    I learned yesterday that walkingstickbugs (not gonna look up everything again) have a few that mimic the stinging motion of a scorpion. I legit thought it'd sting me and used a claw tool to carefully put it on a tree out of the way of everyone

    Those are wings, they must have flight; I'd like to see how they manage in air: you'd never think something like that would fly but earwigs do and cockroaches, and they've never been considered fliers by many. It's an unpleasant fact that earwigs fly; their wings are triple-fold into a tiny wing-case: their pincer-butt curls up, facing-ahead underneath, open, like a soft-landing grapple.

    Treehoppers are such an epic source of bizarre animals to cover, not only do they come in lots and lots of funky shapes, but ALSO
    These guys ALSO make funky noises!
    They make vibrations in the leaves/stem they're perched on to communicate, and when converted into airborne sound they're all really funky and distinctive and I Would Pay Money For Someone To Make Music Out Of It

  • @Yezpahr

    They look like they evolved to give a mobile house to a web weaving spider. I wouldn't be surprised if some spiders actually had symbiotic relations with one of these weird species.

    • @Yezpahr
      @Yezpahr 3 роки тому

      @Ben B Artist A tasty target for a bird that can now eat the fat spider instead of eating the tree hopper. Of course, that does mean it's more of a parasitic symbiosis, the tree hopper being the parasite in this case :P.

    Ranks up there with the Tully monster! I wonder if their adult shape is completely different morphology than its earlier life stages - like frogs, butterflies and so on?

    • @Lykoloo
      @Lykoloo 3 роки тому +1

      They don't have larvae, they hatch from eggs with the same external body plan as an adult minus the wings and mating appendages. This is true of all planthoppers, treehoppers and their relatives.
