  • A recently resurfaced clip of 90s Björk talking about gender stereotyping is still pertinent today.
The interview, which first aired in February 1994 by Spain TV, features the star talking passionately about the issue, following the release of her second album, the appropriately-titled, Debut.
"Men: They can be silly, fat, funny, intelligent, hard-core, sensual, philosophical," says 90s Björk. "But with women they always have to be feminine. Feminine, feminine."

She is telling people to become more than a general existence of gender. To be a character of creation and expression. To be complicated and free in action and to share it with everyone as she has done with her art. That is the influence I feel from this wonderful lady.

Back in the day when you weren't accused of being a "sjw" for saying something even remotely progressive...
Edit: This thread proves my point beautifully. Anyone today says something like this, they'll get dragged by the internet and lumped into the sjw category. But because this is Bjork and this was recorded in the 90s, suddenly it's "profound" and "progressive". If a young person says this today, they get labeled as
    "white knight" (for guys)
    "simp" (for guys)
"man hater" (with no evidence to back this claim)
    "basic"
    "hysterical"
"delusional women who makes things up" (classic gaslighting)
    "sjw"
    "land whale"
    "feminazi"
    "libtard"
    "whiny"
"someone who bases their whole identity around being a woman because they speak out about women's rights" (even if there's typically no actual evidence to back that claim either)
    "woke"
I'm sure Bjork got hate for being a feminist too back in the day, but she doesn't anymore because she's been in the industry for a while and is therefore now well respected by most. If someone like Billie Eilish says something feminist like this, she's made fun of by many, but then 20-30 years from now, people will look back and say, "Omg this is so profound." but then look down at younger artists from the future for doing the same, thus the cycle continues. It's a pattern and y'all don't want to admit that it's true.
Edit: Five years later, and y'all are still proving my point. Can't resist, huh? Keep drinking the Kool aid.

No, there's a HUGE difference. She's saying here that she wants people to be seen as individuals first and foremost. Today's SJWs treat everyone as if their skin color/gender is the most important thing for how you perceive them. It's a really sick attitude, it's divisive and it's why people hate it.

Because this was perfectly reasonable and well put back then. Nowadays sjws get offended over ANYTHING and want to limit the speech of others because it *may* offend someone, that isn't even them. Policing what the others can say. Getting offended in behalf of others. And most importantly, considering all opinions BUT those from white cis males. Isn't that a little sexist and racist?

Femininity isn't shamed, it's shamed in men because a feminine man is seen as a useless man and even a burden to society because of it. A woman is seen as fully human and as a female just for existing. A man must become a real man, and earn his humanity.

I have seen feminine men become socially discarded because no one wants to associate with them. Many of them have to live at the margins of society and what people think is respectable. Its a real shame because feminine men, and I have befriended them, have shown me grace, sweetness, and a side to life I had never known existed. People in society are too preoccupied with having a marriage and a family that anyone who falls outside of that they look at with fear and contempt. However I befriended those men when I was a single woman and I talk with them as much as I can, usually every day.

Will you spend the rest of your days in acceptance of who you truly are regardless of the norms others set for you, or will you continue bending over backwards and pretend to be what you're not to please a bunch of twats?

Person 1 = woman -> appropriate reaction, what was she supposed to do?
Person 2 = man -> appropriate reaction, brave, calm, took control of the situation and protected the woman
      Case B:
Person 1 = man -> complete coward, hid behind the woman and put the woman in more danger, poor excuse of a man
Person 2 = woman -> incredibly impressive, would have never expected that
So you see, your gender is intertwined with who you are, what you can do and what is expected of you, and you cannot judge a person as a human and abstract their gender out of it. It's not that you're this character and then you just happen to be a woman or a man. No, you are a woman or a man and upon that, the quality of your character is determined based on gender specific criteria.

The funny thing is nowadays men are more judged by women, then women are by men in the Western countries. Kind of strange how things went upside down. Putting a big emphasis on woman as people who must prioritize motherhood, caring for their husband, and working house chores as their personality. This I think is what Bjork is referring too, a lot of people have expectations of woman, and if they don't show this conservative femininity of being cute, looking for a husband, but not acting sexually before their marriage, only doing so to have kids and be a mother, and then spending their time caring for their husband and children, then they will be judged harshly for it. And like I said, this is still true of a really large number of people who will have this judgement, and criticize, and call them name, etc., if they don't fall in that mold.

@@Grugyn As a woman, I personally found this highly relatable. I think there should be a distinction between men and women in the media, and "normal" men and women. For a lot of women and men in the media, the qualities Björk enumerated are acceptable, and even encouraged in a lot of cases. I, on the other hand, a "normal", non-rich, non-famous, non-exceptionally good-looking woman, have been criticised for being "too passionate" about what I love, too "intellectual" (I'm in research, so of course I am), and I've been dismissed as an airhead because I'm hyper sometimes. I constantly have to prove myself or fit a certain image in order to be respected or heard. I try not to be too much of this, or too much of that. Also, I'm French and Russian, and views differ depending on culture. French people generally don't pressure you too much about being masculine or feminine, but Russians are a whole other story. My family doesn't care about my credentials or what I've achieved all that much, they just keep pestering me about not being dainty or feminine enough (one of my grandaunts literally told me once "Happy birthday, I wish for you to be happy and more feminine!" even though I'm not anything close to masculine. Just an example among many others). In their eyes, no matter what I do, I always have to be what they consider as "feminine". Then you've got "real Russian men", who are supposed to be "very masculine" and well-off (a pressure for an overwhelming number of men), but they can still get away with a lot of things: be fat, ugly, intelligent, obsessed, sensual, nerdy, class clowns, brutal, and many other things. Women in Russia can't even remotely be a little "rough around the edges".
What I'm trying to say is that people in the media are exceptions. People in the media aren't representative, and views of femininity or masculinity can be pretty different depending on where you live. So no, in my case at least, barely anything has changed. Sorry for the long reply.

I see a lot of people in the comments claiming that men have it worse than women, or viceversa, and, while I could reply to one of them, I prefer to do a more general statement, so, here's my not very well informed opinion on the matter:
Your pain doesn't have to be worse than everybody else's in order to be valid, it isn't a competence, there is millions of people on the planet, enough to work on all societal problems at once, there is no need to prioritize, so, there is no need to know who suffers more, if it makes people feel bad, it is important, and it should be addressed.
With this in mind, yes, both genders have and continue to suffer societal norms, with women being robbed of being anything but a sort of decorative piece for men, and men being robbed of any and all emotional tools for dealing with any kind of emotional pain, and both of these problems have to go away.
But, now, I totally understand why men feel the need for stating the pain of manhood in a feminist video, or, I think I do, after all, all the media's attention is centered around the pain of womanhood, isn't it? It makes sense that men feel left out and ignored, nobody goes to the street to march about those kind of things.
    But, actually, they do.
The main problem about being a man is that those emotional tools are seen as feminine, women things, so, we as alpha males can't use them, but, there is a group fighting against what a male is supposed to be, and, altough their cause is not about men in general, it is the attention and fighting that a lot of men feel nonexistant.
I'm talking about the male section of the LGBTQ+ community, because, just stop and think about it, while of course a significant part of this group is not feminine, the group as a whole are seen as such, and, a lot of those people show themselves proudly as feminine, as people with actual feelings, and, by doing that, they are indeed changing the "fact" that men can't cry, and that men have to be strong at all moments.
So, by being themselves, and fighting for their rights, the community is also making a point about manhood and getting society to be open to emotions, coming from all genders.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
Now, again, this is only mi not very well informed opinion, I'm not a very political person, I may be misunderstanding something, but, thanks for reading, and, sorry for any mistakes, as english is not my native language.
    Have a nice life, bye.

This is a very limited, juvenile, modern perspective. men's problems are not that they "lack emotional tools" - whatever that means. Men's problems are that we do almost all of the hardest labor in society (infrastructure, industry, labor, construction) - representing the vast majority of workplace fatalities and injuries - and most of them are paid shit for it - Men are 3x as likely to be homeless as women - and many working class men with full time jobs still end up homeless. Worker safety, more democratic workplaces/co-ops, and appropriate pay for the working man are what men need.
Commercial fishermen often work 16 hours a day in brutal conditions, are more than 30x as likely to be killed on the job and are paid pennies for it.

I hate the kind of videos that talk about how to be a feminine woman, they often just tell you to suppress your personality and be submissive, or to put on an act and be and dress as stereotypically feminine as possible even if you yourself are not.
They basically want you to be a shallow, dishonest, incomplete version of yourself, they never directly say this but they act like unless you already are very feminine to begin with, being your real self will make you too masculine and will scare men away. It’s like they think all men are emotionally fragile children who can’t handle a woman who shows even a little bit of individuality and it makes less feminine women feel like there’s something wrong with them and that they have to define themselves purely on whether or not they can attract a man.
Hearing their advice makes me very uncomfortable because it’s like they’re saying I’m not good enough as I am, but I don’t want to put on an act, I’d rather be rejected for who I really am than be accepted for being someone I’m not.

Those "channels" make me so uncomfortable bc they basically tell me to stay traumatized and shrink myself more than I already do. They don't care about CPTSD, only about views.
If I am supposed to "submit" to a man, I'll happily stay single forever. I've supressed myself enough in my childhood/young adulthood.

    • @kobra4422
      @kobra4422 Рік тому +15

Adding to my previous comments, I've realized the reason why women are expected to not have a personality, is bc. if you are aware of your individuality, you naturally become selective of who you want to date/marry. You look for people with similar values and tastes. So naturally you gonna reject men who don't meet your criteria.
It's a threat to patriarchy that looks at humans as biological organisms, without any uniqueness.
Woman who doesn't have clear likes and dislikes, is expected to accept any man who looks at her.
But being opposite gender isn't enough to have fullfiling relationship. Ofc patriarchy doesn't care about it, it only cares about procreation and keeping the genetic line, not your wellbeing.
Men and women who embrace their uniqueness create a hell of problems for opressive systems who can't control them anymore.

Yep, she pretty much sums up the gender stereotypes and how that smothers the creativity in each individual. Women suffer from that the most. But men are not safe from it either. Especially if they show anything remotely connected with emotion or femininity, immediately the mainstream calls them weak and all kinds of crap - which is what women are "suppose to be", which then is used against them (women) when they want to break out of the mold created by mainstream society.

    • @Mia199603
      @Mia199603 Рік тому +9

Except stereotypically masculine traits are praised, and feminine traits are frowned upon. Masculinity is good, femininity is bad. That's the root cause of homophobia, even if a certain gay man isn't feminine at all, just the implication of a possibility that he might be playing the feminine role in bed is horrific enough. Homophobes have an obsession with gay sex, they need to know what this gay man is doing in bed, in specific detail, before they can judge whether he's worthy of acceptance or not. I pity those who think this way, because clearly they've never experienced pegging, which is a shame.
Meanwhile we have the double standards of women being assertive, ambitious, passionate, and being called a bitch for having those masculine traits. Women can't raise their voices, can't have strong opinions. And of course men can't be feminine too, but a feminine woman has to be meek and weak and that's humiliation enough. A masculine man is respected, a feminine woman is barely tolerated and her place in society is of servitude. You still don't see how men have it better?

    • @itskarl7575
      @itskarl7575 Рік тому +10

@@Mia199603 Masculine traits are praised _in men._ Feminine traits are not. Feminine traits are praised _in women._ Masculine traits are not. At the core of homophobia is the notion that a homosexual man has abandoned his manhood. Even a straight man who is raped by another man gets this stigma, because a man is supposed to be a man - and someone made him his bitch - bluntly put.
In general terms, no matter what the gender roles are, a man is supposed to be manly, and a woman supposed to be womanly. Only a man is ever derided for being feminine - a woman never is. Likewise, "butch" is hardly considered a compliment for a _woman._
You say these things yourself, in your second paragraph, which actually defeats your first paragraph. Yet women have much more leeway for being masculine, than the other way around. This is because a masculine woman is merely _unattractive,_ generally speaking, whereas a feminine man is both _unattractive_ and _pathetic_ - according to _both_ sexes.
And don't give me this crap about "women can't raise their voices". Complete and utter nonsense. Women DO raise their voices. Sure, they may be regarded as bitchy, but so what? Men who act the same way are regarded as assholes. Don't tell me that every man who raised his voice and threw his weight about made you think "what a hunk of a man!" More often than not, you've probably been thinking, "what a dick", or "what a jerk" or something similar. Note that such slurs are usually gendered: women are bitches, men are dicks and assholes. Both sexes can be cunts. In sum, there are no more insults specific for women than there are for men.

@@Mia199603 And no, men don't have it better. Men just have it different. There is no 3rd party giving privileges anyways, so that you can even think about injustice. Men go to wars, men are expected to defend the women. Men have insane expectations of them and societal pressures you cannot even fathom. I know your petty brain loves unauthentic online npc statistics. What about men unlifing themselves more than women? How can you argue that their life is easier? It's not just numbers on the paper, there's a reason for it. Also your brainwashing ideology tells you that a man and a woman are just social constructs. So the whole topic is irrelevant then? Every liberal sjw pulls the woman card very quickly when she needs it, but "supports non-binary gender ideology". We have a word for people like you. NPCs
