What an excellent movie, so well-acted by all, especially Rupert Penry-Jones and Lydia Leonard, intrepid screenplay, authentic costumes, scenery, etc.! Where has this gem been hiding?! Bravo! From the USA🚀.
Thoroughly enjoyed this adaption with one of my favs Rupert, always so dashing, I understand why the ladies like him he's handsome as heck ! I also loved Lydia, she was a perfect foil to his conservative character, she was a 'firecracker' too !!
Rupert Penry-Jones is married to Irish actress Durvla Kerwin. They married in 2007 and they have 2 children, Florence and Peter. His mother, Angela Thorne, is English, and his father, Peter Penry-Jones, is Welsh. He has some Indian heritage through his mother’s side. Read: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Penry-Jones.
Thank you! Much enjoyed this! Very good quality video for a 2008 film on YT. Such beautiful scenery, decor/location, fashion of the period : excellent. And great acting !
This is my favorite version of the 39 steps. Rupert Penry Jones and Lydia Leonard have amazing chemistry (and what a pleasure it was to see them again in WhiteChapel!). The music is so wonderful as well and the scene by the fire manages to be alluring, sensual and sweet at the same time, so the director is not shab either! For those of you who don't like, you don't have to watch. Haters gonna hate. Probably just jealous of Rupert.
No aeroplane had a machinegun in 1914. That anachronism was blatant and unnecessary. The pilot might have had a pistol, or there could have been a second man with a rifle, but they marred the movie with that scene.
The scenery is a wonderful Character! #RupertPenryJones has a soft & alluring acting style with a hint of Comedy. His gift #makesithisown in every scene! Remarkable!🙋🏽♀️💫👈🏼
A suffragette and an adventurer. Superb combination and an excellent rapport between Penry-Jones and Lydia Leonard. Most faithful adaptation of Buchan's original novel? Brilliant soundtrack too.
Absolutely not any kind of adaptation of Buchan's novel. Hannay never had anybody by his side in the book, woman or man and that made the book far better IMO. There was far more suspense and intrigue with him working alone. The Germans popped up in very good disguises which meant I couldn't put the book down.
An otherwise excellent film let down by historical inaccuracy: the suffragette implied that men had the vote at the time of the events of the story. In fact, Parliament granted universal suffrage to men in 1918, and to women in 1928. Before then, as I understand it, only the property owning classes, men and women, were allowed the vote.
I also think that in 1928 in the UK all adult women over the age of 21 had the right to vote. Before that, in 1918, only 30-year-old women had the right to vote. Women who wanted to vote or be elected were considered indecent at that time anyway. (by Tories) By the way, in Germany all adult women (21 years old) were allowed to vote from 1919 and could even be elected to the Reichstag themselves (Klara Zetkin.) Typical terrible new ideas from these Germans! 😉
I always attributed this to Agatha Christie, but it was written while she was busy in WW I, I found out it was a Scotsman named John Buchan, Great movie, wish they made more like this
There are more books by Buchan about the main character... four more I think... I've read up to the end of the fourth and they're all worth a read and give great historic detail about the first world war and after.
John Buchan's book provided little more for this film than the title and the first few minutes. It mystifies me why film makers remain so convinced that the as-written plots from great thrillers do not make good films, given that they never try it.
Gee golly gosh , rather enjoyed that little adventure old chaps and suffragettes jolly good show . Great locations , great cars , great costumes , great cast ................nice ending . Loved the submarine bit , glad to see the 'boche' get their commeuppance . Now for a nice cup of tea .

Just come across from your post of the 1970s version, so thanks also for posting this one! Pretty sure i was glued to this the first time round back in the day. Big fan of Rupert Penry Jones, there seemed to be a period in the mid-late 2000s where he was in everything, and rightly so, as he's very handsome 😅 whilst i prefer the Hitchcock classic, despite its inaccuracies, this is still a solid adaptation and an entertaining watch. Thanks again! 😊

Such a pleasure to watch this since I saw it on PBS and again somewhere I can’t remember. Both lead actors have such good chemistry. Excellent supporting actors too. I’m sure I’ll watch it again. Thank you for posting.❤😂😊
Terrific movie! I’ve liked all of the versions of 39 Steps but this is my favorite by far. None of the versions follow the novel very closely and I’m ok with that. This is the most entertaining of a good group.
Blows chunks on the Powell version which was horrible, a real fail. The original Hitchcock had the nuances the others could not match and well, Donat was far above in acting ability and style of the other thee leads . . . they were not even in his league. The previous version was probably the best though, its supporting acting was fantastic.
Glad that you're open to enjoying both, despite having watched the Hitchcock version (or did you watch the 1959 one?) first! What I like about this one is that if I had randomly watched a few minutes of it anywhere in the movie, I would know what book I was watching. The Hitchcock one hardly has any overlap with the characters and storylines in the book; if it hadn't been titled the same, and if the main character hadn't been Richard Hannay, I could have watched most of it without realising what I was watching. It's like if you put soda in a bottle that had held chocolate milk, and you keep being reminded of chocolate in between fizzy swallows. And that was the style of most of Hollywood's book --> adaptations, so audiences at the time probably loved it for that. It's very much of a standard, early 1930s film, and anyone who loves that genre will be able to enjoy it on those merits. For my part, it was really fun for me when I first stumbled across this version a decade ago, and discovered it was actually the same substance inside as it said on the bottle! A little of a different recipe than the original story, but still recognisable! This one borrows some scenes from the 1935 & 1959 movies, and adds its own things, but it is much truer to the *feel* of the book. It's the same KIND of story, that early spy novel genre, and Richard Hannay is actually recognisable as the character from Buchan's 5 novels! Rupert Penry-Jones was a great choice.
Wonderful movie because there was no fornication or cussing and the good guys survive and won! I was actually surprised by her being a SSA agent and I hardly get surprised by anything in prose or in film. Congratulations! 🎉👏 (That ventriloquist dummy was the second creepiest I have ever seen! Ug! 😁 Cheers! 2024
Great movie. Hannay is the English James Bond, Victoria Sinclair is a femme fatale with clothes on. They eventually have a passionate moment never forgetting their first alliegence is to Britain. Hannay runs over hills, falls on rocks, is shot at, is chased by Germans, and with it all manages to always have his suit and tie intact. 😊
I think I've seen all the productions of The 39 Steps as well as reading the book a couple of times and I think this is the best of the lot. Whichever version, it's a 'ripping yarn'.
I’ve loved all versions of this film even though none is exactly like the book, what film ever is? Loved all the leading men too although they’re all so different. Robert Donat, Kenneth More, Robert Powell and last, but not least, Rupert Penry-Jones.
