I was there last week on my way to Kassel with work left there in 94 with 1 D and D moved to Paderborn and hated it only the gates are left standing very sad made me think of us all leaving there in our hot hatches to race to calais happy days but will never forget
Wow -wonderful piece of work bringing back so many memories of my time in BAOR. I served with 1 RS from 1985-91, from Pte to Cpl and single man to married so a real formative period for me. Still serving now but cherish those days as some of the best over the past 31 years of service. Thank Kev.
Wow , what a trip on the memorylane , teary eyes and goosebumps , seeing the Church where I got married in 76 , the First Queens was stationed here at the time. The Naafi where we had our Christmasparties..I remember sliding down the road to the Guardroom New year, trying to get a Taxi after the Party and the Guard came up to us and helped us down lol ..sweet bitter memories ..thank you so much for this video !!!!!!!
My dad was stationed there in 1966-1969. I was 10-13 years of age. Werl was one of the best times of my life. I have so many memories of it and the people. So sad to see it this way.
Such fantastic memories here. Quite poignant as well. I served my time here as an Armourer in the REME 1981 - 85 attached to 1BW (RHR).. Seeing the old armourers shop was a lump in the throat moment.. Thanks Kev.
I was a bit choked watching this. Werl was my first posting in 1978 after my training at Bassingbourne barracks. As a young 18 year old bandsman I joined 1st Battalion Queens Regimental Band under the then newly appointed Band Master Phil Hills. Werl was my first experience of being abroad and I have the fondest memories as a start to my 20 year army career. My first experience of duvet's (no more bed blocks) and I even passed my driving test here too. This is the first time I've seen the barracks since I left Werl at the end of 1979 but returned to Clifton Barracks in Minden some years later with two queens. I remember marching up to the church the Kev shows ahead of the battalion on Sunday church parade (we had to attend in those days) and to look at how it's all fallen into disrepair is very sad. One of my bucket list promises is to return to visit Werl at some point soon and take my kids too. I concur with Mark Graves…Thanks for the memories!
Wonderful poignant video, beautifully put together. I served there in the REME attached to 2nd Queens 19701-73. Some of these shots, mainly the workshop ones I can still hear the voices. I remember the guardhouse well too.... spent a few weeks in there, rascal that I was.
Thank you Kevin for taking the photographs and uploading them. I too have many memories of the camp, I was there in 1972-1974 with the second Bn the Queens Regt. Played many a game of ten-pin bowls in the bowling alley. The NAFFI was run by a Mr & Mrs Webb, she was a German and Mr Webb was I belive was a welshman. Hard to think all this was over 40 years ago.
My mate bill sent me to the web site to be fare I went through the pics and well it was almost like I could here voices laghfder I woke crying as I remmeberd the fun we had in Werl the locals the were wounderfull and to see this ghis lovely vid brings back loads of good memorys its allso like I lost a good friend and its llike im in morning I no it sounds wierd but I lost contact with many local friends so thanks for the memories
I was there 1972-74 fond memories also I got loads of photos,I was always getting bollocked for getting my camera out in N.I.Creggan,Saltau,Sennelager,Canada,I was in B coy then moved to the battalion signal plt.Wish I could find my old mates Paul Wilde and Lenny Meade no good with the records office, some names I do remember,,,,Jesse James Sgt.Ted Heath,Eric Witcher,Dennis Cuts,Ted Bicker, and many others, also I still got the Battalion newspapers that were published whilst we were in Ireland I must get these photos into a collection and post em on line, well all the best me o'le muckers keep well and all the best.🍺🍻👍Cheers PS.i also put this note on another video the camp.
Hi served here with 1st Bn black Watch (RHR) Many happy and sad memories, Nice place to serve, the people of Werl were very nice to us. one of My favourite memories was of the Pipes and Drums Doing Crimean reveille they came marching out of the mist onto the square on a very cold morning, they echo and scene was one that i will never forget.
Had the pleasure of working at 'Waltons Mountain' in 1987-89 with 113 Pro Coy RMP. Met some fantastic blokes and girls during that time who I still meet up with. Had some fun with the Jocks next door too, some good lads there. Hoping to visit this year and have a look myself. Very sad to see it in this state, but pleased the locals havent forgotten our presence.
remember it so well, I served there REME attached to 2nd Queens in the mid '70's. Brilliant posting. Went back several years ago and the LAD office still had the LAD sign on the wall
Brilliant Video, Kev. I am from Werl, and thanks to the camp i became friends with alot of people in the Armed Forces. And because of those friends i played in the Pipes and Drums and moved to Scotland where i am now for 10 years. They warned me about the weather thought lol Again, thanks Kev
I served with 1 Devon and Dorset there until we moved up to Paderborn. Went back to see it in Feb 2016. Broke my heart to see the state it's in now. I went to my old block and stood in my old bedspace. Felt quite sad knowing I was the last soldier to sleep where I was. The cookhouse to the left of the Parade square (with Bn HQ at your back) has been completely demolished. And the RSM would have a fit if he saw the crap on the square now. Very sad. But memories of a younger man will always be happier for the time spent there. What happened to the original music from this? can you send it to me perhaps?
Yes i would like to hear the original music again to this as i have been searching for ages trying to find it! Could you please send it to me if possible? 😊
Such a shame to see it in this state. I worked there 1991-1994 firstly in the RMP kitchen/dining hall then that closed & I moved 2main cookhouse and sergeants mess. Have happy memories of those times. Made many friends from all walks of life there and had fun!
Hello Kev. Hope you don't mind but I am going to share this vid with my facebook mates from 1 Queens. My first posting when I joined the Battalion was Werl. memories are great, so sad to see the barracks now
Let's set the record straight : The Royal 22nd (Van Doos) never served in Fort Victoria. They were next door at Fort St. Louis. Ft. Victoria was the base of 4 Field Squdron Royal Canadian Engineers until August 1970. Fort Anne was also redundant having its name changed to Ft. St. Louis Annex in 1969 when the Black Watch moved back to Canada.
Hunter0779, Thank you for your comments, I also agree with you, we had some really great times back then, I will also be one that will be staying behind when our troops leave. I was also stationed in Minden - Cliffton Barracks in the 80's ( home to: 11 Armd Bde until 1st June 1994 ) unfortunatly my barracks is no more, only a few buildings remain, but the general layout of the former camp has gone.
like the video and photography but not sure about your camp numbers i served with 2 queens from 73-75 at camp 6 and the rmp's were next door in camp 7 the camp on the other side of the road was the annex nether heard of camp 8 or was that a previous number used by the canadians
Hi Kevin, is there any chance you can send me the original music piece to this video, as i have been searching for it since changed!? I would appreciate that much x
1.07, sounds pathetic I know but thats where my Military carreer ended , was demobbed by the 1st Bn Black Watch . Saw my kit lobbed into a corner , then my RMP No 2 hat flew , almost shouted at the LCpl to be a bit more careful. I didnt, got a grip and realised its over

I did have a tear in my eye whilst wandering around the camp, it was so peaceful that I stopped on many occasions to reflect on how it used to be.
Thank you Kevin for taking the photographs and uploading them. I too have many memories of the camp, I was there in 1972-1974 with the second Bn the Queens Regt. Trying to find the original music for this video from 2012, it was mistakenly removed, but I cannot who created it.
So sad, I was based here from 85 until the end of 91 with 1st Bn The Royal Scots.
