Omggg I just finished The Final Empire! I just started the second book and I'm slowly starting it... not super motivated to continue and my gripes with the book (especially the ending) is one of the reasons why I want to get back into Malazan asap, because the first book of Malazan was just so much better than The Final Empire. While there are elements of it that I liked, I do think that a lot of things fall flat and are too simple and I didn't realize it but you're right that there is only one main girl character... I can't believe that you didn't get past the first ballroom scene ahaha there are many more ballroom scenes... and yeah you probably won't like the rest... you're making me question if I should continue with the series or not haha. Malazan is definitely much more worth my time.

Honestly, as a slow reader, it's really refreshing to find someone who has read an obtainable amount of books. The volume that some booktubers go through makes me feel exhausted. I really need to read Ursula Le Guin, people have been recommending her to me for years!

Yeah I hear you, I have other hobbies I love like drawing and painting and playing video games I'm not reading all the time lmao and I like to take a little break between each book to absorb what I read!
Highly recommend Ursula Le Guin, her prose is unmatched for me!

Keep in mind lots of those people listen to audio…and listen on 2x-3x speed just to get through their 150,250+ books. It’s all about the numbers for a lot of them.

This is a really interesting and diverse collection of sci-fi and fantasy!
I’d be really interested in reading The Ballad of Black Tom. I’ve been reading Lovecraft stories throughout December and was hoping to review some of them during the month. Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to it (but maybe in the new year!) The Horror at Red Hook is one of his scariest stories, but sadly it’s also the one where his racism/xenophobia is very much ingrained in the DNA of the text. Because of that, I think it would be really fascinating, both as an experiment and as a corrective, to read the same story told from another perspective.
2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favourite sci-fi films also, but I’ve never read the book or any of Clarke’s writing. I’m hoping to pick up my sci-fi reading in 2025, so I might look into getting some of his books from the library. ☺

I highly recommend the ballad of black tom if you've read the original, I think seeing that story through the lens of a black author and featuring a black man as the main character is very interesting and really gave the story a whole new depth, it was really good! I love cosmic horror stories that completely subvert the original ideas Lovecraft had while still keeping what makes the themes of cosmic horror so interesting
