Honestly, I love Dex Mode on my Samsung. I have used it a number of times for special events because having one device to rule them all is any tech enthuiast's dream and docking a phone is far easier than moving a desktop or even a laptop. It's good to see there are ways to get desktop mode going on normally unsupported hardware. Hopefully things only get better from here.
@@vincwong8498 It's most certainly not futureproof, but nothing really is. in 4 to 5 years you'll be upgrading whatever parts you have in your desktop if you want to be AAA gaming on high settings with the newest titles. I'm still on an S21 using dex and I still love it. so there is definitely long term use to be had out of it, but nothing will ever be a permanent solution.
@vincwong8498 8gb of ram is sufficient for mobile tasks for at least 3 more years. In 3 years mobiles will ship with 16gb regularly and probably up to 32gb by 2027.

If you can only afford a cell phone and a TV, get one with DEX and you suddenly have a basic PC in your pocket capable of playing XBOX on it. So you have essentially, a phone, a basic web browsing PC and an Xbox sitting in your pocket for ONE COST... that's the appeal.
I bought a Galaxy S21 because it specifically has dex... I'm still using it and gaming on it as well. It's a great alternative to my main PC for some things and the fact other phones haven't added similar capabilities baked into the phone is mind boggling to me.

Samsung should really note dex on their premium handset, its why I stay with Samsung. Another of peeps don't know about it, it really useful with dongles and file transfers. A good chrome book alternative too
Whats the price bump in your region? I got the ROG3 basic for ₹45K first hand years ago. Now the ROG8 basic variant is ₹91K LOL. Now with less battery, worse audio chip, smaller screen, no accessory support, what is even the point.
@@HolyRamanRajya in Malaysia the rog 2 was under RM3k, now its over rm5k, not worth it for me. Plus my Rog 2 motherboard eventually melted, the fan was doing nothing, red magic have the better set up with internal fan.
Can't wait for Phones to reach PC levels of performance where they can run Windows or Linux and used to play AAA games on external display at acceptable framerate and resolution; I know it is around the corner.
I knew, probably from a prior video of yours, that there was/is a way to force phones without a fully featured desktop mode to use the stock Google provided version. I'd forgotten how to do it though. Thank you.
Great Video. I have a ROG 6, had a ROG 5 before. All great Phones, but close to Zero updates and the 5G Modem is complete crap. A Android phone without updates at that premium price is just a joke 🤮
The main issue with android/arm devices has never been the hardware performance, but actually the software. Apart from playing android games which are to my taste garbage, and emulating up to PS2 you don't have to play other stuff, even though on paper that phone had equal power with a midrange laptop. But that's why x86 and Windows/linux system offer so much better things. As long as we don't have a viable linux/windows on arm, android will be always limited.
Very true, but for mobile basic workloads like word documents, spreadsheets, web based research etc. a phone in desktop mode is literally a basic computer in your pocket at this point. many of the basic uses the average pc owner uses a pc for these days, can be done on a phone. Things like dex blur those lines that much further.
Apple solved this nicely with rosetta and their app code translation. I guess it'll eventually happen with phones too. For now there's box86, but it's like 10x slower, geekerwan had a nice vid of turning a nintendo switch to a pc (steam deck?) with it.

Did you try using the rog charger dock ???? You might unlock the keyboard and mouse mapping on the game genie , if it works it's a good alternative rather than using the official asus professional dock which is sold out everywhere 😢

I don't know about the steam deck itself, but some USB/HDMI hubs have ethernet adapters built in and the phone works with a hard wired connection. As long as the phone recognized the steam deck's dock fully, the hardline connection will work. There's really no reason it shouldn't since it's USB-C...
if you are rich enough, you can buy it as daily driver. when it's broken, you can just buy it again. if you're not, please use specialized device just for that task.
They need a more descriptive name for these devices because 'Phone' has really become an obsolete term. In this video you never even mention telephony (no one ever does !)

Your games only run at 60Hz because your adapter only has a HDMI 1.4 port, and the phone's DP Alt Mode will only support VESA standard resolution presets.
Why does mine not look like that? Am I missing some settings? I did the 4 you mention and it shows up on the monitor but doesn't look as clean or remotely the same as yours

If you've checked SD 8 Gen 2 emulation with the AYN Odin 2, they said it can basically emulate anything and everything, the problem is the Yuzu software limitations. Not the raw processing power of the chip, so the is obviously more powerful, but will still be limited by the emulation software for not, until more further updates are done.

@@DavilkSus I mean, if the market demands it, it could happen, consumer ARM chips are weak by design, not by limitation (look at Apple's M1s). The problem is that not enough people want powerful ARM chips to justify the development and licensing costs.

Prices are not cheap. However, there are many people who do not need a computer. I think it's worth investing in if you only use a smartphone.

Great test. Would you test it against 4k 144 display thru type-c direct? Seems 8 gen 3 is the first snapdragon with DP 1.3 or 1.4 over type-c.

you can bypass that with any dock but if you restart the phone you need to bypass it again

most PC games are not compatible with arm chips tho, and emulation would be tough
@@MRawashit's slow. ARM chips are too weak for that. Even my 16t 5 GHz Ryzen struggle to run some games via emulation (I tested). And the GPU....
