- Over the last few years I have been on a journey to find a bible with commentary from the early church fathers. As I tried different options I kept finding myself disappointed. It’s not that what I found was bad, it was just sort of incomplete. That is when I discovered SVS Press. They have a four volume set contain commentaries and wisdom from the early church immediately following the original twelve apostles. The only bummer is two of the volumes are currently out of print, however, I was able to land one of them. Check out this video to see what I think you need to have a nice balanced view of the writings of the early church within the context of the scriptures they are talking about. A huge thank you to SVS Press for allowing me to review a copy of Grace For Grace: The Psalter and the Holy Fathers. You inspired me to buy Grace for Grace from SVS Press! Pricey, but as you noted, worth the cost for the wealth of insights from the Fathers. I want to dedicate a year to studying the Psalms, reciting the Kathismas, and drawing upon the wisdom of the Ancients all the way through Charles Spurgeon and his Treasury of David (commentary on the Psalms), which should serve as a more modern/Protestant complement to Grace for Grace. I also bought A Psalter for Prayer by Holy Trinity Monastery. These three books will be a solid three-legged stool I can park myself on for the coming year!
Outstanding!
I have all these books as well. I love them all
I still have both of these. Bought them in my Eastern Orthodox days.
I’d love to find the Wisdom Let Us Attend one.
What made you leave Christ’s unchanged church?
For Kindle there is a complete ante-nicene and nicene and post-nicene fathers collection for only like $4. It’s not bad.
I’m more of a book guy.
Have you looked at the Ancient Christian Commentary series from IVP? It has patristic commentary over the entire Bible.
I have heard of it and it is in the price range I am trying to avoid!
@@anickelsworthbiblereviews understand that. I was able to pick it up over two and a half years through IVP's subscription program. I got a volume once a month. Made it more affordable for me.
Interesting. I didn’t even know they did stuff like that any more.
Awesome video. God bless ☦️
Great review! Does Grace for Grace only include the Psalms or any other prayers/scripture? Also... where in the world did you find that copy of Isaiah Through the Ages? 😅
Grace for Grace is indeed only the Psalms. I found the Isaiah Through the Ages at an Orthodox Church’s bookstore. It was the find of finds! Only paid $30 for it.
@A Nickels Worth Bible Reviews Wow! That's awesome! That's for the quick response. 🙂
I bought The Bible And The Holy Fathers - Thinking that I was getting something like Grace for Grace.
Can anyone point me towards a resource that helps me as a study guide?
I am Roman Catholic, interested in Orthodox tradition.
Thank you.
Yeah. The Bible and the Holy Father is set up way differently. I don’t know anything like we are both looking for.
Hi @gr-wp7oh you can purchase Orthodox Dogmatic Theology by Protopresbyter Michael Pomozansky (physical book 😁). God bless ☦️
Consider this: the Grace for Grace is counted according to the Septuagint, not the Masoretic. Also, it’s organised according to the Kathismas which are meant to be sung at Matins and Vespers in groupings. It’s not a verse by verse version.
Yeah. It’s such a cool edition along with the others.
Studying Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant theologies is probably just a good way to go about Christianity as as a whole ;)
You need more bookshelves .😆
I know a guy…
Right !
