- Iceberg tiers are a popular internet phenomenon in which degrees of knowledge of a particular subject are conveyed with an iceberg, in which the most commonly well-known titbits are at the top as “the tip of the iceberg”, and way down in the depths are the conspiracy theories and information which may have been supressed or covered up. These have been made for a variety of different topics, and so naturally Formula 1 is one of them. There are a few different ones going around, but I’m going to use this one from Reddit. As you can see, there is quite a lot here, ranging from your everyday meme material at the top to the deepest darkest depths of F1 Twitter at the bottom. You know me, I’m going to do this properly and go through every single one of these statements. So, buckle up, because this could take a while.

In Spain we have a "theory" that since Alonso crash in 2015 pre-season, he still thinks is a rookie, they told him who he was, and that's why he's still so fast at his age
He said " I'm Fernando Alonso and I race carts, I hope one day I can make it to F1" when the doctors asked him who he was. Pretty creepy but I don't believe it. It probably was like that just for the moment
I think that's wrong cuz he still hates Hamilton 😂

A theory of mine is that Seb never got covid at the start of the 2022 season, he just didn't want to race in countries with poor human rights, as he is a known activist of this.

I thnk the rumor about Mick being Ralfs son stems from the perception of their driving styles being quite similar. But that makes sense since Micheal would not have been able to much influence his sons carrer due to his disabling injury from 2013, with Mick being just 14 at the time, and had yet to race more then carts. Thus his next most logical mentor for his F1-precursor years: his uncle

I'm pretty sure Kvyat being the best driver on the grid is based entirely on him beating Ricciardo in 2015. This is used to infer that much like Daniel he would beat Vettel (2014) and Verstappen (2016-17), you could use the latter to say he's even better than Hamilton based on 2021, as insane as you'd sound. GOAT candidate.
Kvyat is a good driver aswell, I would say he is the best Eastern European/Slav (after Kubica, of course), that I remember, underrated IMO.
When MMA maths leaks into F1
I just think that kicking Kvyat out was a mistake. He was improving a lot in his last year, trying everything he had and in the end it didn't matter. Such a shame.

For me, Bianchi's fatal accident is an 'iceberg'. Although a report on the course of events was published, Bianchi's accident is treated by Formula 1 as a complete taboo topic. For example, while the accidents of Senna and Hubert are repeatedly mentioned, this is not the case with Bianchi. Since apart from the mobile phone video and two pictures there are no published recordings of the accident and this is poorly documented for the public, I can't shake the feeling that something about the accident is being deliberately kept secret.
it was a clear mistake by the FIA in that situation, compared toSenna and Hubert incidents. They would want to cover it up since they were at fault

@@mrbeschissen6690 I do agree that it is likely that since it is the FIA's fault they wouldn't want to talk about it much but there is always so much talk about the halo, practically the final gift Bianchi gave to F1. That IMO is honoring Bianchi's death much more than talking about the tragic circumstance ever would.
They avoid it because it was entirely the FIAs fault
The video of his crash was evidence enough. It didnt need a big public thing. The tractor was on the track at a damgerous time and he drove fast to catch up to the rest of the field. There isnt much else to it. They changed the rules to solve those issues shortly after.
All entirely legal within the rules the FIA made. So they knew it was their fault. What his death did for the sport was bring in the halo(which i dont think would have saved him i.m.o) which has gone on to save many people since.

To be honest, I feel more sorry for the person that hit him. Just going about your business and someone intentionally walks in front of your vehicle. Could've killed the driver and I'd imagine they'd have PTSD, too.

I think from what I read it wasn't suicide, but he apparently crossed the road like a normal pedestrian and a truck just hit him, but that's a theory and the circumstances are still unknown

Got a conspiracy theory of my own: Hamilton never had a gearbox problem at the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix. He was told by McLaren to give up the title so they wouldn’t be remembered as the spy gate champions.
Nah it's Formula 1. If they could have won it, they absolutely would have. It's not like teams and drivers haven't won in dubious circumstances before...

There is definitely something to Hamilton's lost rookie championship in 2007. He was once interviewed about it a few years after it had happened and he said something among the lines "i didn't know what happened the, but i know now. It's not something i can discuss." You can find evidence of this from THE RACE's video about Hamilton's lost championship of 2007.

I’d imagine the Ralf is the faster Schumacher comes from a WTF1 video where they discuss the most unrealistic times when teammate comparisons prove certain drivers were quicker than others.

Ralf was actually a really good driver, JP Montoya says that ralf was the quickest team mate he ever had, and he had a really hard time at williams at first because of him. I'm not saying he was faster than michael, but he wasn't bad at all

DAS wasnt banned next race because when Mercedes came to the FIA with the DAS idea they said no because it was activated with a button. The FIA told Mercedes that it was legal so long it was done purely mechanically through driver input, thinking that Mercedes would never figure it out, they did. If the FIA wanted to ban it immediately, Mercedes could protest, saying that it was made legal by the FIA themselves.
i feel like people act like the FIA intentionally make rules that favour merc, when in reality merc are just really good at finding loopholes in the rules, something any good sports team does
@@ltbq Mercedes is such a compulsive finder of loopholes that when the present Ross Brawn regulations left a development dead end in them in the shape of a sidepod-less design, they just _had_ to go for it. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes after the break ends, because with a lift in minimum ride height and the banning of that floor flexibility, Mercedes isn't going to have many good ways to lean into ground-effect that can offset the loss by not being able to work sidepods like wings. xD

@@ltbq I mean there's the fact that Mercedes heavily lobbied for the V6T engines that they just so happens to have been developing for several years.
@@ltbq Same as Red Bull in their winning streaks, and both likely a similar reason for their wins and their notoriety: People care a lot more about a front running, dominant team using questionable designs than just another midfield team
For Tier 8 Leclerc's sacrifices of it being a coincidence is not that plausible because it's human nature to work unbelievably harder when someone close to you is either struggling or not here anymore. I believe Leclerc just has spurts of motivation to dedicate whatever award to the people he is close with that are still living or gone
Edit: Leclerc is my favorite driver and not only does he use his motivation but he keeps that momentum very well. He is Human like us and he can crack but when he doesn't he shines like a star and he is on his way to reach a World Title

I think it means that, beside everyone telling him to leaving Ferrari if he want to really have a chance to be world champion, he still want to stay and win with them. But not for himself or Ferrari, he wants to win for Jules and his father
One thing you forgot to note about the “fernando is faster than you” moment is that Ferrari spent a good few laps before that telling massa to pick up the pace but massa didn’t. It’s in the season review and is a very interesting perspective
I’m also convinced that if any non Toyota Michelin car had taken part in Indy 2005 they would have finished just fine but there you go
@@Woody93185 some would’ve but some wouldn’t, the sidewall integrity was sketchy and that was not a question at all. So FIA did the right thing by not allowing them to race. But they should’ve just called off the race and they didn’t, that hurt f1 in the US for a decade and more

Malaysia 2017 - Vettel illegally completed the race in Kimi's car, with Kimi going to the grid in Seb's car and the team knowing that he would never be allowed to start that race:
Following the double Ferrari crash in Singapore two weeks prior, which saw Hamilton extend his championship lead significantly over Vettel (having only taken the overall lead in Italy the round before), Ferrari knew that they needed to prioritise Vettel moving forward if they were to have any chance to turn the tide on a championship that was slipping away. A new engine was put in Seb's car for the weekend, however unbeknownst to Ferrari this unit had some major issues, which became apparent in qualifying. Seb was unable to set a qualifying time due to these issues, however Kimi's car was working well with him able to set the second fastest time. In order to not break curfew while trying to diagnose the issue, as well as risking not being able to fix the issue anyway as, Ferrari decide to switch the cars. Vettel is told of this plan, Kimi is not. In direct contravention of the rules, the mechanics switch over the seats, steering wheels and adjusted the pedals of each car to each drivers requirement, as well as the decals showing the driver numbers.
Race day - Vettel is at the back of the grid in Kimi's car. The mission: overtake as many cars as possible and minimise the haemorrhaging of points to Hamilton for the second race in a row, in a championship fight that up until this point has been extremely close. Kimi is unaware that he is driving Seb's car with a compromised engine. During the warm up lap Kimi notices that he has power issues and informs the team. They tell him to pull onto the grid to see if they can fix it there in line with standard procedure. The team comes and does a performative exercise pretending to look to fix the car when they know full well this car is not going to be allowed to race, as they cannot risk the FIA scrutineering the vehicle and uncovering the ploy. Quickly the car is then wheeled off the track - this thing needs to be out of sight and out of mind. Kimi does not start the race.
Vettel starts the race and fights back admirably ultimately finishing fourth. Luckily for him and Ferrari, Verstappen has given himself the ultimate late birthday present one day after turning 20 and has driven the wheels off his Red Bull to secure victory over Hamilton, after passing him on lap 4. Overall the outcome is pretty good - only six points lost to Hamilton at a weekend that looked like it might be much, much worse. Only one last problem: how to get the car back to the pits without anyone from the FIA getting a close look at it? Ferrari knows there is only one way to do that and that is on the back of a tow truck. As Vettel drives the cool down lap he spots Lance Stoll ahead of him. Lance is on the inside so Vettel goes around him in a clumsy manner, making sure to hit his rear tyres in a way that ensures damage to his rear axel, making it impossible to limp back to the pits. The car is parked on the side of the circuit and while Vettel jumps onto Wehrlein's car to wave at the crowd, distracting everyone from looking into the bizarre event that just unfolded too much, the car is towed inconspicuously back to the garage, away from prying eyes and no one is the wiser.
Either all of that, or the Ferrari engine was just giving us a preview of its 2022 reliability in both cars and Lance Stroll can't drive properly. 😂

1:02:27 I think it's about Massa being slower after his crash in Hungary. Nelson Piquet once said that himself lost sense of depth after his Indy crash, and believes that Massa suffered some sort of sequel, being a slower driver as a result.
I think it was after his crash at Imola in 87, where he got concussed. But yeah he did say that, he also added that he had to read signs to know where to brake.

I've long thought it was obvious Massa was never the same after the incident in Hungary. There are some guys who a little bit of whatever it was they had that made them so good after big wrecks, either because of something physical or psychological. And if it is psychological I'm not implying there's anything "wrong" with them. I think you could make the case something has actually gone right as far as self-preservation is concerned. I've seen my share of horror crashes over the years and the driver even getting back in a car at all after them takes enormous courage.
In Brazil it's a common theory that he became a lot slower since the crash. I do believe this is a reference to this but also a joke about Alonso was faster

I agree with George Russell never having a puncture. If he won the race, Merc might've felt the pressure to dump Bottas a year early and promote Russell likewise. Having said, Bottas was unlucky with the pit stop problems with incorrect tyres. Maybe Merc pretended Russell had a puncture to save Bottas' blushes. Although I may say, Russell is outscoring Hamilton, but he's not outpacing him when everything is working for both drivers
I honestly think Hamilton will take over Russel by the end of the season. Might be by a very small margin, might be partly down to luck but I’m confident he’ll do it

As dominant as the W11 was, they didn't really wanna show that anyone unprepared as GR63 was could hop into the W11 and win a race, so they basically tried to silently sabotage him as much as they could. First with the mismatched tires requiring an extra stop, but he was still basically on track to win so they told him he had a slow puncture so he had to pit. I don't believe he had a puncture and I don't believe a team like Mercedes would've made the mistake they did with the mismatching tire set (a mistake they have never made in their 10 years in F1 at the time) unless it was purposely sabotaging Russell
@@WhittleYoon Perhaps. Maybe they did. I’m not going to defend them at all if the evidence is there, but from my point of view it seems futile to throw away potential points for someone’s pride. And this was Bahrain aswell, the first race so Mercedes couldn’t say for sure that they were about to dominate (not yet at least). I don’t know. And it also seems pointless to protect Bottas ego considering they let him go anyway.

I do firmly believe that George did not have a puncture, not because Mercedes saw his potential as a threat, but rather as a test to see how he would handle things not going his way and putting him under extreme stress.
As if driving a Williams wasn't enough test of character. For me the reason for not allow him to win is to not risk criticisms towards Lewis, in the vein of "it's the car, not the driver", which it was extremely clear in Sahkir. However, I think Perez would have been able to defend from Russell in a no-puncture scenario.. Russell was going fast, but not fast enough to catch Perez.
I think it’s believable until you remember f1 is a business. Particularly when you consider how Wolff, and Mercedes run their operations.

I think it makes alot of sense, especially with Hamilton making such a quick comeback for the last race for no real reason. If Lewis had been in the car they'd probably have allowed him to continue the race, a certain race at Silverstone comes to mind. It's at the very least plausible that they ruined Russels race to save face for themselves and Hamilton.

I have a theory of my own. In the 2021 season, Mercedes used Bottas for testing engine reliability. Experimenting in the races on how high they could put the engine without damaging it to much for next races. Although I’m not sure how true it holds up. It is kinda fun to think about.

Nah. Mercedes have already spoken up on why they were always so much more reliable than the other teams. They have a "monster" engine that weighed like 250kg, where nothing would ever break. Then they'd use it to bolt on any new parts for reliable testing. Meanwhile other manufacturers would have multiple part fails and they wouldn't be quite sure was part A the problem or was it part B that failed which led to part A to fail too...

Mine too. I don't know if the electric shock is what actually happened but something weird must have gone down if McLaren lied about Alonso's condition. That the footage has never been released makes me even more suspicious.
My favourite conspiracy theory: Michael Schumacher personally hated Williams (both the team & Frank himself) because in his mind their actions causes the death of Ayrton Senna in Imola and robbed him "passing the torch" moment for him. It also explains* his racing antics with Rubens Barrichello* in 2010* where he almost made then Williams driver racing near the pitwall considering that Barricello was his former Ferrari teammate for 6 years.

Try = Senna and Prost was actually a "bromance", with an unreciprocated feeling, however. I read it once on Reddit, and to some degree, it makes so much sense. Prost said that ever since Senna met him at some funky unimportant races in DTM-like Mercedes cars, Senna somehow "chose" him, from the first race it was Prost who Senna found the guy to beat.
Their personal relationship had always been bizarre and Prost revealed that for instance, back in 1988 they were to take part in a Honda event in Geneva and had lunch together at Prost's house nearby. Senna was apparently very evasive, spoke little if anything and slept through his stay at Prost's.
Obviously after the 1989 season it became even further strained. What I find interesting is what happened at the end of Prost career. Senna was desperate for Alain to remain in F1 and even convinced McLaren to sign him. He couldn't live without Alain driving alongside him. Was it just because of competitive spirit and him being an arch-nemesis? Or maybe was it because he had a huge crush on Prost, and knew that F1 race weekends were the only moments where he could see him, meet him. Without all this, Alain would be gone.
Prost revealed too that during the winter of 1994, Senna told him "something that I was meant to keep a secret all my life, never told it to anyone, not even my wife, my family". What possibly could have been so important to keep in secret? Was it the secret crush?
This is a far-fetched one, but there are even claims that Senna deliberately killed himself at Imola. Realising that Benetton was a rigged car, that he might not be challenging for the title, and that his beloved Alain is out of the sport, he no longer saw purpose in continuing. Dying a legend would immortalise him forever as one of the GOATs and make him into a God-like figure. And I must say, that no matter If purposefully, he achieved that.

The ending actually would explain to some extent why Senna (who always kept his helmet on on the grid before the start of races) at Imola remained without helmet for a good chunk of the time he spent on the dummy grid. Also, if you look at footage taken in those moments, you can see that Senna looks very sad, it could be for the Ratzenberger and Barrichello shunts but still the helmet part makes it quite "interesting" a theory

Seeing this and having been around to remember these, especially the 'Hamilton crane assistance' one shocked me, as in the footage you can see the other car almost crash into the crane - which is exactly what killed Jules so many years later. That there hadn't been anything learned from it at the time shocks me now, as looking back, Jules could still be with us now if that had been properly reviewed.
Cranes have been used on active race tracks for 70 years before Bianchi crashed. Stop trying to make it a thing. He died because he wrecked in the rain and he was unlucky enough to hit the one thing that could possibly kill him.
Martin Brundle in 1998 said during qualifying for the German GP after a car had gone off and track action continued with the tractor on the side recovering the car, "someone is gonna go under one of those one day. I am terrified and i don't understand why we still allow tractors on live race tracks!" Nobody took his words to heart. Brundle himself was in a near fatal accident at Suzuka in 1994. Morbidelli in the Arrows spun off at Dunlop and a tractor was sent out to recover him. Sound familiar? A lap later, Brundle slid off at the same corner and said he was heading straight for the tractor until the last second when he skidded towards the barrier. He bounced off of the barrier and struck a marshall who thankfully only suffered moderate injuries. He KNEW it would happen and said it would in 1998 and 2007 but nobody listened and Jules paid the price...

Senna being sniped is interesting. Not because I believe it, but during the 1999 season, Eddie Irvine got a letter from a fan, offering to shoot a small bullet into Mika Hakkinen's tyre at Monza that year. There is footage of him reading the letter in his Life in the Fast Lane documentary. Some Italian antics?
That made me think a little deeper. let's say the sniper story was somehow true. Maybe the sniper was originally intending to also shoot senna's Tyre but missed and hit his helmet instead. Or the sniper instead hit senna's steering column, sending him straight to the wall. Or the sniper did hit senna's tyre but sent shrapnel straight into his helmet, puncturing it
Do you people get your F1 knowledge from village idiots who shout nonsense? Everyone knows Senna braked from 305 to 213 kph and downshifted twice before impacting the Tamburello outer wall. Why don’t you read his autopsy report and note the basilar skull fracture. It’s a shame there is such a difference in human intelligence across the human race.

My theory about the "cursed Red Bull second seat" was that those cars were just incredibly difficult to drive, and Verstappen was just really, really, REALLY good.
I think the 2019 car was alright to drive. But in 2020 you saw multiple uncharacteristic errors from Verstappen. He didn’t really make a lot mistakes in 2019 and after that year but he had some off moments in 2020. So I think there’s definitely some truth to it
Or being a driver with a wide tolerance on handling characteristics while co-developing cars with unforgiving narrow operating windows could benefit lots in in-team competition.

theres a interesting interview with albon about his time as max`s teammate. he basically said max likes to have his cars to be set up extremly sensitive and compared it to cranking up the sensitivity in a racing sim to 200% and beyond. during the season while the car is being developed more everything gets more and more sensitive and thats completely contrary to what most drivers would want to have to suit their driving style. So when he showed his potential in late 2014 and throughout 2015 in the RB the car was developed due to his input, starting with a very sensitive car for the beginning of the season and only becoming more sensitive throughout the season. that resulted in them having to take more and more risks while the season developed because the car just didnt suit their preferred driving style.
thats why many teammates seemed to be close during the start of the season and the difference in pace between them and max grew bigger and bigger during the year.

DAS was not banned because it was a "moveable aerodynamic device". it literally only affected the toe angle of the front wheels allowing for less tyre scrubbing and higher top speed on straights; and it wasn't not banned the same year "because Mercedes", but because it was already deemed legal by the FIA for 2020. the FIA had to alter the 2021 regs in order to ban DAS
And one of Mercs engineers even said that they developed it and checked it with the FIA and the regulations to make sure it was legal, FIA fully understood exactly what DAS was doing and only banned it because of the protests from RB and as you said, rewrote the regs for it

I always hate that video of Vitantonio Liuzzi sliding off at turn 1 at the Nurburgring and touching the crane - it was so close to pre-empting Jules Bianchi by around 10 years, and it was such a stupid decision for the marshalls and the crane to enter the trackside in those conditions with so many cars aquaplaning off.

There was one time around the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix, where a Ferrari Mechanic got injured due to a driver error (I think that was Olivia Beretta driving). He was driving a Ferrari SF-70H.
I only seen that video until recently, and I believe it should belong around the bottom.
Around 2002, there was a bank called Phoenix Finance, and they wanted to race in Formula 1. So they bought some assets from Prost Grand Prix. But the FIA seemed sus about this, because they needed to pay to enter, but they didn't. This eventually led to court, and Phoenix Finance never entered. I also never heard of this until another iceberg from Reddit I saw.
James Allison actually asked the FIA in 2019 if a DAS system could be done on a button on the steering wheel but the FIA said if they were to invent such a system, you would have to pull the wheel. The FIA thought merc wouldn’t try it but lo and behold, Merc did it. Therefore it was justified that it was banned for 2021 instead of the 2nd race in 2020

In the buildup to the Monaco Grand Prix, Pastor Maldonado said that after his win in Spain, he believed he could challenge for the title. If you look at Scotland on its own (not part of the UK) it has around double the championships and way more race victories, whilst having the same population as Finland. Making it the most successful country per capita!!

The reason DAS was deemed legal was because it was specifically the steering wheel controlling the direction of the front wheels. If it was a separate switch or lever, it would have been illegal. Mercedes were specific and clever. FIA don't care what team it is.

Hulkenberg is literally a paradox, one of the only drivers from that generation that had a stellar junior career with winning all 3 junior formulae categorically(Hamilton, Grosjean, Hulkenberg) being the others. The 2012 lotus was a decent car, as proven by Kimi. Grosjean is a horribly inconsistent driver and Nopodiumberg always crumbles under pressure. They could've achieved more, but that's on themselves not the car.

Nope, watch the 2012 season review. Massa was asked several times to pick up the pace during that race, but he wasn't pushing. Thus, Fernando was faster than him.
