- Thanks to Neil ( NR Fell) or coming up and dipping my sheep. Neil covers all of Scotland and Northern England and has other operators in Wales and South of England.
This system he has developed takes so much stress out the job for farmer and the sheep.
Hope you enjoy,
Cammy

ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus. You will see them all on this channel!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.
As a non-farmer, that dipper looks like something out of a nightmare/ one of my personal worst fears, but that’s way more humane than letting them suffer and die of preventable disease and better than creating resistances. I’m glad you show the unpleasant things too because I like knowing what goes into making the food we eat.
Same. I had to stop watching. That looks so horrible. But it seems the simplest way. I still hate it. Now I need to go take a lorazapan. 😢
@@erintoal2018me too!! What is it for? Better question…What happens when it malfunctions and drowns some sheep??? 😩😩
At least In the US a Dip, is used for flea and tick prevention! Which can still lead to serious illness, complications and death.
I personally am not a sheep header nor have I seen this type of dipping machine, but I would think there is a manual drain, in which can quickly drain the dip bath. Also fun fact but sheep are natural swimmers. So a little dunk under dip wouldn’t be any more serious then us fully dunking our heads into a pool.
Edited for a spelling correction!

There is no animal agriculture without cruelty!
Meat eaters just thinks about their tummies.. they don’t care that those animals were artificially impregnated, whole their life’s they just serve to ppl , live stressful life & in the end they end up in slaughter house .. so they can have another profit from them.. & so you ppl can eat them ..
Stop the torture! Go vegan!
They do seem a LOT calmer this way than the old way. No bawling, no kicking. Scab is truly awful. I've seen sheep scratch themselves to bleeding before with it. Glad you have dipped them. Definitely would pay that man what he is worth!!! His equipment is far better than the old way.
I remember dipping sheep as a kid. You would be bathing in the dip all day! Finally a way to dip sheep that doesn’t dip the farmer!
I’m surprised how calm the sheep actually are, I was expecting them to freak out a bit or at least be unsettled in the ‘drying’ pen but the sheep just took it in their stride. That shows that while looks can deceive it is actually an extremely humane system.
Great way to look at it and this system is the best there is! 😁
I have never seen sheep so calm being dipped. I used to help some the sheep farmers in the early 90s. And can tell you they didn't like dropping off the trapdoor into the dip and when swimming round being pushed under the dip. They made plenty of noise until they got to the steps to get out but once they got out they would calm right down again
These sheep know they have it good, and have trustworthy humans - so they are chill.
It definitely should do the trick to dip them several times four at a time.👍 little Angus and Lizzy.. yes, those sheep are very pretty.
I think the fact that they stay on their feet keeps them calm.
50 years ago, I watched my Dad dip everything on the farm in barrels filled with sheep dip. Sheep, goats, dogs, cats, if it fit in the barrel it got dipped. If he were alive he would love this video.
First time seeing this equipment in action. Compared to the normal way of dipping. This is much easier & it appears the sheep are not too stressed by it. A win win scenario from what I can see. Thanks Cammy for showing us & cracking looking rams & sheep, especially your home bred boy. 👍
Sheep Shepherd from Ireland did his sheep a few months back using a mobile set up similar to this. Like Cammy, he's a multi-generation farmer.
What exactly does this cover?
Great video, Cammie! Working from dawn to dusk. We appreciate your time spent sharing your life with us. That method of dipping is amazing compared to throwing the sheep in a deep tub, and then fishing them out with a crook! Better for the sheep and the shepherd, I would think! Blessings on you and your sweet family.❤
Never ever seen a truck for this purpose.. amazing stuff!
I think this is way less stressful to the sheep, Cammy, than the usual running them through a dip race. Here the sheep are calm and when they slowly go under the water their instinct to hold their breath kicks in. While the race method the sheep are running, then swimming, then getting pushed under the water as they are swimming, when their respiration rate would be higher. Also great that the used water is properly disposed of. Great that someone devised such a system. Hopefully there's some sort of back up if the hydraulics fail. The ewes you bought really are a gorgeous group of well bred sheep.
Those are some gorgeous ewes you bought!
What a dipper machine! Thank you for sharing the numbers on your bill and selling sheep. This keeps life in perspective. Work hard, pay bills, eat and party with what remains. Peace to you all. Beautiful flock of sheep.
Fascinating to watch! Never seen sheep being dipped before and seeing them just stand about in the drip section calm as can be was great, clearly this isn't too stressful for them and I like that. Can't avoid stress at all with this kind of thing obviously but the less the better
Just a brilliant description with reasoning about why sheep should be dipped rather than just using a injectable product. Sheep scab is a truly awful plague within the national sheep flock and causes infected sheep absolute agony through skin irritation and is much more common than people think.
It’s a brilliant system and quick for both the sheep and you, they didn’t seem bothered, no panicking and didn’t come up coughing and sputtering from what we saw. Just a shake and back to the field! ❤
It's incredible how different the colour of the dip was between when the rams went in compared to its colour when the ewes got dipped. What a wonderful bit of kit that dipper truck is. It's impressive.
Hi Cammie, Lizzie, Joch & Angus, it did seem cruel, but for 20 seconds of discomfort they will stay so much healthier. Thanks for your knowledge and experience ♥️💙🩵🩵
Thanks Teresa. It’s unfortunate that this is the only way to do it but it’s such an important treatment.
@@TheSheepGame I agree 💯
What diseases is this for?
Ow I held my breath with them bless, but I agree with why it should be done my recent wrote a uni paper on the over use of worming medication and your absolutely right it’s going the wrong direction xx ❤
Where was that when I was a young lad back in the 70's helping out dipping sheep on the Pentland Hills. Amazing how the sheep could jump out of the dip and try to do a runner. 😂😂
That mobile dipping station is amazing and works out really cheap compared to having to pay local council crazy money for the chemicals licence and paying for disposal. That's why most village sheep dip fanks near me closed to dipping as they had been priced out by the government
The licence is about £500 up front and then a yearly retainer of £70. This is paid to SEPA. You don't pay for disposal if you have have dispersal sights on your ground as listed on your license.
I freaked out a bit when I saw the first dip. Amazing how calm they were. Great system.
Me too 🫣
My drowning fear kicked in watching this, which I didn’t expect. I know it is necessary and agree that it needs done. Great job keeping them healthy
Watching old movies and even shows showing how they did this 100 yrs ago this is fast and humane . Thanks cammy you’re a gem xox
Good morning from Montreal QC Canada .. hello Mr Cammy .. as always a beautiful upload and you always bring it to all of us around the World, best of the best footage compilation countryside content video and I really appreciate and enjoy watching your lifestyle documentary video channel .. keep it up and have a wonderful blessing weekend to you and your beautiful family over there .. Merci beaucoup Monsieur
Thank you sir! 😁
This is a great system, we had a pit drop off with a ramp out and you had to have someone ready to pull the sheep out, they stumble, trip ect… and could stay under too long. Backbreaking to pull a soaked sheep out!! And very stressing for the sheep!!!
I'm impressed ❤
Its an ingenious machine. What's kind of safety does it have if the cage doesn't lift and the sheep are under?
Are sheep man had Neil here once, think we did something like 2000. It was a long day. it’s a very impressive thing to see on here but seeing it first hand is something else.
Someone needs to invent a sheep snorkle😆, just kidding. That is an amazing system.
Watching the lambs after their swim doing The Sheep Dip Shimmy! 😄😄 Canny little things ❤❤
Almost went fan girl on a young lad who had a sheep game hoodie on this morning in Wooler 😂
Intense process.. but a really bad bug disease. That sheep dip company did such an excellent job of handling. Thanks for sharing.. love from the USA!
Thanks glad you liked it
When you said dip I had no idea they were getting a full bath I’ve learned something new today
This was wonderful. The light was great we farmers work in the dark along with the light. Have a great week.
Thank you! You too!
Do you & the family ever have a chance to chill & relax??? Seems as though it's go,go ,go all the time. Love that dipping machine Wow!!!
That's life on a farm for you, especially a livestock farm - there's always a dozen things that need doing every day, and then there are all of the unexpected extras that kick in when one (or more!) of the animals gets itself into trouble or falls ill or the like!
Thanks!
Very interesting. Thank you!
It's amazing you have grass all winter!! Last winter we had 8 ft snow drifts. Nothing but dead stubble for half the year. 🥴
Such a far cry from the old way farmers used to do sheep dipping. Great to see all this new equipment in action and how it benefits the sheep 👍
That dipping machine certainly makes the job as easy as possible for the farmer. It looks like the sheep didn't seem stressed by it, and it's for their own health benefit.
Indeed, what would you do without Lizzie...? She's definitely a keeper.
That's one seriously awesome bit of kit, much quicker than the old sheep dips, no struggling to make sure full coverage of the sheep before it makes a bid for freedom lol, and keeping there feet on a floor seemed to keep them calmer. It made a long hard job look effortless.
Just caught up on your segments on landward. The dipping episode was an interesting one. Getting to see it in long form is a treat. Good luck to you all.
Thank you😁
I'm curious how many sheep one batch of dip will do before the effectiveness is compromised?
With our size of dip tank we can dip over 3000 sheep before we need to completely clean out and start a new full dip bath
Cracking video as always. Great dipping setup
What a brilliant system! The sheep take it so well. Great video yet again!👍
That is an awesome machine, how wonderful! Great video Cammy❤❤
Great video Cammy as always I wise they had that back in my day so quick and less stress brilliant piece of kit 💪👌👌👌
These sheep seem like they know exactly when to hold their breath because there's no sputtering or coughing when they come up.
It’s the mammalian dive reflex i believe 😅
That is such an interesting set up. We don't have Scab here in Canada, luckily.
Thanks for showing us this. Life as a sheep farmer isn't all about birthing and shearing. This is a great dipping example.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Compared to other videos I have seen that was a FAST dip.
Awesome never seen sheep dipped that way. This looks much calmer process Thanks for sharing Cammy yes we're blessed to have Lizzy.
Great vid as always cammy lovely batch of ewes at the end 👍👍
Very interesting. They don't seem as freaked out as I expected.
oh my gosh that looks crazy. at first I just thought it was going to take them down to where their little noses poking up. but when it took them completely under the water I was like oh no they're drowning sheep. I just could not believe that you would put them completely under the water including their eyes and respiratory system. I'm not a farmer and I'm sure whatever he's trying to get rid of you have to do everything and it must the safest way and they probably closed off their airways. thanks for sharing
It will be interesting to see how easy it is next year, sheep have long memories.
They have long memories for faces but I find things like the clipping trailer they just run up it each year like it’s the first time. If that was true they would never run through the te pari 😁
Clipping trailer and sheep handler are a lot different to being submerged in chemical. It will be very interesting.@@TheSheepGame
Great informational video
That is really an impressive dipping system - top notch. 🐏🐏🐏🐑
It is a bit distressing to watch, as you can see some of the sheep a little distressed after the first time under water.😬
But thank goodness they are only under water for a couple of seconds. 😉
Could not hold my breath any longer!lol
How ingenious a gadget that Dip Truck is! The critters weren't bothered any more than under a hard rain. May there be no parasites upon them! Or in them!
Was dipping not a requirement before, I recall pictures when I was young of the Police having to check that it was being completed or is my memory wrong.
I saw this on Landward on Britbox in the states. You are such a star!
Brilliant 🥰
Sheep on their backs are not good. Sheep dipping was incredible.
My Dad used to dip sheep the old way which worked ok ..he even put the dogs in at the end.. didnt do them any harm..
Great job Cammy and beautiful wee family... God Bless, from Co Antrim...🐑🐏
How do you make sure there is large animal veterinary care available to farmers in your country? Here in the USA we are having trouble with accessing large animal vets in some rural areas.
Whats yer thoughts on spot on? I stopped dipping 5/6 years ago and just use spot about 3 times a year, I just use a small syringe without the needle down onto the skin very easy done
Bloody good show sir 🎉🎉 barry with the mullet abit camra shy there 😂😂
There so happy there not running out of it
Great honest & educational video as always cammy.
Will bout regular dipping to compare to this looks very calm! Excellent!
DAD I'VE GOT A COMPLAINT, THERE WAS 1399 OF OUR FAMILY, HAD A BATH BEFORE ME... UNCLE COLIN SHOUTED TO ME, I'VE HAD A NUMBER 2 IN THE BATH BILLY, ENJOY... CAN I GO FIRST NEXT YEAR PLEASE 🤣🤣🤣... EXCELLENT VIDEO, STAY SAFE
This is a kinder way to dip than the old fashioned way that was horrible for the sheep and the farmer ,it so nice to see how well you care for the sheep
That was entirely simple, like falling in a pond and getting out again. People project their human terrors onto animals instead of rationally stepping back and realizing that animals do not process things in the same ways that humans do. Add into this when people who don't work with animals for a living and have no actual experience with them only watch UA-cam videos and then try to remark with emotion instead of logical clarity. "Trauma" is not emotional in the same way for them as it is for us. This is an excellent system, and I wish more people would recognize that just because you have an opinion doesn't mean your opinion is good or valid.
How do you manage your herds to minimize Johne's Disease?
Eyy Brancepath, some local lads. I recall the fella who did Sheep Shepard's lot with the same system was saying even pregnant ewes could be dipped in it without problem, so it wasn't super stressful for them.
Hi Cammy & family, thank you for your vlog, very entertaining and full of important information, love and hugs to you all, Sue & Ben (Woodhall Spa) xx
Question from a Kiwi -
Is there a rule or something around the UK that forces you guys to fully dip sheep?
Because I would have assumed we have just as much fly strike here (mites not so much, but any chemical you can apply through dip you can jet on I'd have thought?) and we haven't actually dipped for many years. It's all just relatively cheap, extremely fast, easy to move jetting machines now and most big farmers own one personally.
So the jetters don’t deal with scab and there is some talk that they may create resistance to OP dip because of the incorrect application. Scab is such a big issue here it’s not worth the risk of creating resistance just for fly strike. So we generally use clik instead. 👍
as a ex farmer that understands the process i though you explained that brilliantly to what could look like a mass drowning exercise very well done
Essential jobs for problems we bred into them.
I am impressed at how clean the dipping unit arrived. It doesn’t take the sheep long to create a poo soup. The only thing you could get is post dipping lameness. It happened a lot during the compulsory dip era which was intended to eliminate scab. Good of the mart to give you credit.
Post dipping lameness is from the dip tank not being correctly cleaned out. We make sure after every days dipping the tank is completely cleaned aswell as the full unit
Good to know that’s Neil!
I did not know anything about dipping sheep so this was incredibly interesting! I always wish the sheep could be washed to make them pretty though. That setup is super cool but, at the end of any car wash there is always a blow dryer! A little warm air to fluff them up would be nice!😂😂😂💕🇨🇦
🤣 that might push the price up a fair bit 😁
@@TheSheepGame but your video would go viral!🤣🤣🤣
Hi Cammy! My word, what a wonderful passion you have for your job. Admirable.
May I ask a question please.
As a tour guide taking guests across Scotland ,,on every tour I see lots of sheep with " usually blue - paint on the back of their necks. Why is that please, Cammy?
I always know you do the best for your sheep. It's who you are. I think you and Lizzie do as well as humanly possible within your means. Well done.
🇨🇦 great video as always. Initially it was a bit scary as I have a fear of putting my head underwater but it looks like an amazing system and the sheep seemed to go with the flow ( pun intended 😊)
A boy Cammy another good video 👍.
Maybe I'm just old school but I'd prefer the tub.
Makes me ill standing over it all day. Bought a £300 mask for it and it just steams up when I start sweating 🤣
@@TheSheepGame steams up when the sweating & swearing starts 🤣🤣.
Same as that, I don't like standing near dip for long periods of time either.
Hi Cammy, best way to dip sheep I've ever seen. That machine takes the hard work out of it. How much does it cost per sheep?
Full costs in the video there Ivan. £1.40 / head for similar numbers to me
A lot safer for man and beast alike !! Excellent job Guys
I’ve never seen anything like this. Very interesting. I’m wondering how many sheep are dipped before the water and chemicals get changed and refreshed or is the same mix used for all of them?
It’s constantly topped up with water and chemicals all day. Neil has a system for it. Think it’s like every 200
Sheep or so.
Very impressive work 🎉❤
Cammy, how do they maintain the same dip strength from 1st to last sheep? The mix looked a bit used toward the end. It would be nice if the mix was maintained over the duration of the flock. Also if the dip mix was filtered to remove sheep scat solids. 😁
Good questions!!
sheep take out some water in the wool during the dip ,water has to be regularly topped up at this time additional chemical dip concentrate will be added in proportion to the amount of water that has to be added
Amazing that Dipping Machine is Cammy. ❤️🇦🇺🏴
New to your channel. I'm not sure if you farm for meat or fiber... but I wonder if the dip affects the fiber 🤔 I suppose it doesn't matter if they're getting scab. I'm just curious as I know nothing about sheep farming.
The sheep look nice and clean after treatment.
I won't lie, that's freaking me out to see them dunked under the water. Seriously a nightmare!
Yeah it’s not nice but it’s so important.
That's such a cool system! Thanks for sharing! Just one weird question... Can sheep swim?? I realize there's no need, I'm just curious. 🤔😂
As long as they havent much wool, yes. My friends hair sheep (dorpers) survived a wildfire by jumping in the pool, and were swimming actively when rescued.
Yes they can
I never knew they did this. Very educational.
Does that release the lanoline from the fleece?
Really interesting vlog. I looked at the Merch as directed and Jock makes a fabulous model !
That’s a great pic🤣🤣
How do they add dip solution as the level goes down? The water/dip solution would need to be the same for all sheep, I would think? Also, what happens to any dip left over at the end?
Ooo I couldn’t watch the dipping the poor sheep are under water. 😮
Yeah it’s tough to watch. So important though. 👍
Baptising sheep
Due to the wide spread issue with sheep
Scab, do you think clipping contractors next year should be cleaning/spraying their trailers down between farms?
