On the other hand - do I want to carry a dedicated glass breaker as an everyday carry? M4 Bailout is a great edc knife that carries light and slim, and it has a bonus glass breaker that doesn't interfere with my comfort of making a sandwich. And for that I really like it as a whole.

The Bailout is one of my favorite Benchmade knives since I got the M4 version. Never thought I’d have a tanto as an EDC, but it’s a lot more useful than I expected. Btw if the glass breaker ever starts bothering me the way it seems to bother so many, I’ll just take it to the belt sander and be rid of it.

True story: Driving to work one day and saw for a split second a strage sight... what appeared to be a car fly thru the air. Surely, this was something else. As I continued around the bend in the road there laid a nice new Volvo upside down on the embankment, very nearly in the roadway. The car had driven across a church parking lot (obviously fast as hell) thru a telephone pole, and landed upside down. This JUST happened. Like 1 second before I rounded the corner. Naturally, being a man, I stopped to help. The car was still on and running full throttle but smoking badly. My first thought was holy shit. My second thought was I gotta get whomever is in there out before this car catches fire. Me and a random soldier in full uniform (odd to see randomly, but comforting) were able to wrench the door open and I saw an older black lady buckled in having a seizure. Shit. I tell her she'd been in a wreck and is having a seizure and if she can hear me that she's gonna be fine and help is on the way. She seemed to have the seat belt digging in and I feared she might not be able to breathe so I used my SOG trident to cut the belt and me and the soldier lowered her to the roof of the car. I tried to turn the car off but couldn't. Thinking back I'm sure its cause it was still in gear but I didnt think about that at the time. I heard a commotion from the parking lot and it was another black lady crying and flipping out. I talked to her and turn out it was her sister. So I told her the driver had a seizure and we hugged for a minute and I tried to calm her down. In minutes the ambulance was down the road so I decided to get my car which I left in the road out of the way. I went to work still shaking from the adrenaline and still think about that day every time i drive by that church. I hope the driver was ok. Crazy day. Never needed a glass breaker yet but I do have a benchmade escape tool I think it's called a Houdini in my car now for just such an emergency and have since taken a CPR class and a stop the bleed class... both of which should be required in school. Thanks for all the cool vids, dude!
This was very refreshing (the glass-breaker rant). And the video brought back two memories. One, setting up the 10mm poly for my garden in Rockhampton. And Two, I used to buy those purpose-made glass-breaker/seatbelt cutter tools that mounted on a door pillar or wherever you reckon is a good spot. The moulded clamp held the tool really well and the glass hammer and the belt cutter were tools that really worked, because they weren't half-size add-ons to another tool.
Agreed on the glass breaker. Watched a hard use video of a Benchmade Contego years ago in which the entire backspacer broke from using the glass breaker. And that had a profoundly negative effect on my young knife guy brain.
Another great video with several LOL moments. Cheers, Pete! As one can now get a Bugout with M4 and G10 scales in the same (or at least pretty close) OD green for about the same amount of money, I think the only correct answer to "which one?" is "both." :)
I had an omega spring fail in my bugout, and I dont know how it happened, it just felt extra weak when I pulled it out after carrying it all day, then my knife was shutting weird and somehow the blade cut through the spring... I replaced the springs with a little thicker guage after market omegas and have had no problem since then. The axis lock is so much fun.
I very much doubt the omega spring was in such a position that the blade could have cut through unless already broken. There just isn't enough room for the the spring to move into that position. I had an omega spring in my right side just snap in half from fatigue and no matter how much I used the knife both pieces stayed in place because they just had no where to go in between the frame and the scale. BM just uses terrible springs for the axis lock. I ended up getting aftermarket springs like you did but I had to bend them since they were too strong to replicate the feel of the old ones.

So now, months later, do you still love the bailout? Because I love the bailout. And im rocking the 3v grivory version. It has reigned Supreme in my pocket over the last 12 months, near exclusively, dethroning manix2 in s110v.
Hey Pete, @ 6:02, I assume you are cutting the stump of some tasty broccoli to throw it away? If that's so, I just wanted to let you know that you can eat the stump just like you can eat the rest of the vegetable, you don't have to throw it away. Of course, only if you want to. But yeah, it tastes literally the same as the rest, just a bit crunchier :)
I don't mind it, don't notice it myself. I've used it one time to open a jar of pickles I couldn't open. It pokes a nice little hole in lid. Although I'd rather not have it, the knife looks better without it..
Who do those (very large) vertebrae belong to? I found this vid very informative. I had NO idea that Australians ate omelettes. Also, had never heard another man say “Touch it up on my pants”… I like it. Next time I’m at a bus stop and need to strop a blade - I may just ask a gentleman nearby if I may “touch it up on his pants”. I foresee a positive outcome.
M4 suits a folding knife better in my opinion. I’ve had the puukko in 3v and the toughness is optimized, not strength/stability. Apparently they’re treating it to 60hrc now which is appropriate for 3v. All my opinion. I’m sure the 3v is a good enough option, just not the perfect steel/heat treat for the application.
The Bailout is a cool knife for sure, and M4 is a great steel, but I just don’t see the price tag being justified relative to just getting a 20CV Bareknuckle. Maybe if edge retention is of utmost importance, but the Bareknuckle will be just as sturdy, action is basically just as good, it’ll be better in hand, and you’ll never have to worry about breaking an omega spring.
I have always liked the bailout, I'd do the same if I ever got one! Also, out of curiosity what boots are you wearing in the beginning part of this video if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Pete, did you hear about the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit MXBS which was made for the Australian army? It has one hand opening plain and serrated/recurve blades. Apparently it's going to be available for the general public to buy later this year.
been using my 3V one daily for a year now. Got it and found some used aluminum scales for it so it looks like an M4 one. The pommel is at least comfy not like the glass breaker. been a great knife and serves as my main user. A small amount of the blade coating is wearing off from hard use at this point.
Man the Bailout just hasn’t grabbed my attention at all. I was excited back when they did the initial run in 3V but after all of that negative press about the HT I feel like it just kinda fizzled out, which is a shame because M4 is great. Im sure that backspacer makes a huge difference though. Also, tangent: you need to check out Yakuza: Like A Dragon my dude.
i think you could have a glass breaker if it was part of the blade and would recess in the handle when the blade is deployed. its also cheaper to manufacture that way.
Just a reminder, cars in the US are required to have laminated glass on side windows since 2017. European cars already use laminated glass for a long time (Mercedes at least since 2012, though not exclusively). So, make sure you check your windows before you put an utterly useless glass-breaker in your car "for safety".
True! I'm a professional firemans for 14 years and carry a cheap 3 euros dedicated glassbreaker in my suit pocket. Regular pointy glass breakers I agree are STUPID. The one on the back of my bailout I wouldn’t consider a standard glass breaker more of a bar that I actually use often for prying, opening bottles and hitting/ hammering things.

But really. Does anyone else recommend any other knife channels? Thanks for all the non knife related content as well. 👍🏼
You kill me man I’m laughing so hard right now at the diagram of an omega spring
did you wash the knife between various tasks, or did you get soda and fertilizer in your tomatos and sausage?
BTW loved the video and the knife. I don’t have any tanto knives, but I would love to ad a few to my collection the Buck Marksman and Cold Steel Recon 1 are the first and foremost buddy...take care.
You're so damn funny Pete, keep em comin! Don't neglect persona though, your JOY DEPENDS ON IT lol.
Great video, that Persona 5 music and gameplay 🥰
I feel violated by the choice of music.
But since it’s your video, I apparently enjoyed the experience.
Keep up the great work bud
At last! A voice of truth crying from the wilderness.
PS... My MTech glass breaker reacted very well to the ministrations of a bench grinder.
Ok, but now you're going to need to review the VIctorinox Rescue tool!
Heck yea its garden time!!
Hope you or your family isn't affected by the floods, take care hermano
glass breaker and seat belt cutter combo is what i carried in Iraq but the glass breaker was still absolutely useless because all the vehicles have super thick laminated plastic and glass armor for windows lol
I gotta finish Persona 5, were you playing that or moved on to Strikers? I was wondering if I could remove the little glass breaker nub on my favorite low budget knife, Sanrenmu 9031 roller bearing champ.BTW, over/ under 25 on the times Pete says AL-YOU-MINIUM :-D
This epidode was hilarious! Great job Pete 😆😆
So now, months later, do you still love the bailout? Because I love the bailout. And im rocking the 3v grivory version. It has reigned Supreme in my pocket over the last 12 months, near exclusively, dethroning manix2 in s110v.
yep, still like it a lot!
How do you now open your beer?
Great video. Love it.
You should have clicked “I’m feeling lucky” with the search haha
Literally never had an issue with the glass breaker. It's not uncomfortable. No hot-spots , nothing .... unless you have little girls hands...😅
At first I thought you were saying Amiga spring, but I guess that's before your time as a gamer.
Ahhh before the console wars we had amiga vs atari st
Ten times better mixing compost with your soil than potting mix. Give it a go mate :)
Holy cow, you like your dairy.
The real life rescuers used pens with glass breakers like mine, you need to use the search terms "pen" and "hero"
Daaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnng @ 11:15
all we need are carbone Omeeega springs and they would never fail
Can't hide that Wiki search, Lorena was a stage 5 clinger.
I see you are using the cheapest timer tap from Bunnings. I feel a timer tap review coming on :)
I don't mind it, don't notice it myself. I've used it one time to open a jar of pickles I couldn't open. It pokes a nice little hole in lid. Although I'd rather not have it, the knife looks better without it..
100% concur! Glass breakers silly
Reminds me of all those crappy m tech tacticiool mall ninja knives
I'm sorry, my mind wanders, but you got a heck of an echo going on in your kitchen.
Thanks for the review!
All jokes aside Pete, would love to know what your thoughts are on the M4 over the 3V version. Have you ever had your hands on Benchmade's 3V?
M4 suits a folding knife better in my opinion. I’ve had the puukko in 3v and the toughness is optimized, not strength/stability. Apparently they’re treating it to 60hrc now which is appropriate for 3v.
All my opinion. I’m sure the 3v is a good enough option, just not the perfect steel/heat treat for the application.
@@lindboknifeandtool Cool, thank you for the information.
Lets be real how expensive are omega springs
Is it possible to grind the factory backspacer flush with the end of the handle?
I removed my glass breaker too and ground that Tanto into a drop point and it magically became what the Bugout should have always been 😂
I couldn't agree more regarding ridiculous glass breakers.
Biggest gripe with microtechs honestly... Why is there a stupid ball bearing on a pyramid off the ass end?
No problems with frozen waterline, in Australia?
I have always liked the bailout, I'd do the same if I ever got one! Also, out of curiosity what boots are you wearing in the beginning part of this video if you don't mind me asking?
Need more cooking videos.
Yes!
ummm.... couldn't you just grind the glass breaker point off and then not have to pay for a new back spacer?
Hello, I'm Ron Davidson from the International Organization for the Prevention of Tantos in Herb and Other Mincing. We have noticed that you are using a tanto blade with no belly and no bench clearance on the handle to mince chives. We implore you to switch the Spydiechef to prevent this heinous abuse. We would like to resolve this matter outside the courts. Please indicate your intent to comply.
I like my titanium scales for it
Hows the edge retention and sharpenability of the 3v steel?
Man the Bailout just hasn’t grabbed my attention at all. I was excited back when they did the initial run in 3V but after all of that negative press about the HT I feel like it just kinda fizzled out, which is a shame because M4 is great. Im sure that backspacer makes a huge difference though. Also, tangent: you need to check out Yakuza: Like A Dragon my dude.
I put titanium scales on my 3v version but kept the lanyard on it
i think you could have a glass breaker if it was part of the blade and would recess in the handle when the blade is deployed. its also cheaper to manufacture that way.
If I fall to the sea in my car I'll just open the window to get out before the water get to it. If I passed out, well, it wont matter. And if I wake up? That just not gonna happen... Sry peeps...
i think microtech puts a glass breaker on their knives as a legal thing..maybe in case of some court case it could be considered a glass breaker rather than a knife. i have no idea but that’s my theory. in the same way brass knuckles are sold as “paper weights” cuz of some little nibs
Me while you're stabbing the coke can:
Stop! Stop! He's already dead!!
Can stab a can with a spike. LOL
Regular pointy glass breakers I agree are STUPID. The one on the back of my bailout I wouldn’t consider a standard glass breaker more of a bar that I actually use often for prying, opening bottles and hitting/ hammering things.
That's the standard version. The aluminum handle ones have the glass breaker tip on that bar. They're also about $100 more.
Love the review, but you overcooked the shit outta that omelette. Damn.
What did you use for the replacement backspacer?
