him into a tingle and gets him to do services for him all with the promise of unlimited wealth. You find out in the end of the game that his deal is a lie and had you completed your end he would have turned you into a slave in his little world.
    This isn't that different from the deals brokered with Giovanni or the spider house. Offers of unlimited wealth that ultimately resulted in a ghastly changed form.

    I actually find spiders kinda cool. Yes, they’re disgusting, and I‘d run for dear life if I saw a spider even only as long as my pinky, but they’re still kinda cool; because spiders are THE symbol of power, fear and cruelty in their weight class.
    Spiders are the sharks of their surroundings. Sure, there is the occasional bird or lizard who is having a feast, and even other insects or spiders, but generally, like sharks, spiders are the top predator in their environment. Which is also why, if you scale them up to massive sizes, they are so imposing; A giant fly or giant ant are not nearly as imposing as a giant spider, as with a giant spider you can immediately tell that it considers everything smaller than itself, which includes you, as prey.

I like the whole 'overcoming fear' idea, but surely saving or helping the spiders is more of an overcoming deed than just killing them bcuz of fear. I think there's hope for spiders in future Zeldas, but I'm still disappointed at the weird skulltulla quest in MM and oot. Your voice sent chills down my spine. Good video man. I think the golden skulltuala might work best since the family is greedy, so they probably heard of the golden skulltula, stole a picture, then moved to kakariko to find it. As for Jovani, it's probably the demon statue, since there's nothing about a skulltula in Jovani's case, and why would the family turn to skulltula while he was made into a statue?

    I think the demon idea would be the most interesting but I think the golden spider theory is more likely. It would be really cool if they were all connected but I'm not sure there is enough evidence to say that they're related so I'm thinking Poes and the demon are less likely ideas.

  • @benhuckaby
    @benhuckaby 3 роки тому +1

    I think the Golden Skulltula possibility is the most likely, simply by wording that the father says, "the Spider's curse" not the spider curse, its possessive, its proper, a curse by a specific spider, which I think lends credibility to the skulltula picture on the wall.

  • @DiegoDerSchatten
    @DiegoDerSchatten 3 роки тому +1

    Maybe the golden Skulltula isn't a being but an object. The golden spider picture 9:02 could be an artefact, which the family raided (maybe even from the Sheikah?), which burdens a curse and a blessing. Whatever the skull of the golden Skulltulas touches will turn into gold.
    The family touched various objects with the skull and hoarded the golden objects, like rocks, chairs, tables and so on in their house, so they piled their actual furniture to have more room. The blessing is to turn everything the spiders skull touches into gold.
    But if you use the spider artefact for exactly 100 times, it turns everything it changed to gold into a golden skulltula spider. The golden chair, table, rock and everything else changes its form into a spider, fleeing across the world.
    Now everyone tried to turn something into gold but the father was the most greediest, turning more then 50 objects into gold just for the sake of it. The golden spider artefact started shining and turned everyone who used it into a spider, maybe vanishing after that, maybe returning to its original place where it got stolen? Or maybe getting stored at a secret place in the house?
    After releasing the curse this time the family will be more cautious to not get cursed again. After all they know how the curse works now, right?

    Just sticking with Ocarina of Time here, not the remake with the added picture, I always chalked their curse up to them grave robbing from the Sheikah. That's why the Stone of Agony was in their possession. They were treasure hunters and businessmen. They could never get enough. They just kept searching for relics and valuables. Until they found Kakariko Village and started grave robbing from them. One day they took a little too much, and were cursed by the dark magic that still exists in that area.
    On a separate note, I have always seen a resemblance between the rich family and the Happy Mask Salesman. Maybe there is a family connection through a side branch of the family, but the Salesman seems to be in the same kind of business as the rich family. He collects masks and seeks unusual magical powers such as the Song of Healing. He also managed to find Majora's Mask, which is said to be from a clan of dark magic users, which I always understood to be a reference to the Sheikah. I'm not saying Majora's Mask cursed the family, because I don't see anyone wielding it for that purpose before Ocarina of Time. Rather I see them being cursed by the same dark power that Majora's Mask was able to harness. Both dark magics are from the Sheikah, or at least it's the same dark magic that the Sheikah dabbled in.
    There are other types of curses. Link can be cursed to the point where he cannot wield his sword. Link was also cursed to take the form of a Deku Scrub. Zelda I was cursed to sleep forever, and only the Triforce parts were powerful enough to break it. Ganondorf cursed the Deku Tree, Jabu Jabu, and Zora's Domain. The potion shop hag makes a medicine out of a forest mushroom that she believes will sustain the creepy guy in the Lost Woods. So it is likely that those who don't know how to defend against dark magic or are susceptible to it through their own dark impulses will end up cursed by it if exposed to places or things where such magic exists. Like Pamela's Father.

    In Majora's Mask, is the swamp spider house. The mask of Truth was hidden in it and cursed. Considering who made the mask, I'm inclined to believe the sheikah probably had some hand in the curse of both games. Hell, even in Twilight Princess. We know from sharp and flat that sheikah can become Poe after death. And we know from breath of the Wild that there are some who aren't exactly upstanding citizens

    My theory is that the family were worshiping a demon, stealing, using dark magic, and Hylia just got fed up with it and created her own kind of demon that she could control. She promised them riches beyond their wildest dreams, and when they agreed, she made them look like the disgusting things they were becoming. She blurred the memories that the residents had of them, not erasing them, just making it so that they couldn't remember their names, yada yada. So Link could find them one day. She left the spider picture, so they family could be reminded of what they had become.

    probably found a gold skulltula, the very first OG one, and wanted to capture it since it was solid gold. So... here's my thoughts.
    First off, I wonder if their greed took the form of them not being theives exactly, but not helping when they had the means to. They had wealth and people who could help build or defend the village, but maybe they simply refused to help, thinking that their wealth made them above such things. They didn't want to share what they had.
    I wonder if it's similar to a Beauty and the Beast sort of story, where in order to break the curse, they must kill the 100 golden skultulas. But, because of their cursed forms, they can't go out and search for the spiders themselves without the risk of being attacked by heroes, guards and frightened villagers. And because they refused to help others, they're cursed to try to ask others for help but will be refused because of their monsterous forms. People who knew them before their transformations might not help in fear of a monster's trick.
    Until Link shows up. The key to breaking their curse isn't wealth or riches or fortune, but tapping into their humanity. Reaching out and asking for help. And at the end, they do end up giving their wealth away in gratitude for Link saving them.

The intro starts with what looks like a light at the end of a tunnel, and Zelda telling Link to wake up.
