Yes it reminds me of Steely Dan too. But you have to know this tune was co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams, who mentioned both Donald Fagen and Stevie Wonder as influences on the CBS Sunday morning show.
The thing, as I scan the comments, is that Mayer really can't be labeled... as he not only provides glimpses of recognizable "other" artists but then clearly establishes a very unique and personal sound (and look). This guy is the real deal and his band is great. For a guy my age who craves Steely Dan music, Hall and Oates, and Billy Joel it's so refreshing to have a contemporary artist who can measure up. Though totally different, I can say the same thing about Brandi Carlile who is just unreal and another current artist passed on to me by my 25 year old daughter. I've seen Brandi and her amazing band but now have to find a way to see Mayer.
He really can't be labeled. A little bit of R&B, soul, funk, pop, rock. I'm always amazed and the next song I hear because it sounds nothing like he previously has done.
7thvenom I have no idea what you just said. And what is "black music"? What does that mean? You mean funk, jazz, soul, r & b? So those genres can only be done by black people? You just sounded like a total fucking tool. Don't open your mouth again. You're making the world more stupid.
7thvenom What are you talking about? Black music? Could you be any more racist? And what is he supposed to do invent a new genre of music? This isnt ripping off anything...
There are serious shades of Steely Dan especial with the melody and in the chorus. The band is well versed. I absolutely love this piece but he is so much more and you never know what you're going to get. The band is so talented, it is such a tight delivery. A song or two I may not like but still never disappointed.
Mayer Hawthorne and the County put on an awesome stage show. I feel like its rare to find performers that are actually worth watching live but they definitely qualify.
WOW THE WORLD HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU MAYER ABSOLUTELY AWESOME SONG YOUR A BIG STAR IN THE MAKING . GREAT VOICE AND VIBE GET INTO MY HEAD AND WILL NEVER LEAVE ME THAT TUNE SO LIKE STEELY DAN . CANT STOP PLAYING IT RECORD OF THE WEEK ON RADIO 2 BBC SHOULD BE RECORD OF THE YEAR SO WELL PRODUCED
This is not really my kind of music but the salute to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker is unmistakeable. Very nicely done and great to hear a vibe that did not originate in the 21st century.
Oh my goodness this song reminds of Steely Dan and growing up in South Philly ❤❤❤
Good song

Watch the "where does this door go?" Documentary it explains that both Mayer Hawthorne & Pharrell Williams are greatly inspired by Steely Dan

How have I never heard this before? Harkens to old Steely Dan. I wish my mom were alive to hear this.

Cracking toon of this decade and great band too. To me the bass line is out of the world. 10/10.
One of the best out right now.
there hasn’t even been an average album yet. They are all 5-star. I’m feeling “Black Friday” in that opening.
Never gets old...how can you not dance
Mayer we're waiting for you in Poland!!!
the guitars give me chills... woooooooooo
Mayer is amazing. Get your Spotify tuned in!

Such a great live performer, rocked it out in Asheville couple of weeks ago.
Gotta be No1 in UK

très bon artiste je l'ai découvert au Dôme de Marseille en première partie de la tournée de Bruno Mars et franchement ça déchire !!!!!!!!!

Beautiful Babe! I Love ya!
Oh this is the shit again right here .. hey ...ho...hey ..
hate to say it but there's a smattering of billy joel in there along with the steely dan harmonies and guitar riffs
# Karen Cavanagh
Don't hear JOEL but whenI first heard this I thought STEELY DAN, directly.
2022
Bob Seger meets Billy Joel; Steely Dan bridge.......
(Go ahead, have your fit....)
I can feel a twinge of Sting in the pre-chorus, what do ya'll think?
Very much so. The Police are in the house.
Why does everyone have to compare him to other artists? If I hear one more steely dan comparison i will throw a fit.
Steely RIP so so bad !!
7thvenom the only similarity is the instrumental, the actual singing differs completely.
It's not a bad thing being compared to Steely Dan.
Album version sounds more like Donald Fagen than this performance. Both in voice and harmonic arrangement.
Mayer Hawthorne is a big fan of Steely Dan, and has publicly said that Becker and Fagen were inspiration for his album.
i prefer him with his specs..hehe..
I wanna hear them play SKAAAAAAAAA
Why the hell he hasen't glasses anymore?
Because the fools self conscience like you and I friend.
I have glasses and i love it to wear :)
***** good question ! why ?
Laser or contacts!
sounds like more like ducktales theme song
rumor is you sold out.
I think I hear a hint of steely dan in this song ! mmmm yes steely dan.
