I would have any of those listed take the place of Quick and The Dead. It was an entertaining movie. But it has no business being on a best Western movie list.
"Unforgiven" is better than "True Grit", more important for the evolution of the genre. "Unforgiven" is the ultimate western. You also forgot "Dancing with Wolves" and the Unknown "Seraphim Falls", directed by David Von Ancken (2006), violent and surreal. As for the TV series, the best is "Into the West" (2005), involving and very touching.
My favorite Westerns include The Magnificent 7 (both versions), Back to the Future Part 3, Wagons East, Blazing Saddles, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, The Hateful 8, A Million Ways To Die, Tombstone, Django Unchained, & Rango

Fact. “Hell Or High Water” was written by Taylor Sheridan, creator of the modern western series, ”Yellowstone”, and its spin-offs, “1883” and “1923”. He also wrote Denis Villeneuve’s crime thriller, “Sicario”.
@michaelmonthey5974 Taylor Sheridan also wrote and directed Wind River (2017). But my favourite out of his American Frontier Trilogy is Hell or High Water. Sicario and Wind River are great but Hell or High Water is something special

Kevin Costner paid perfect homage to classic western masterpieces, specifically: .My Darling Clementine (1946), directed By John Ford .High Noon (1952), directed By Fred Zinneman .Rio Bravo (1959), directed by Howard Hawks You can tell Kevin Costner has great admiration for the classics and he practically made an amalgam of previous masterpieces and ended up making one himself. Great film.

If you're going to include movies with western tropes and influences, like Logan and Hell or High Water, you have to mention Rob Zombies "Devils Rejects" which utilizes a plethora of western tropes and spaghetti western inspired cinematography. It has the uber-violence of Peckinpah and the extreme close ups of Sergio Leone. Not to mention the quintessential antihero/outlaw ending, gunned down in a hail of bullets. (I wrote my thesis for a western film class on this btw)😂
I can’t believe that magnificent 7 remake is not on this list. Not the greatest movie, but it was fun, action packed, great cast each with their own speciality. Just fun. This and 3:10 to Yuma were my favorite westerns since tombstone and unforgiven
Genuinely can't understand how it's possible to make this list and not include No Country for Old Men - should absolutely be in the top 5 (it's essentially the same brand of neo-Western as Hell or High Water, so it should qualify). Also, There Will Be Blood should be here somewhere.
Buster Scruggs needs his own movie. I kept hoping they were gonna circle back around and tie it all together somehow, maybe feature something from before his untimely death, but nope
Couple of phenomenal modern western shows if anyone's interested: Hell on Wheels - AMC - Don't be fooled by the name, it isn't a Sons of Anarchy knock-off, and that's probably why this show didn't catch on. Hell on Wheels is what they call the traveling camp installing one of the two major railroads during the race to the west. Taking place soon after the Civil War it divides attention between all the races and players of the day... the Irish, Chinese, freed African Americans, native Americans, etc... all alongside the residual tension between ex Union and Confederate soldiers. First season is cliche western feel, but characters and stories develop wonderfully through the rest of the series. Subjects can get dark, things weren't easy those days, but isn't that the interest? Lead character is badass, and the intro song is the best I've ever heard, the reason I never once skipped the intro. Binge worthy. Was on Netflix but now I think AMC, tubi, and freevee. Godless - Netflix - A runaway outlaw seeks refuge on a ranch run by a woman alongside her mother-in-law and her coming-of-age son on the outskirts of a town of women left over after a mine accident killed all their men. This is a mini-series with one season, short and sweet. Jeff Daniels is the villain? Why yes he is. Netflix original. There's others I'm sure, let me know I'd love to hear'em. Yeah yeah I didn't forget about Deadwood. I'm just mentioning a few people may not have heard about.
Maybe they don't fit in the category as described by WM, but I would give votes to both Magnificent Seven and Bone Tomahawk, as well. Great list, though! There are a few I haven't seen that I will definitely check out. Thanks!
I'm actually confounded. I expected either Unforgiven or No Country For Old Men to be #1. True Grit, while one of the best Westerns of the 21st century and one of the Coen's most exemplary works in their latter career, I don't feel you guys made much of a case as to why it is the most superior. Otherwise it's a solid list.
My Top 10 Modern Westerns are; 1. Unforgiven 2. True Grit (2010) 3. Dances With Wolves 4. Django Unchained 5. Tombstone 6. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 7. The Power of the Dog 8. The Hateful Eight 9. City Slickers 10. Open Range
Tombstone, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), and True Grit (2010) are my top 3 Westerns. Thanks for putting Back to the Future III on here. That was cool. No thanks for the political ideology. That wasn't cool. Dances with Wolves should have been on the list. It would have been a fine replacement for Django Unchained and is more deserving.
I watched a Cult Classic Western Comedy called Gunless. It's a story about a typical western protagonist wanted for a crime hiding out in a Canadian town. With great performances and a solid duck out of water style script, Gunless is a movie that I recommend.

A million ways to die in the west is hella underrated
Some are to old for this particular list though
The Quick and the Dead os so criminally underrated!!!
How are masterpieces like Dances With Wolves and Rango not on this list?! 😤
They’re not movies but Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 are proof that westerns are making a comeback in a small way, at the very least.

Tombstone. It has always been, and likely always will be, my favorite Western of all time. With a close second going to the original True Grit.
You left out Bone Tomahawk. It’s a great film. A western thriller with some serious horror elements. Also Kurt Russell is in it. It’s really great yo!

I want to recommend "Old Henry". Great movie with a cool twist at the end.
Indeed, another one they missed, great movie
The moment when Bill Money learns that they killed his friend and he downs half a bottle of whiskey is tranformative in the movies.
Old Henry should also be on this list. It’s criminally underrated. Tim Blake Nelson also stars, but it’s a lot more badass than Buster Skruggs.
A Million Ways to Die in The West... Seth MacFarlane put a pretty good spin on Modern Westerns.
