    This video outlines my annual hoof care process. I cover two ways that you can care for the hooves of sheep or goats: manually or with a handling system. I share some of my favorite hoof care supplies for sheep and goats, as well as what hoof trimming day looks like for me at my farm.
    Thanks for watching!

    *Minor correction, the grass-fed yearling did have a small grain ration during the winter following 2022's drought. Very short term.

    I absolutely love that you put scripture in your videos! But I think you might want to change the reference to Gen 1:1 🙂

    Saboten 1210 trimmers are made in Japan and cut alot better and last longer than any others I have used. I feed alot of grain to my weaned lambs, and the hooves do grow quick.

    I can only imagine how tired you are after trimming all those hooves bc I Know how tired I was after trimming just 7 sets of hooves.

    Could you aid your sheep's health by enclosing some fairly large rocks (stacked about 6 feet high) for them to naturally look after their own feet buy having a quick climb. You could also put some water at the top as an incentive. Just a thought. Thanks for posting

    Same issues with cattle, excess grain equals excess growth. Grass is a better solution and far less expensive. Great work!

    hmm i guess goat hooves grow different that sheep hooves. i had to put my goats on grain for a little over a year because the farm next to us was spraying poisons to kill of vegetation, with a crop duster that was spraying houses and other fields. " we got his license taken away by the way" so my goats couldn't eat the grass, had to keep them up and feed grain that whole time and their hooves grow just like they were on grass. which i thought was interesting. but their feed was heavy in alfalfa.

    Can you site any scientific studies that suggest grain makes hooves grow faster or are you basing it on this one case shown on the video? Would highly nutritious forage have the same affect on hoof growth? It has been my experience that the breed and surface that they run on makes a huge difference in the need to trim feet. My North Country Cheviots run outside year around and I never trim the flock. I have had fine wool western range ewes on a bedded pack that needed to be trimmed 3X a year. It seems that the same genetics that make wool grow also make hooves grow. BTW, foot rot is an infectious disease caused by the combination of two bacteria. It is usually introduced by infected new animals entering the flock. Disinfect your footwear if you have been to another sheep operation or the sale barn. Biosecurity is the best prevention for foot rot.

    Your Bible verse is the wrong one, but interestingly its the one i have been referencing back to. Some versions say evil, some say danger. So i come to thinking about sheep to raise. I also think on Abrahams “flocks and herds”. You’re doing a great job with your site and presenting info- a great community service.

    • @inmybible6975

      The Hebrew word used in that verse (Prov 22:3) which is often translated as evil, can mean moral evil in certain contexts, but my understanding is that in its most literal sense it means something closer to misfortune, disaster, affliction, injury... Or an action which would cause one that sort of effect. So the same word is used in other passages to describe storms and earthquakes where there is no moral aspect attributed to them.
      So that's why in verses like this you get some translations which take it to mean something like danger and others which keep the moral aspect and translate it as "evil".

    Its been two weeks but id love to ask the following. I live in an average rainfall, humid temperate area with VERY muddy soil. Been talking to a farmer that gives courses about my sheep shed and he said it can be on the ground, but as far as i noticed the area i picked would be flooded. They would definitly get wet. Im afraid of too many parasites or foot rot and where i live raised floor sheds are the common practice. Any advice?

    • @theShepherdess
      @theShepherdess  10 місяців тому +2

      Hi Joseph,
      It sounds like hoof rot will be a risk. I’d pay very close attention to what the other producers in your area are doing and copy them. In any shed, hoof rot is a risk. The more you can do to keep the ground dry, the better!
