I grew up raising these! I always called them triops! I won a couple science fairs with them too!! Did an experiment where I fed different groups of triops different colors of food and it changed the population's colors! Green food to one group made them lighter and brown food to another group made for darker triops!

As a kid I was fascinated with fish keeping, however my mom would never ever allow me to have my own small aquarium. After begging and begging, she met me half way at "sea-monkeys" as she had them years ago and knew the process and knew how small they were. So i got these "Triops" instead and didn't tell her... You can have fun imagining my growing joy and her growing horror as my little buddies grew into these absolute monsters! They were really ugly, like something from Alien but i loved them and got a few generations out of them by studying their life cycle. Should have just let me get the cute goldfish lol

My 2 fancies started in a 15 gal for the first year before they got too big! They were very happy with weekly vegetables and all that other good stuff. Ok now i have the urge to keep Triops again haha would recommend! They can get huuuge but only live for just over a month or so. Funny little creatures though! And from above, very cute :P

I currently have 6 triops longicaudatus in my aquarium. They're lovely critters, and quite acrobatic too. They like zooming around (sometimes upside down) and let themselves sink too the bottom while snacking on a piece of carrot. They lay eggs a lot and grow really fast. Their larvae grow from 1mm to over 1.5 cm in just two weeks. So yeah, they make for a fun conversation piece whenever I have friends over.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we went into the desert near El Paso, Texas dove hunting. There had been heavy rains and the temporary ponds were teeming with these strange creatures. We collected some and took them to the university where a biologist identified them as "tadpole shrimp". Fascinating creatures, and I was intrigued that they had been in the area for millions of years from the time there was a prehistoric sea. Sadly, the area where I found them was developed and I never saw them in the wild again. Good to know they're not endangered.

I found them in temporary pools all over the Kaw River Valley decades ago. Some refereed to them as tadpole shrimp as they were about the color, size and shape of half grown bullfrog tadpoles. they spent much more time swimming upside down, eyes down, than eyes up, skimming the suface of the water for food. I reconded they avoided a lot of predation this way as the sediment of those temporary ponds had a lot of temporary predators. I haven't seen any for a long time.

I starred into that tank so long after the last one starved to death- the only thing going through my head is how this horrible end could have been prevented if somebody cared enough to listen and take action...
I had other pets after this that suffered similar fates. A bearded dragon who i couldnt get a new UVb bulb or heat lamp for and who i couldnt get any bugs for as treats. She only lived as long as she did because i could feed her salads and let her hang out in the sun outside sometimes.
After that i didnt want pets anymore... i hated watching them die from neglect while i was powerless to provide basic care.

They are both in the same Order (Notostraca) and are both in the same family (Triopsidae) 'three-eyes kin,' but are in different genus of (triops) 'three- eyes' and (Lepidurus) 'scale-ox' (I'm assuming ox meaning hardy?) So with both genus being in the family (Triopsidae,) triops is acceptable for both genus, in common name i call them shield shrimp.

I used to own a triop. His name was Tripe and I loved him so much. I cried so much when he sadly passed away when I got back home to find him no longer breathing even though he was fine in the morning and I gave him a good amount of food.

I got a triops kit once as a kid! Unfortunately only 2 of the eggs managed to hatch, and like you mentioned of the 2 hatchlings one ended up eating the other but that lone survivor was such a fun pet to have! I think he ended up living close to 60 days which seems to be average but it was so fun watching him doing flips and whatnot in the tiny little dish the kit came with (in hindsight, it was far too small for any amount of adult triops greater than 1 and lack of any possible form of filtration kinda made it useless long term. Kind of impressed in hindsight that such an inadequate habitat was included for them as a permanent residence in that kit! I'm sure my little guy had a happy lifetime despite all that, he certainly never seemed in any sort of distress!

So much better than sea monkeys, and the tank can simply be siphoned off to let the sand dry. Afterwards, just add water!

Who would have thought it, a translucent horseshoe crab with 3 eyes and a whippy tail. Sounds like a great B movie monster, but even though you didn't say so, they appear to be quite small. It seems to be looking up at you with a quizzical look as if to say, what the heck are you, no tail, no shell, please don't eat me.

People used to get called 'daft apus', when being silly, when I was a child. You only just made me remember the word for the fairy shrimp. I think the 'daft' version, is derived from 'halfpennyworth', now I think of it!
