Hey Ryan, I've watched your channel since 2012. I was a young 14-year-old with a passion when I discovered you on my dad's iPad. You've guided me throughout my journey as a filmmaker- from making videos on my parents' home video camera, to high school DSLR short films with my best friends, and tomorrow I go into preproduction for my Thesis film at Florida State Film School. You've been with me through it all. I just wanted to say thank you for everything. You've taught me so much. On behalf of all of the kids with a dream that you've single-handedly mentored, I just want to say that I hope I make you proud.
I think the thing I love most about Ryan is his ability to roll with the punches and his positive attitude when things don't go according to plan. 1) because I don't think things ever go according to plan and 2) that attitude is contagious and I'm sure it spreads to the rest of his crew. I've learned a lot from Ryan and Film Riot over the years, not just about film making, but about being a leader as well. Thanks!
It's really cool to see the progression of film riot from a bunch of guys in their backyard with some PVC pipe to shooting a full on film with with Cooke anamorphic lenses. Thanks for all the inspiration Ryan!
You are a huge inspiration and something that got us going...at 40 years old I’m about to release my first short film with many to come and you and your crew have inspired me and my little crew...thank you so much for sharing your insights in the film and diy world.
This is going pretty fast ! Finding location, shooting the next week, editing 3 days later... I thought the process would have taken way more time. But it’s a good surprise ! Shows that when things are done correctly, they can get done fast as well ! Thanks Ryan
All the best to you Ryan for your new film. I truly look forward to seeing it when it’s done. If it wasn’t for you I’d have never tried to make my own films. 👍🏻
I'd love to know what you mean by "very low budget" obviously it's usually relative especially compared to the vision/goal. But it would be killer to get an idea of the budgets for projects like this and Guest of Honor, including what the rental costs would be if the films weren't sponsored by gear brands.
From what I understand from my time watching filmriot. Low budget covers calling in favors from family and friends with budget mostly going towards catering amd necessary equipment. From the short snippet I saw of the shot script, I saw steady cam used every shot, so that means a gimbal stabilizer, lens and camera rental (probably just the lenses) and towards any practical effect. Chances are a since this is a 2 day shoot, looking at a couple thousand. If paying the actors, DP, gaffer, etc, probably closer to 10 thousand. But ryan and crew are family and tight knit friends, so chances are lots of people are doing this in their spare time and taking payment in the form of a good demo reel.
@@AdsForAdults You're probably right. I'm guessing what he spent money on is equipment and some of the important crew like actors, DP, editor, location scouts etc.
We are so excited for your new short film, Ryan! Best of luck. and we wanted to let you know how helpful we find all of your videos--they've really helped us :)
The frame on Ryan’s shot is especially amazing in this episode!! Such great background and amazing lighting. It’s improved from the last setup for sure
Ryan and I are following very similar paths at the moment. Hopefully mine can work out as well as his does. Ireland’s a strange place to shoot: some great parts like tax incentives and lots of high-end production like GoT, but very few rental houses and prop shops. A lot of time I find that what I want just can’t be got in Ireland. Hope the shoot went well, my next one’s shooting in November and it’s quite ambitious for the budget
Ryan, I’ve been watching your channel for about two years and love it, have learned a ton from it and am extremely excited to see what’s next for you and your team. It would be really cool if you could start a small series about the pre production process. That would be great, things like sourcing for actors/actresses, asking to use locations, assembling a crew, etc I guess the business side of pre production instead of the creative side.
I think it is because he/they care much more about fine tuning their skills rather than creating good stories. They definetely have the ability to make some epic movies if they chose. Instead they do action based short films.
@@audunystgaard I don't pretend to know his motivation for every short film, my point is that they have been doing this for ten years and have during that time focused solely on honing skills rather than making good films. Quality over story. Lots of shorts that look really great but otherwise uninteresting. If they wanted to make some good stories they could. They'd rather focus on techniques and tricks.
So excited for you Ryan! I have a question for the next time you have a Monday question day or maybe even bts questions for the making of TCAK. Over the years in making shorts films from Losses to Guest of Honor/Ballistic how much would you say you've listened to the fanbase community in seeing what worked and what didn't work and using that to prepare you for the big leagues? If you do look at the comments, has there been anything from that that has helped you grow? Thanks :)
I'm happy to see that you guys used a 360 camera, I know you guys work in a different format, but would love to see what you come up with using one of these gadgets.
Hey Ryan, is there any chance you would be willing to share your budget breakdown for this short? Or maybe your total at least? I am really curious how much this is going to cost to produce.
That’s awesome you’re coming to STL! Would be amazing to meet u even just in passing. Guess ur a celebrity now Ryan. 😎👍 good luck on ur project. I’m going to be Filming next month for me zombie series 🧟♂️so much to do
You had mentioned using location scouts......are they people you know (personally or by proxy) and/or have worked with? Or is there a website that offers scouting services based on the area one is looking to film?
I've always wanted to become a location scout and I was wondering who you used for film scouting? I want to find a way to be one in a state like Arizona where it seems hard to find work here.
So our Godfather of filmmaking is still not making features for Hollywood, Netflix, etc...I don't know if Hollywood/Netflix even know who good filmmakers really are! And yes, I wish from the bottom most part of my heart that, Ryan gets his feature to the big screen. Thanks Ryan for saving thousands of lives!
Holy cow, looks like you have a bigger budget than the last Warner brothers movie i saw.. I did a shoot for the Reelz Channel and it didn't have half the equipment i saw here
I’ve had some trouble finding production scouts in the past. Are there any sites you’d recommend using to connect with some? I’ve been using Mandy.com, but wanted to see if there were other good ones. Thanks!
Question for whoever at Film Riot may or may not see this. You always cater to filmmakers with little to no budget. As you mentioned in the video, There Comes a Knocking is a lower budget film. What exactly is your budget for this film? I’m definitely a near no budget filmmaker and I’d love some perspective on what a project like this costs.
I hope that you finally get your chicken on this edit. Fingers crossed. ...oh and I hope the shoot goes well too, I guess. But mostly, it's about chicken for me.
Film Riot is criminally underrated.
Underrated? Um no, they have 1.5million subs.
@@jakemakes they should have at least 10 million subs, there is a new generation of Film maker and this channel is ultimate spot for all information
@@kameramanhv Eh, there aren't that many budding filmakers

For me low budget is between 3000 and 5000 € for a feature
@@stefanomaggio5109 No feature is made on that amount. $3 million would be a low budget feature.
Cory Redding oh I’m sure. But I wanted to get an idea of what something like this would cost the rest of us who don’t have as many connections.
