With a very humble origin, the Schipperke began as the pet of merchants and middle class families who wanted a small guard dog and a rodent hunter. In the XIX century, the breed was so popular in central Belgium that it was recognized as a national dog, but it was not until 1885 that it get real interest in all social classes, after being adopted by Queen María Enriqueta. Shortly after, the first Schipperke arrives in America, winning a large number of loyal fans.

Even if they’re a very small breed, the Schipperke is a very agile, strong and active guardian dog that can reach up to 13 inches and weigh 12 to 16 pounds. With a unique appearance, this dog is robust and muscular with a black fur, dense and very thick. The nose is black, the eyes are dark brown, small, and almond shaped, standing out for its mischievous, intense and penetrating expression.
Grooming: Despite its bright and shiny black fur, the Schipperke is a type of dog that doesn’t need a very special care; In general, a regular brushing once or twice a week is just enough, It’s also necessary to pay frequent attention to his eyes, teeth, ears, feet and nails.
Temperament: Even if they have an independent and very stubborn personality, the Schipperke is, without a doubt, a brave and loyal friend. Full of energy, this dog is usually very active, affectionate, curious and playful. His hunter soul will always keep him alert and his high sense of protection makes him the best guardian for his human family.
Training: Due to their energy, this type of breeds needs varied and constant activities and teaching exercises. The training should be fair but very firm, always trying to maintain the dog's attention. The Schipperke likes challenges, and their owners must have, at least, a level of energy and imagination similar to theirs dogs.
Health: Diseases such as hip and knee dysplasia, distiquiasis, cataracts, progressive atrophy of the retina, entropion, epilepsy, Legg-Calvé-Perhes disease, are not frequent, but some Schipperke dogs had suffered some of them.
Independent but charming, the Schipperke has a unique personality, full of energy, vitality and, above all, a lot of love for its owners, which is why they have become increasingly popular in many countries around the world.

I just had to put my Schipperke, Jingles to sleep over 6 weeks ago. He was the most unique, and extraordinary personality, I have ever encountered, of any species. He had such a unique presence, like nothing I have ever experienced. When I brought him to the vet, to have him put to sleep, the staff there just fell in love with him. They loved him so much, they did not charge me for the services to put him to rest. He was 4 days shy of 16 years old. I would give birth to that dog to bring him back in to my life. Love you Jingles, Daddy miss you.
you have my very best condolences seriously
@@youtuber3328 Thank you very much! I miss that boy!
you're welcome
I've had two schipperkies, they've both been lazy and worthless. I love them, best dog breed!
Papillon Effect lazy? Mine is the utter opposite
@@Lee_Forre Mine was too lol
those wernt schipperkees !
They’re know they’re just a dumb dog so they should sit still in a moving vehicle; they have more sense than some people I know, which makes them lazy and worthless and the best dogs ever.
I just loss my schipperke Mitzie, she was 16 years old my best friend, I missed her soooo much, I don't know if I ever get over her , just 3 weeks till today. Love her soooo much.
I have a schipperke mix. He's the best dog I've ever had. Absolutely too smart for his own good. He has me trained, but he's the sweetest, most loyal guy ever.....and those powerful schipperke shoulders are so cute!!!
i just found out my dog is a Schipperke, the person we bought it from sold him as a Pomeranian and when he was a puppy looked exactly like a pom. But he's completely different from our other pom in the he has a long nose and very different hair. Also, he is very energetic and loud compared to our pom.
I have one now she is the sweetest with the best disposition have ever seen
same but he’s a baby 🥺✋🏼
Just lost furry baby this morning. was a very loyal and amazing dog to have. I had her since I was 10 years old she 14 years old. Miss you her so much 🐶💔💔😢
A UA-cam short brought me here and now I want one lol! :)
i did do and will really love schipperkees
Mispronouncing the word "Schipperke." It's a Flemish word and in Flemish, as well as in Dutch, the "sch" is not soft, but hard, and sounds like "sk," so it's "skipperke," I'm a member of the Schipperke Club of America.
Wrong, its pronounced soft sch coming from the word schip which means ship in dutch and furthermore schipperke means little shipper(small sailor) in slang. I'm a member of the Dutch Language History Institute.
I went to the Rose City dog show looking for Schipperke to buy or to find breeders. I would go up to someoe and ask where were the Schipperkes( soft sch) and they would reply- oh! You mean the Schipperkes (with a sharp ‘k’…. I caught on to the joke by the third person. I’ve had 2 schips totally different from each other one the perfect ranch dog went everywhere with the heeler, Aussie, and had. The next one had to be confined to our fenced yard and on the leash outside.
I tried to find another schipperkes/ but the price!!!! Currently have a standard poodle. ( great dog)
0:17 it says that they’re tailless but in a lot of the photos they have curled tails??
some Schipperke breeds especially in the US don't have that tail anymore. It's a shame because the long bushy foxlike tail of the original Schipperke is just too adorable and beautiful
BernieBear but they can have the curled tail? I like them better with curly tails 😳 that’s why I have my Shiba babies 😋 I absolutely love spitz breeds 😍
@@jacintylou ya especially in europe most Schipperke breeders have Schipperke with their awesome tail. Also Schipperke aren't entirely Spitz breeds, they also have a large amount of shepherd dog in them. The FCI even classify them as shepherds.
And yes, Shibas are super adorable too.
BernieBear cool! Nice to know! I kinda just classify any dog with pricked ears and a curly tail as a spitz breed but I can totally see shepherd, you learn something everyday!
At 2:19 there is a picture of a Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael)...
Loud enough music?
I have a schipperke who’s mixed with a chihuahua and he’s the best little dog, he looks liked a potato with long legs
1860
I miss my Schipperke :,(
Can’t tell if someone’s dog is Skippy or a Pom or mixed. They are doing DNA. Rescue
Ok this what I think my chihuahua is mixed with he looks just like this but is smaller and brown and black
I change my answer I think b in Bruselas
B. 1690
our Schipperke puppy appears very hyperactive, bites alot and won't do his business outside, alot of work.
Good for first time dog owners?
Not really
My friend Javier thinks Schipperke is “a wacky strain of V.D.”
What do you call a small schipperke
A Shrimperke.
A shrinkerke
a small perky
C
Origin ??
I think c in Germany
A
...pronounced SKIP-er--key...
...Jesus, do a little research & production prep ..
@So Yoshimura
...if you scroll down a little, you'll see Miss Coronetz ALSO called you on your pronunciation (including Dutch/German), I would offer her credentials more substantial then yours'...thus my critique of your sub-par research & production IS warranted...suck it up buttercup...
I agree with you SKIP-er-key!
Yes finally someone who agrees with me on that. I prefer to say skipper-key instead of shipperke it does make sense because they are Belgian barge dogs after all. One day I will have a Samoyed, a Keeshond, and this little skipper dog.
as a belgian dude i can say its NOT written down as bruselas xD xD xD its brussels xD americans ... xD
Ghhh
Very weird and wrong pronunciation of the breed!
Great dogs even if they can be complete dicks sometimes...we own two Whenever I see one they kinda remind me of little black bears.
