Too Old To Be A Dad?

- MamaNatural.com 🔅 While it's true that men can father children into their 70's or even 80's, there hasn't been much research about the health of these children, until recently.
Turns out, just when women enter the high risk category at 35 years of age, same with men. At this age, they start to develop issues with their sperm that can affect the offspring's health.
For example, in men over 40, there's almost a six-fold increase in autism disorders in their children compared with men under 25.
For men in their 50s, there's a three-fold increase in schizophrenia when compared with men under 20. And there's a direct increase associated with age. The older the man, the higher the risk of schizophrenia in his offspring.
In terms of Down Syndrome, if the mother is under 35 years old, the sperm doesn't have as much of an impact but if the women is over 35 and the man is over 35 this changes the equation and increases the odds.
Women are born with all of their eggs at birth. Men, on the other hand, are constantly renewing their sperm. On one hand, we think this is good because the sperm is fresh, but it also is more representative of the male's age and as he gets older, you see more defects and mutations and odd shaped sperm. In other words, the older you are, the more sperm cells have divided and the more chance for disorders to occur.
I had Griffin when I was 35 and Mike was almost 38. We are working on number 2 and I'm now 37 and Mike is 40. While I loved having kids later because I was able to do so much and travel and work and explore, I also think it's harder physically. In my 20's, I could pull all nighters, no problem. In my thirties, not so much.
The demands of a newborn all the way to chasing around a toddler are tougher when you've got some years under your belt. I'm gonna tell my kids, have your children in your late twenties. That way you've had some life, you have some wisdom, but you also have your youth.

I was born when my dad was 45 year's old 🙂 and my younger sister when he was 51 still we both are healthy and normal
Yhanks tha t s a blessing to hear that im 40.
Of course
What she is saying is based on studies, but the problem is that there are many flaws with the (similar) design of all those studies.
Im 42 years old with a woman who's 40, and were considering having children. My Father had kids in his forties as well I think our whole family's like that.
Go for it
Covid really screwed me. I've been looking for the right partner to have a family with since I was 30 in 2020. I'm 34 now, I did date two women that were not open to having children so I ended things.
Now I'm getting nervous will never meet someone. And it's my biggest dream to be a dad.
Same here (but I'm a woman), but just live healthily and you've still got ten years most likely, be outside in nature :) It will probably work out for you
Going through this situation unfortunately right now, I'm 42yrs old still single unfortunately and no kids of my own. It's been scaring me a lot lately.
@@GigoloAuntYou can even have 20-30 more years or you could have been impotent already 4 years ago, it all depends on your lifestyle
@@PeterSchneemann I wouldn't risk waiting 30 more years as he'll be having so many genetic mutations by then (we all do) that the child is unlikely to be healthy even if it appears so initially
Hopefully with technology maybe we can find ways to test mens reproductive health before trying to have a child?
Im 18 and my dad is 58. He has a 5 year old daughter, the old bastard 😂
Old man gets around lol
Your sweet spot may apply to Latin Americans like you, but there are other cultures, where people are more career-oriented at that age.
I think we men need to be healthier as far as diet and exercise.
There you go!
I'm having kids in my 50s and 60s
As a man you can do that DEFINATELY. 😊😊
@@daniella8400 why'd you say that ?
@@daniella8400he can die at 80 and his son/daughter would be 30. That's a fine time you had with your children.
I seen a lot of couples younger having kids with different disabilities. What would that be .
Disablity is caused by genetic mutation, the perfect time for having baby is prime age like 19 yrs old woman and 22 yr old man they are in their prime yrs, but people waste their time finding so called soul mate and rich guys and things like that bruh, in old time they do child marriage and arrange marriage system, in this system you got kids in your 20s when you become 40 they will become 20 and when you become 60 they still are in their mid 40 not a very long distance generation gap and youll be able to see your great grand child, but nowadays people just marry late age 😂😂
@@Resident579 yep. As time goes on, we are realizing our ancestors didn't do what they did for nothing.
well, the health risks are minimal, not to say tiny, if parents are younger. However, saying the health risks are for example 100% higher if the parents are older means maybe double the risk of almost zero, and this will be still a very very low risk. 100% sounds huge but is only a tiny little increase of the total risk
Absolutely correct!!
this was a great video. I'm turning 40 this weekend and my younger sister just had a healthy baby last week, so it made me wonder what being a dad over 40 could be like. Also, Charlie Chaplin, Wow! I had no idea.
Because you have not read the bible
Thanks
Great vid
This is so depressing, I will never get to have kids off my own :(
Don’t be discouraged
I’m 48m and became a father 7 days ago to a handsome boy
8.6lb 22inch height top percentile and is very healthy. He is amazing.
@@sl2851 Congrats! I am very happy for you and it makes me feel hopeful, however...
I wasn't born healthy because my parents were in their 40's when I was conceived. I had physical handicap that led to being bullied from K to 12.
@@OGtruthserum people that bully people in general no matter what a persons capabilities are are weak minded people. You sound like a respectful sincere person. Take it day by day.. and live your life the way you wish. You will do or already may have done great things. Keep your head up.
And thank you
@@sl2851 I have already done great things for other, but I just lost too much in my own life. The girls I should have been with are gone. The life I could have once had is merely a memory.
That would be genes of the man. I see it a lot more now younger
Copium! The wall remains undefeated!
You're never too old
Unless you want a child with autism, dwarfism, downs etc.. Which is what happens when old men have kids with their dna mutated as we all get with age
@@GigoloAunt that doesn't happen with older men so you are sadly mistaken.
@@blacklyfe5543 It sure does, it's estimated older fathers are responsible for a higher incidence of birth defects and disorders than women. It's because it happens due to mutations on the dna which doesn't discriminate in males or females we get it equally unfortunately. As mens telomeres get longer with age we see a much higher incidence of mutations (I work in medical research). Many people just haven't caught up with it yet as women are still blamed and investigated for any issue with the child and we haven't been questioning mens role in this until recently. I suspect it has to do with many men believing women somehow age faster than men which enables them to go after younger women(making it more socially accepted), but as we're seeing fertility is as much a man's issue as womens, the only difference is the child is birthed by the woman but most defects happen at the time of conceiving where it gets half its dna from the dad
@@GigoloAunt having kids later in life brings more pros than cons.
@@blacklyfe5543 Yeah I see that you just gotta be careful not to leave it too late that's all I'm saying
It’s definitely true that there is a higher risk of mutations in older males, but the increased risk translates to a very tiny overall risk to the child. Such that older men/women shouldn’t be concerned.
There was a recent article by a fertility expert who said the real risks are with 50+ yo men, and even then the risks are low overall, and he had a kid after 50.
There is a need by feminists to graft a biological clock onto men, to try and say they shouldnt father children later, as women are unable to. The truth is that they can do it.
Most men aren’t having children later anyway. But there is a push to try to push middle aged men away from women ten years younger, to give the older women more of a chance
They do this by as a group distorting the scientific literature on the topics, to give women more power as a group
I do not agree with feminist ideology. However, I am realizing that the women I know who date older men, their children have some form of autism and or a speech delay or speech issue. My friend dates a guy old enough to be her father. She has 4 children with him. Every last one of them have some type of speech or behavioral issue. I also met a woman who has a 7yr old daughter with autism but she high functioning. Her dad bought her to dance class yesterday and it was my 1st time seeing him. He is definitely older than the mother. I’m seeing this as a issue as of lately. I’m just here for study purposes. It is none of my business but definitely interesting.
@@intentionalparenting2605That's interesting, do you mind telling me what those father's ages are? I'm thinking of having kids at 40 am I safe?
@@JC-fx3whYou should definitely be safe at 40 as long as you haven't led a really rough life
@@JC-fx3whI'm a woman and Im hoping to have one at around 45. But I've lead an exceptionally healthy life I guess, no partying ever
The odds of having an autistic child is less than 2%. For you men in your 40s this means your odds are about 10-12% based on the numbers she’s suggesting. That said, this would also mean there’s a ~90% chance your child will be perfectly healthy. As a new father in my 40’s, the most important advice I could give you, is take your personal health, diet and exercise serious. The greatest risk to the child with older fathers is the fathers health. Cheers.
10-12% is a very high risk though. And that's just autism, there's also y chrom disorders like muscle dystrophy, cerebral palsy, downs, lowered iq risk
Would you take a 10-12% chance of being randomly struck by lightning? Lol
27 is ridiculously young like I feel like even though this video is really nice and it’s well-meaning it’s still very disconnected of what it is actually like to be in your 20s now. I’m 24 I am a baby adult like I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing and if you told me in two or three years I would have a child I would literally off myself and I’m pretty sure most women would today
Moreover why are you acting as if like 30s is it young or youthful because you’re not old like you’re literally classified as a young adult
Edit: I realize this was made 10 years ago no wonder this seems so out of touch and out of date
There are literal child soldiers. I'll think you'll be ok.
34 male here, I’ve always been told “you have plenty of time” but now I’m starting to worry
It's still a low percentage compared to women. Just be healthy and avoid toxic food.
I know four parents with disabled kids, autism, downs syndrome. In all four cases the woman was like 28, no mutated DNA to speak of at that age, but the fathers were 50ish and rich. Still got blamed on the women! Unbelievable. People know so little about telomeres etc
I'm saying this so old men don't take unecessary risk and cause harm to a child through not knowing about it
Yo man you are still young just don't be stressed out, even 51 yrs guys can be dad
@@Resident579 My moms friend just gave birth to a child at 51 recently, naturally conceived. The dad was 50
