  • Complete ceiling repair and remodel step by step. Learn how to repair water damaged ceiling in your home. This video will demonstrate every step of the diy project. I will first remove the popcorn ceiling texture. Once all of the popcorn is off the ceilings then I will prep the ceiling holes for patching. If you have water damaged drywall you can cut the existing drywall and mount new drywall with these home improvement tips and tricks. After prepping the ceiling drywall, I will cut and replace the ceiling drywall. Once this large ceiling patch has been made, I will then use drywall joint compound to mud the joints made between the existing drywall and the new drywall. I will detail every step of the mudding process to get the drywall looking great. After mudding and sanding the drywall joint compound smooth I will begin the process of painting the ceiling white. I will start the painting by applying two coats of primer. After the primer is applied to the ceiling I will finish the repair by painting on two top coats of ceiling paint. Looks really great ... I also have a, (smaller), water damaged ceiling.
So, after watching your video, I think I will attempt at fixing it this week-end.

Hey, thanks, It was quite the project. I hope this video inspired you to tackle that project! I would recommend watching a few videos on how to skim coat the repair with drywall mud once you're to that step as I'm not a professional drywaller by any means!

You are a godsend for sharing this! Thank you so much! After Hurricane ian we have a huge patch from water damage on our ceiling with popcorn that needs to be removed altogether. Can't afford to have someone fix it, and I guess you'll never learn unless you try it yourself! Ill be watching this a handful of times before my attempt though haha
I noticed there's no insulation in your ceiling, is there anything specific I should make sure when replacing insulation?

You want to stop mold from water spots from spreading before it starts. You can use vinegar to stop it from spreading or use 1/2 cup bleach 1 cup warm water and a tsp of antibacterial dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray the discolored area and use a scrub brush then wipe off. It won't be 100 % clean but it kills mold. Then use a primer with a sealer. I found a spray can of it. I sprayed the areas I treated after drying. Do a 2nd coat. Then I bought a mold and mildew ceiling paint. Do 2 or 3 coats and it should be good. If the water damage made the drywall soft. Tear it out and any insulation and treat with the bleach mixture I mentioned above. Then it's just patch your drywall, plaster, prime and paint

@@kevinbrown1833bleach does not kill mold. bleach works mold further into cracks and crevices. not sure about vinegar though. i think there is a specific machine that kills mold

If the ceiling drywall was affected by water but has dried out and is now solid without any sagging, is it always necessary to cut the part away and install new drywall? Or can it be reused?

Check for mold, if there’s only slight mold on top you could bleach it. If you have a lot of mold then that’s the reason you’d want to replace it. Overall, you can reuse drywall that’s only been slightly exposed to water but when dealing with mold I’d replace it.

Hi thank you for the video. If you removed the popcorn ceiling texture from the entire ceiling first. Would you apply it again after finishing the repair and priming/painting?

You don’t have to paint as much or at all if you use popcorn texture. I painted because I didn’t want the popcorn ceiling anymore.
