Dell Inspiron 16 Plus Internals & Upgrading - Can it run 64GB RAM?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- One of the main reasons I wanted to get the Dell Inspiron 16 plus was the upgradability and I was really keen to see if it can take 64GB RAM even since the user manual says it wont. I know there are a lot of laptops that state they don't accept 64 but it still works. In this case it's not working as you can see in the video.

This is so useful information. No nonsense or clickbait. I appreciate this kind of content.
Thanks a lot! It seems like some people have got it working though which is good to know!
I had the same issue (black screen) on my Inspiron 7620 (upgrade from 16 to 32GB) but after a few hard switch off, the laptop went into the Bios, a knowledge the change of Ram and VOILA! Windows started!
Just had to be patient then.
Note: no need to close the cover to test if works! Saves time if need to swap a few times too!
Thanks for the explanation anyway, my main worry was opening and closing. And the credit card and not worrying when you hear plastic cracks did the trick!
Yep hard on off a few times then walked away doing the same upgrade came back and the bios was open warning that memory had changed and said the time of day wasn't set which was weird but ok. Working great now.
Which brand of RAM did you use?
Mine worked first time
Ok you convinced me to try again with my 64GB :) If it works I'll def post an update video :D
How many times have you turned your computer off and on? I'm already trying with the second RAM dedicated to Dell from Crucial and still a black screen. you mentioned not closing the hatch. So I understand that you changed the RAM sticks in places every time you turned it off or what?
Just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 7610 RTX 3060 from 16gb to 64gb. Only seems to work with Crucial ram memory cards. Went to their website and entered my computer model. It said that the Inspiron was compatible with 64gb so took a chance and ordered. The computer reboted directly!
Thanks for a great tutorial!
That's great! Thank you for posting this!!
for everyone who has problems with a black screen. I tried everything. replacing the RAM stick with a new one, hard shutting down the computer and nothing worked. the problem was an outdated BIOS. updating solved the problem
So you were able to run it with 64GB with the updated BIOS?
I still didn't get it to work, but still have the 64gb ram. Interesting thing.
There is some confusion being generated by this video. There are multiple models over the year and they support different configurations. The 7620 from 2022 or later will accept 64 gb.
When you first do the upgrade, the keyboard will light up and go back off. It will light up again and sit there for a good few minutes before getting to the boot screen where it will alert you of a hardware change.
This process takes minutes!
I realize this, and it's been mentioned in the comments. I have tried this with the ram in the video but I can't get it to work still.
The first generation Dell Inspiron 16 Plus (7610) also supports 64GB RAM.
I own one of these 7610 models and I have upgraded it to 64GB RAM.

Tack för att du kollade!
Thank you for the helpful tutorial! I installed extra RAM in my PC and this video was instrumental in helping, thanks again!
How much did you install?
I'm running my inspiron 16 plus with 64gb no problem. Wonder what's up with yours
Maybe a BIOS update would rectify his issue?
@@M1LAD81 maybe, my laptop has received several software updates and a bios update since I got it.
What RAM modules are you using?
When did you order the 16 plus? I heard the model from 2022 is able to support 64GB but the previous models do not. I brought my 16 plus in November 2011, and want to upgrade to 64GB

A very good ressource is the crucial website. I have upgraded my Dell (7610) Inspiron 16 Plus from 32GB to 64GB RAM with their recommended upgrade kit.
The Inspiron 16 Plus 7610 is AFAIK the first model year and the 7620 the newer second generation.
Always interesting and educative 👍, but Iam too scared to open up mine 😬
not that bad, its very easy. Just disconnect the power, get the right screw driver, undo the screws, make sure you are grounded to prevent static electricity and then open it up and the ram modules are right there, easy to swap.
Haha, I had an Inspiron 15 that was so much more complicated to open up and install new RAM. This looks like an absolute breeze by comparison--you can do it! :)
I just upgraded from 16GB to 40GB as I bought only one 32GB RAM module (32GB DDR5-4800 SODIMM 1.1V CL40
CT32G48C40S5). I own an Inspiron 7620, i7 12700H, GTX 3060 6GB. While upgrading I run into the same issue as yours. The computer was only powering but nothing happened. I never waited for more than 20 seconds and turned it off. I reverted to the original RAM it came with and again I run into the same issue. Laptop was powering up but the screen was staying black. I decided to wait and it booted after 1-2 minutes, first a few times it showed only the Dell logo and then it switched on. Tried it again with the new 32GB module and waited for 1-2 minutes until it booted properly.
Interesting! If you start it now, does it still have that long boot time or is it normal?
@@w2best it's normal boot time. That long 2 minutes boot was only after changing RAM modules
@@nicolaefratea makes me want to try this upgrade a third time 😆
@@w2best try it and come back with a reply.
Same thing here, I inserted the same 32gb module and waited around 3 minutes (would not have waited if I didn't see Nicolae's comment) and then see a warning page saying the memory size has changed, once I press continue it seem to be working as normal again, boot up time same as before swapping out the ram.
On the Inspiron 7610 (not 7620) the 64Gb RAM cards from Crucial work. I have just upgraded my computer RAM to 64Gb.
Can you please provide a link please? I currently got 16gb and was contemplating whether to get 32 or 64 and was worried if it would work or not.
That's very nice to hear! I'm also interested in exact model, to buy & try.
I try to upgrade from 16GB to 64GB, and here is what I found.
First time I put 2 32GB on the computer and I had an error. An amber light on the left side and no booting.
Second time I put 2 16GB on the computer and the computer took a little time to boot, but it booted.
Third time I try again the 2 32GB and make sure that the RAM aligned correctly, I noticed the one of the modules was loose.
After adjusting it finally worked, the computer worked. I put the computer inside my backpack, next day when I try to boot, amber light again...
This happened several times, I decided to go back to the 32GB of RAM, I don't why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but at the end of the day I need consistency, when I need the computer to start without any problems.
I'm gonna try my 64 again to see if I can have it work!!
I usually go to the crucial web, they have a scan that determines the max RAM that would work on the laptop.
Ah intersting! I just tried many times above spec and had it working fine so I hoped it would be the case here...
@@w2best Have you done he 64GB wih Cucial memory yet to see if it works

I put 64GB in my 7610 and it worked. It took a min for it to boot but its working fine. Maybe the RAM you had was bad.
Ok that's great news! It might be that it's bad. Vet good to see you got it working!
Suggest you post the exact make and model of the ram you used. thanks.

After you put them in, boot it and leave it alone. It will give a blank screen for a moment but it should boot to the OS
my inspiron 15-3585 can handle 64gb ram no probs. r3 2200u is rly underpowered tho. put 2tb ssd in too. I use gentoo and arch linux, and when compiling big packages like firefox, 64gb really helps.
Great video content, but the focus shift was crazy, couldn't make out most of the time. 😒
Ah, that's the F1,4 doing it's thing. Thanks for the feedback i will look at that more!
Hey, how long did you allow the black screen to display, before deciding that 64GB was not accepted?
I have a Dell Inspiron 5593. The Dell manual for it says max ram is 16 Gb (2 x 8 GB). But I took out an 8GB and put in a 16 GB (so a total of 24 GB), and when I rebooted, there was a black screen for a few minutes, but eventually the computer booted without issue, and I've been using it for a few weeks without issue. After it booted for the first time with the new amount of ram, the bios shows the correct amount of RAM. I think the black screen is that the BIOS has detected a new RAM configuration, and is doing some sort of quick memory test before updating the BIOS with the new RAM configuration details. I also have another Dell laptop where I installed more RAM than the max amount stated in the manual.
I believe that Dell purposely don't show the correct maximum allowable RAM in their manuals in order to prevent people from installing more RAM, which will mean people won't be buying their much more expensive Precision machines which come with 32GB and 64GB ram options. What you can do is look up your CPU info on the Intel website to see how much maximum RAM the CPU can handle, and that should be what the machine is capable of running, since the motherboard is made to conform to the operating parameters of the CPU.
Other people said this too, which prompts me to try again. I definitely didn't leave it for a few minutes. Never knew that was a thing.
When i built my desktop computer with 128GB ram, the first boot had also black screen for 30-60 sec or so. It was recommended to disable fast boot before you make bigger hardware changes.
But it does the same with an 32gb update even though I triple checked the Ram I bought, so it th e 64RAM might not be the problem, but the fact that dell laptops just won´t work with every RAM brand. It´s apparently a pretty common problem updating it.
It does definitely work with two 16 GB RAM modules.
I have bought my 7610 with 32 GB RAM. It works flawlessly.
So many people have it working. But it's so frustrating when it doesn't.
Do you recommend this laptop? Is it comfortable to use for programming & watching videos? Does it really have overheating problems?
Can a dell latitude 5500 i7 8665u be upgraded to 64gb ram
Not good that it concludes that it can't be done, when crucial have verified it can, along with people in the comments. If people didn't read the comments they'd just not upgrade to the 64 they wanted, when really it would work. I'd say it's be good to either rename this to a how to open the laptop video, noting 64 does work, or remove the video altogether, or replace it with one showing it does work. Currently seems like misinformation. I mean it did not work for you clearly, but it does work. Question or thought I had was did you update the bios to the latest prior? Maybe the diff between working and not working for people are different bios versions? Just a thought.
I can agree with this. It's not meant as misinformation though. It's meant as a test that clearly didn't work out. I've been on the newest upgrades both on windows and bios.
mine actually did. Booted with 64gb ram. Inspiron 7610
That's super cool!
@@w2best you need a specific model though
Hey. I would like some advice. Mine has 512go m.2 2230 on the PCIe 4.0 slot (I assume it is a PCIe 4 drive). I would like to replace the 2230 by a 2280 and put the 2230 in the PCIe 3.0 slot (only supports 2230). How could I clone my 2230 without a problem? Will the system runs of I put the 2230 in the secondary slot? This way I could install a 2280 in the main slot and perform the cloning process. Thank you.
Are both SSDs slots PCIE 4.0?
hi mate I have a Lenovo Yoga slim 7 pro X 14.5 and I have had really bad experience with it. It crashed a couple time at the beginning then I reset it then that time wifi did not work and I reset it again and now every time I try to add any smartArt in the Word document it strangely resists and freezes now I am done and returning it. BTW keyboard is just ridiculously bad. Anyway I am between Hp Envy 13 and Dell inspiron 16 or 14 plus I would like to hear your suggestion. Thank you!
I never comment, BUT: this video is entirely incorrect! You can upgrade the ram to 64GB, you just need to reboot a few times and enter the bios and acknowledge and then it works, as @DigitalFrancois says. It can work fine, which negates this entire video. (Comment posted using an Inspiron running 64GB ram.)
I actually tried that but it didn't work, so I think maybe my ram was faulty. However some people, like you, have success which is why i keep the video live. The comments provide more value then the video probably :)
You never mention trying to run the machine with only one of the 32GB SODIMMS installed. Failing that, you haven't eliminated the possibility that you simply had (at least one) faulty stick.
Should do another trial of that for sure. I don't own any 16gb sticks currently so it will be hard to try that though.
@@w2best
I'm wasn't suggesting that you try two 16GB sticks; I'm pointing out that one of your 32GB sticks might have been bad, and that this would explain why the machine didn't boot.
The way to test for a bad module in a matching pair is to try booting with only one of the two installed, and trying again with only the other. That way you'd identify a bad module.
@@w2best You can just put one 32gb card in there. You won't get dual channel though :(
@@BillWoodJr I'm gonna do that right away when I'm back in the office. Such a noob mistake my me to not try it!!
Tried it now and it's not working. According to the spec max 16gb is supported so maybe the spec is actually right. www.dell.com/support/manuals/sv-se/inspiron-16-7610-laptop/inspiron-7610-setup-and-specifications/memory?guid=guid-e9d2ea83-38a4-431d-803c-96d63c1dbc34&lang=en-us
thanks for the walk through video. the 7620's i7-1260p SoC says it can handle ddr5 4800Mhz memory but the dell support folks say device only tested for ddr4 3200Mhz like it shipped with. Do we know that the system can handle ddr5 4800Mhz memory upgrade? also looking to move from intel ax211 m.2 with wifi6e + bt5.3 m.2 to newer be200ngw m.2 with wifi7 + bt5.4, anyone confirmed that works?

what screwdriver did you use to open the back, nothing i have in my house works lmao
Just a regular Phillips, but in small size. You can get a kit with tiny ones and i guarantee it's there.
Hi, in my DELL i tried to change the ram from 2x8 to 2x16. I bought ram with the same parameters and Dell does not read them. Do you know what the problem is? The battery control LED flashes 5 times with white light and twice with orange light, which indicates that a non-original DELL product has been installed
This is exactly the issue I had as well. It sucks, but I don't know how to fix it. Try swapping the modules. Try waiting for a really long time for them to boot. Hope you can get it to work!
@@w2best thanks for help a lot
Did you try 32gb of memory? Either with 1 32gb card or 2 16gb cards?
I'm gonna try right away when I'm back in the office. Huge mistake by me but didn't even think about it when I filmed!
Tried 1 32 GB and it's not working and according to spec it shouldn't work... I'll try and get my hands on 2*16 instead! www.dell.com/support/manuals/sv-se/inspiron-16-7610-laptop/inspiron-7610-setup-and-specifications/memory?guid=guid-e9d2ea83-38a4-431d-803c-96d63c1dbc34&lang=en-us

Oh yes! That is no prob at all.
Are you able to upgrade the GPU? or is it too invasive to the computer
